People and Places of Renown

Home of Colette and Pierre Larousse, La Puisaye-Forterre features numerous sites and buildings related to its eventful past. The cultural heritage is preserved and varied and has many surprises in store for history, art, culture and nature lovers. Take the time to explore the many facets of Puisaye-Forterre.

Colette (1873-1954)

Saint-Sauveur-en-Puisaye, the birthplace of Colette, hosts a museum fully dedicated to the writer’s life and work. Visitors are invited into Colette’s poetic and sensual world. Not far from the museum, the house where she was born is being renovated but is not open for visits yet.

A Wealth of Potters

La Puisaye has a longstanding tradition in pottery. Saint-Amand-en-Puisaye is the cradle of this craft and is known as the “pottery villlage” and has been awarded the official “Ville et Métiers d’Art” label (City and Fine Crafts). Other villages such as Treigny, Lain or Moutiers are also home to artist workshops, exhibitions, training courses. The Puisaye Art and History Museum also has a section dedicated to ceramics.

Ochre and Wall Paintings

Due to the abundance of ochre locally, outstanding wall paintings are a feature of many of the churches. These wall paintings, dating from the twelfth to the nineteenth century, are a valuable witness to the lifestyles and beliefs of these periods. Thirteen villages have set up a network to highlight this cultural heritage.

The Aubigny Underground Quarry

This exceptional, beautifully lit up site is an “upside down cathedral”, the result of thousands of years of stone-quarrying. The Opera House and Town Hall in Paris, for instance, have been built with this particular quarried stone. Discover the craft of quarrying, a true witness to our past but also a tribute to more recent craftsmanship such as the guild of stone cutters (Compagnons) and stone carver’s work on heritage sites.

Deep in secluded woodland, an abandoned quarry reveals a landscape seemingly untouched since the dawn of the last millennium. Out of this wood and stone, using thirteenth century building techniques, a castle is being created. An amazing enterprise that will take a quarter of a century to complete.

The Ratilly Castle

The Ratilly castle, built in the thirteenth century, was remodelled and enhanced during the Renaissance, in particular with the addition of a beautiful pigeon loft. This charming fortress surrounded by moats has accommodated a pottery workshop since 1951 and regularly hosts high quality cultural events.

The Druyes Castle

This “Philippian” type castle from the twelfth century was the residence of the counts of Auxerre and Nevers. It is erected on a hill overlooking the picturesque village of Druyes-les-Belles-Fontaines: Romanesque church, crystal clear springs and a superb wash house. The medieval houses are preserved in the upper town. Summer is particularly active with theatre, concerts, exhibitions, artist workshops.

The Saint Fargeau Castle

An imposing red brick castle from the fifteenth century which opens up into an elegant courtyard redesigned by Le Vau in the seventeenth century. The amazing tour of the castle’s roof structure follows the visit of the furnished apartments. A “Sound and Light” pageant completes the sightseeing tour.

Art and Culture

A large number of artists have settled in La Puisaye-Forterre. Many art and exhibition centres are open all year round: Regional Contemporary Art Centre, the Métairie Bruyère’s Graphic Arts Centre, Acanthe Sphere, Artists in Puisaye,…

Omnipresent Nature

Unspoilt and flourishing nature is part of the charm of our countryside: Arch-shaped vegetation canopies, natural ponds, well-maintained trails, panoramic views. You can also watch animals in the wild at the wildlife park in Boutissaint.
