Overview

About the property

The cottage sits 150 feet above Lake Michigan with views of the Manitou and Fox Islands. 700 feet of frontage and very few neighbors afford an unusual degree of privacy and solitude. A winding path down to the lake leads to miles of shoreline perfect for petoskey stone and agate hunting, swimming, kayaking, and relaxation.

The cottage has a wide covered deck that is the perfect spot to lounge: read, eat, watch a breathtaking sunset or storm clouds fly in from the west, star gaze or dream. There is an eagle's nest nearby and regular flybys. Track and identify freighters sailing through the Manitou Passage by phone app!

There is a second patio under the porch with comfy lounge chairs for a quiet respite.

You are close to everything that is Leelanau County: wineries, restaurants, beaches, the Sleeping Bear Dunes, golf, hiking, and the best road biking in the midwest..... but you may never want to leave this spot. It is perfect for those who want to get away from it all.

From June 1 to Sept 1, the rental is for a week from Sunday to Sunday. For the rest of the time, there is a 3 day minimum. The rates vary depending on the season. In the off season, there is a base price, assuming two people. There is an additional fee per person after that. There is also a fee if you have a dog.

There is no wifi or cable. No TV. No AC. Cell service can be spotty. There are fans in each bedroom . Absolutely no fireworks .There are puzzles, games, and books available.

The path is 15 stories up and down, winding and narrow in places. It takes about 5 minutes to go down and 8 minutes to go up. You need to be in reasonable shape to navigate.

About Kate

I am my father's daughter. I am so lucky to have learned so many skills from my dad and mom. My dad was a Jack of all trades, and I hope I am Jill of all trades. My mom was a friend to all. I would like to be more like her.

Kate purchased this cottage in 1960

Why Kate chose Northport

This cottage was built by our family starting in 1960. The beams were built in our back yard using timbers from Saint Francis Church in Traverse City. My father bought remnants from the demolition of the church and much of the frame is from those remnants. My dad was a frugal man and reused everything. There is a kitchen counter top he made from left-over wood scraps from an archery manufacturer. Old cabinet doors are inlaid in the floor, as are many game boards he hand assembled. He used old colanders for ceiling lights and left-over water heaters for the duct work. He made the wall paneling from trees he milled himself! He also used under-aged laborers to build this house. We children never thought to thank him as we pulled and straightened nails and screwed the nuts to make the beams, but we thank him now. Thank you Pa.

Dream Vacation!

  • 5 of 5

This is one of the most special places on Earth! You travel down a well-cleared path through the woods to arrive at a hidden cottage. It looks so quaint and cute from the back and then you walk in to a wall of windows overlooking Lake Michigan. We're talking 180 degree views of the water, trees, and the Manitou Islands.

The cottage itself has clearly been loved. There is custom woodworking in the floors and counter tops, comfy little nooks to read or stare at the lake, and wonderfully peaceful bedrooms on the lower level. This is the best place to rejuvenate.

The path down to the lake is well-marked and lovely in its own right. Then you spill out onto a deserted beach and some of the best swimming!

If that weren't enough, Kate was super responsive and helpful. I couldn't have wanted anything else. This is a true vacation where you can take a break from the rest of the world.

Owner's Response: Thank you. This is exactly how I feel there. I turn the corner into the woods and it becomes a world away.

Tranquility At Its Best!

  • 5 of 5

This was a beautiful, inviting, and clean cottage with all the necessities to make for a relaxing and peaceful vacation. The view of Lake Michigan was breathtaking and the remote feeling of the cottage made us feel like we were all alone; yet it was only 3 miles to town. We were able to get cell service most of the time (AT&T) in the cottage. Our 2 dogs had a great time going down the path to the beach and exploring. The cottage itself has a lot of character and it is easy to see that it was built with love. Kate was kind and super easy to work with. Highly recommend this cottage for anyone wanting to get away from it all!

Amazing!

  • 5 of 5

What a special gem! The location is beautiful, we loved driving through the cherry orchard to get to the house and the view once we were there was exactly what you'd hope for. We also loved watching all the weather variations from one moment to the next play out over the lake, especially the lightning storm at night - it was breathtaking! The house is amazing and had everything we needed for a great stay. The cement floors in the basement were especially nice on a hot day and kept us perfectly cool at night. Kate was also a lovely host, meeting us there to show us around and answer our questions. This was the perfect way to disconnect from city life and be immersed in nature.
