Hi I'm Jan, I love living here and I particularly enjoy sharing my local knowledge and experiences with my guests - especially the local Fiestas and live music that makes summer here so special. My dream of working for myself and setting up a holiday business has become a reality with two ground floor apartments and lovely swimming pool. I have my own olive grove and my oil is available for sale. I live upstairs with two friendly dogs -Champ a golden Labrador who just loves people and Luna a sweet natured Labrador/Collie cross, who came to live with me after being rescued from a horrible owner. I also have three well behaved cats - Cleo my black cat is very shy, Lea my tabby is very sweet and then there is Nino a very cute striped tabby kitten who arrived as an early Christmas present! Completing the gang are four chickens, so there there are often fresh eggs for sale too.
Janice Julian purchased this apartment in 2000
I first came to Umbria in 1998 on my honeymoon and fell completely under the spell of this area. There was a great sense of 'coming home ' each time we visited and leaving after each visit became increasingly difficult. On one of our t trips I said 'you know we could live here ' and the rest as they say is history, with us selling up and moving from the U.K. in the Millenium year.
We fell in love with this beautiful house and the stunning views straight away. It had been built by a stonemason for his family and was originally laid out as two apartments. Upstairs was completed but the ground floor was just a shell. It seemed perfect for our plans to create two holiday apartments downstairs. We moved in and started constructing the Girasole apartment but ran out of money before we could complete Limoni, so for the first years just rented the one apartment. Sadly my husband developed Alzheimer's and died in 2007. Shortly afterwards I was able to complete our dream, constructing the second apartment and putting in the pool and have now been renting out the two apartments for 5 years now.
As we pulled up outside the house that first visit I remember saying 'this is more like it'. The house was beautiful, uniquely constructed in white stone striated with pink and sand colours and the beautiful arched terrace just drew us in. Despite this, that first visit, we walked down the drive straight past the house drawn to the wonderful view behind. Guests who arrive during daylight do exactly the same, by-passing the house and going to the back to gaze at the lovely views. Luckily all the terraces and the sun lounger area overlook these views, so guests can just kick back and enjoy them as much as they like.
I live upstairs so am on hand to help with any queries, offer suggestions of places to visit or help with translation and am very happy to take guests to local events like village Festas that might seem daunting to visit on their own.
My younger guests in particular love the animals and often ask to help with feeding the chickens. One of my earlier cats became very popular by 'begging' like a dog when guests fired up the bar-b-que -he was very successful!
A fabulous location, friendly and knowledge host makes a totally relaxing holiday
Left on Aug 14, 2016 for a stay in Jul 2016
We (2 adults and 2 under 12 year olds) had an amazing time at Casa Julian: the house was ideally located for explorations to the big tourist draws of Siena, Florence and the many stunning hill top towns that dot the Umbrian and Tuscan landscape as well as Castiglione del largo. Added to this, the wonderful Jan was a font of knowledge, wisdom and very handy practical tips which really added to the holiday, and our night at the local village fiesta, complete with trumpet playing Peter Andre lookalike, will remain with us for a long, long time. Thank you Jan! I could go on and on praising Jan, the apartment and that part of Umbria, but perhaps it is easier to summarise just what an amazing place Casa Julian is by stating that my 9 year old cried both the night before we left, and on the morning we left (to go on to Rome for a few nights) because he had completely fallen in love with Casa Julian and the Castiglione del Lago / Lake Trasimeno area and didn't wish to go. We will definitely be heading back to Casa Julian as we've left a little bit of our soul there!
Jan is a wonderful person and an excellent host. Whereas already many tips are available in the appartment, Jan will also point out extra tips when you ask for them. The location is very close to Trasimeno and Chiusi lake, the latter you can even see from the terrace and pool. Location also easily allows visiting Perugia, Assisi, Siena, Montepulciano, Arrezo, Florence, ... A lovely vacation!
On arrival we were mildly surprised that the pictures we had received did not really do the property justice!
The property was well laid out and very spacious. There was a large lounge/dining kitchen which opened out to a patio and pool area and wonderful views. At the front was a lay garden and a driveway for cars.
The two double bedrooms were quite large and had plenty of storage. Mosquito nets were provided as were insect repellents as this is the Italian countryside where such things are probably essential, although we were quite fortunate in that respect.
The bathroom, too, was larger than expected and all facilities on the property worked as they should.
The property was very clean, light, airy and tastefully decorated. We had a welcome pack of food and drink in the fridge, which was an extremely thoughtful idea as we did not need to find any shops for the first day. This was a fantastic thought as it meant you could enjoy your holiday at the start, rather than worry about breakfast and dinner!
We saw Jan, the owner, most every day as she would often be seen tending to her chickens and small kitchen garden-cum small holding. She is a very personable and approachable lady who will always find time for a chat or offer answers to any questions we had. We even had some of her eggs which were delicious!
She had also provided dozens of leaflets/pamphlets and books relating to the local area and attractions and we even discussed a few with her. Her local knowledge was excellent and her advice spot on!
The location was quite rural, so a car is essential, but within 10 or 20 miles are beautiful villages and areas of outstanding beauty and interest. If you want to venture a little further, the town of Orvietto is a must see. So many restaurants - The Pellicano is a must - and the food is authentic and seasonal and the service is generally very good.
If you want to see the real Italy, this is the area, and you would be hard pressed to find a better location and a better property and host. I would have no hesitation in recommending Casa Julian to anyone I met, and will most probably visit there again some time in the future.
Comfortable accommodation fine for holiday let. Owner helpful and friendly but not intrusive.area not over touristy.Lakes a short drive away with lots of beautiful scenery.
Lovely welcome from Jan and her very friendly dogs on arrival. There were three adults staying in the apartment Limone and found it spacious, clean and with all the facilities needed to make it a lovely stay (the welcome pack was a bonus). The terrace was excellent with the sun from late morning on wards. Amazing views of the surrounding countryside and Lake Chiusi from the villa which has a much needed pool for cooling off. Jan was a wonderful host, very friendly and available when needed to give some great recommendations for places to eat and visit which proved perfect for us, especially the Festival in Citta della Pieve which would not have been on our itinerary otherwise. All in all this is a well priced and flexible base for exploring places like Montepulciano, Assissi, Orvieto and Cortona. A big thank you to Jan for her kindness and helping to make our holiday in Umbria a memorable one. Not forgetting Zen the most adorable ginger kitten you could ever wish to meet.
Accommodation exactly as described in the heart of glorious Umbrian countryside. Within easy reach of Lake Trasimeno and those wonderful Umbrian/Tuscan hill towns. The property owner/hostess lives in the property and is very helpful and friendly, with lots of tips on how to make the most of the holiday. Would definitely return!
