About James Head

We live in Warwickshire, England and were introduced to Montenegro in 2009 by a friend who has a nearby front line property in Stoliv, Montenegro. The picture is of me (James) and my daughter Rose in September 2012 when we were searching for a property to buy. Our search for a property in Montenegro was documented by House Hunters International. The show was first shown on HGTV in the US on 4th March 2013. This was the first ever HHI show filmed in Montenegro.

James Head purchased this apartment in 2012

Why James Head chose Montenegro

Montenegro uses the Euro (€), but is not in the Euro zone. The cost of food, eating out, alcohol, taxis and transport is very reasonable and is much better value than in the UK or the traditional holiday countries of the Eurozone such as Italy, France, Croatia & Spain. Montenegrin's are keen to speak English and it is taught in all schools..

What makes this apartment unique

New for 2016 - We have arranged the most amazing opportunity for our guests. Our neighbours cook the most delicious local food. We have eaten there many times. Now, our guests will be able to enjoy, authentic, local cuisine, served fresh at your own table cooked by our neighbours. All you will have to do is provide the plates and cutlery. When you make a booking with us you will get all the information you need.

Of the 30 properties we saw, The Stone House - 165 Prcanj was unique. The property is of traditional stone construction with high ceilings and front line to the sea. The internal decoration, layout of the rooms and the quality furniture were all part of the deal and enabled us to have a property we could use immediately. To lie in bed and be able to see the sea and the mountains is an experience not to forget. There is also a terrace with amazing views of the sea and the mountains with bespoke couches to laze upon. The two 'must do' visits are the marina development of Porto Montenegro in Tivat and the UNESCO walled city of Kotor. Both within 15 minutes of your apartment.

Guestbook comments from the owner

We were blessed with warm sunny weather and blue skies for our stay in The Stone House. The house is very comfortable and comes with the most stunning views od the crystal clear water and mountain scenery. It was still warm enough to lounge about on the sunny terrace and even a quick dip in the shallow safe water across the way from the property. The whole area is unspoilt and we felt very welcome by the neighbours down stairs who actually look after the property and so were very happy to see us. The house has all the comforts from home, and has many 'nice touches' and is tastefully decorated, our bed was very comfy. When we could drag ourselves away from the house, we had a couple of lovely drives out, including a very worthwhile drive up into the mountains for more views and a very pleasant stroll around Porto Montenegro. We can't wait to return and have a trip out on the water.

Management Response

I am glad Angela & her family had time to visit Porto Montenegro and found everything they needed at The Stone House. From July 2nd to 5th 2015, Boat International are hosting their summer rendez vous event there. The worlds most amazing superyachts will be out on the bay and docked in Porto Montenegro for everyone to see. This annual event has just moved from Monaco to Porto Montenegro.

Wonderful Montengro

  • 5 of 5

The country and it's people are fantastic.

The "Stone Cottage" was the ideal base to search out all those spots that make a holiday special. Everything from the super comfortable bed to the amazing prepared food was excellent. The simple pleasure of walking 10 metres to the Punta for a swim made our time there an unforgettable experience. I will return.

Amazing Views! Great Location!

  • 5 of 5

We throughly enjoyed our week stay at The Stone House in a beautiful village of Prcanj, which has shops, bars and restaurants, all within walking distance. The apartment is fabulous with well equipped kitchen and tastefully decorated with wooden beams and exposed stones in some areas.

The terrace, which gets sun all day is lovely place to relax and read.

The views are amazing from the windows, and the sea is just outside the front door. Crystal clear water and it was lovely to go in the sea after a day of sightseeing.

The neighbours, Jadranka and Voja were so welcoming. They helped us each time we required taxis or anything else. We also asked Jadranka to prepare our meal one evening and it was fabulous. If you are staying for few nights, then we suggest you should sample her cooking.

Montenegrin are lovely and friendly people and we would love to return and stay at The Stone House.

What a place - more than photos can show

  • 5 of 5

The apartment lives up to all of the positive reviews from others. It is a great location with a warm, inviting living/dining room, the master bedroom has a very comfortable bed, and the views are almost ridiculously gorgeous from every window. The weather was wet and cold so we did not get to enjoy the covered patio as much as we had hoped, but we sat out there a few times when the sun peaked through.

Having Bojan pick up up at the Tivat airport was a real treat after more than 30 hours of traveling to get there. We really enjoyed hiring Gracija's boat for a afternoon trip to Our Lady of the Rocks ( be sure to get the guide inside the church to give you the history before you go the the museum) and Perast.

We used the great service of dinner cooked by Jadranka when our friends from Podgorica visited for the day - lots of good food and a few extras from her...just wish we could have communicated with more than sign language.

Owner's Response: I am really glad that the boat trip with Gracija and getting Jadranka to cook dinner for your visitors worked out so well. These are brand new services we have organised for our guests. Google translate works well. Translate English to Serbian. Back in the day, Montenegrin kids were taught Russian in school. For the last 30 years or so kids have been taught English.

Wonderful stay

  • 5 of 5

We were met by an assistant at the stone house who was very curteous and did a very thorough job of showing us around. There are two flights of stairs from the main gate up to the apartment. The views onto the bay are lovely and our children enjoyed collecting shells and sea glass on the pebble beach. Just be aware that the gate opens immediately onto the road so caution is necessary. The kitchen was very well equipped and had everything we needed to make a full Easter dinner. The master bed was the most comfortable we've slept on in our travels and we've slept on a lot of beds! Anka, the local contact, was very responsive to our needs and questions. The drive into Kotor is picturesque immediately beside the bay along a windy narrow road - take it slowly! On our last evening we ordered 3 servings of meat and vegetables plus two salads from Jadranka downstairs. Though she doesn't speak English she was lovely with the children and greeted us warmly whenever we saw her. We enjoyed the meal very much - there were various types of sausage and pork plus fried zucchini and eggplant, and fried potatoes. There was much more than enough for our family of 6 and we had leftovers for the next day. She even included some complimentary corn biscuits and a bottle of good wine. It was a treat to be able to "eat out" without leaving the apartment. Thank you Jadranka!

Owner's Response: It is great to know that Anka and her management team did a great job of showing you around and making you feel at home. It is even more exciting to know that asking our neighbour Jadranka to cook you dinner at home was such a success. This is a brand new initiative and you were our first guests to take advantage of this new service.

Amazing views & great accommodation

  • 5 of 5

We recently stayed at The Stone House in Prcanj and found the house and location amazing. The views were out of this world and every time you found yourself looking out of the windows or at the view from the terrace you said 'wow'. The house was lovely and the neighbours helpful & friendly. All the information given to us by James was great and very helpful and we had no problems with the trip across the border from Croatia. Bojan and his son Philip (contacts given to us by James) who arranged to collect us from the airport and returned us there were really helpful and friendly too.

Kotor old town was approx a 7-10 minute drive from the house and the buses would come past every hour (around half past the hour) and were easy to flag down. We had several dips in the sea just a few feet from the house and enjoyed watching the cruise ships come and go. There were 2 or 3 shops and a bakery within walking distance along with several restaurants on the water front so we didn't feel the need to go into Kotor itself every evening. We particularly enjoyed going to Konaba Lanterna which was a bit further to walk but served good food.

The locals were friendly and helpful, especially if you tried to learn a few words of Montenegrin!

This was our first trip to Montenegro but we would love to return and would definitely stay at The Stone House again.

Owner's Response: Great to hear that The Stone House has the Wow factor! It is also worth reminding ourselves too that the sea is lovely to swim in during October.

Fantastic property, superb location

  • 5 of 5

We enjoyed a fabulous week in Prcanj, and wanted to share our experiences so others could enjoy this wonderful location to the full. The Stone House is well situated in a quiet part of the Kotor bay with the most stunning view of the sea and the mountains. Every day it was magical waking up and looking upon this vista from such a great vantage point. The entire front of the apartment has this superb view, as well as the rear terrace which is a great place to sit and drink beer, read your book, or watch the interesting sailing boats and ships that pass by. The property is rich in character, and is beautifully appointed with high quality furniture and fittings. This is a very comfortable place to spend your holiday, and my wife and I wanted to stay longer !

Within close walking distance is a fantastic shop/mini market which has everything you could need, including the great local Nicksicko beer at around 50p a bottle, and Vranac wine at around £ 2.00. There are also many Konoba restaurants nearby which serve fantastic food (especially the seafood) at extremely reasonable prices. In fact even though the apartment had a superbly equipped kitchen, we seldom used it due to the low cost of eating out, and ease of access to eateries.

Getting around was easy, and we were happy to use the local blue line buses and red taxis which were extremely good value. The bus is one Euro and takes you all around the bay. The bus will stop wherever it is flagged down, and drop you off wherever you ask the driver to stop (That’s what I call a bus service !). Taxis were around 6 Euros from Prcanj into Kotor which is very reasonable in my book.

The neighbours below were so kind to us, helping us out with directions to the places we wanted to visit, and inviting us to taste their locally brewed domestic liquor “Rakia”. In fact all the Montenegrin people we met during our trip were very warm and friendly. This sums it up for me, and I can’t wait to go back to Montenegro again, as I am sure there is so much more to discover. The Stone House was a fantastic place to stay in a fantastic location, and made this one of the best holiday experiences ever.

Top Tip **Be sure to read the house book which has many useful tips on places to visit and things to do during your stay**

Montenegro is a beautiful coastal republic which faces Italy over the Adriatic Sea.

With its stunning scenery, warm Mediterranean climate and hospitable people it’s no wonder that the World Travel and Tourism Council (WTTC) has identified it as the fastest growing holiday destination in the world. Montenegro is doing no more than recapturing the glory of its 1970’s and 80’s heyday when film stars made a beeline for its unspoiled medieval-era coastal towns and inviting beaches and coves.

One of the most attractive locations in Montenegro is the Bay of Kotor (Boka Kotorska). Wooded hills slope down to the sparkling water whilst medieval towns and villages built from local stone nestle at the water’s edge. The area is UNESCO registered, protecting against over-development.

With EU accession likely to be only a few years away and a Government determined to avoid the fate of the overdeveloped Spanish Costa's Montenegro really is a wonderful holiday destination worth exploring. Home of two UNESCO World Heritage Sites – the ancient walled city of Kotor and Durmitor National Park – Montenegro is cherished by lovers of history and nature alike. English is widely spoken. It is now taught in schools and then perfected from 'Pop songs & TV shows’. May to September the average daily temp is 28 degrees Celsius with an average of 9 hrs. of sunshine per day.
