An old house, sympathetically modernised, in the centre of St Martin de Clelles, a small friendly village in the Trieve valley on the edge of the Vercors National Park. There are wonderful mountain views all round.
The house is spacious with 249 sq. metres. The ground floor is open plan with a large living area with comfortable seating and wood burning stove, a dining area with seating for 8 to 10 with French windows, and a well- equipped kitchen. On the first floor there are 2 double bedrooms, a bathroom with shower and bath and a separate toilet. On the second half floor there is a large sunny living room. On the second floor there are 2 more double bedrooms, and a bathroom with shower and toilet.
Outside, just opposite, there is a good-sized fenced garden with terraces on 2 levels, equipped with chairs and large extendable table and parasols. The views are spectacular in all directions. There is off road parking next to the garden.
We live in Kent and have always loved visiting France. We bought the property when we were still working but when we retired we were able to spend far more time in St Martin, restoring the house, high mountain walking and enjoying introducing our grandchildren to swimming and boulder hopping in the small river just below the cottage, climbing, canyoning, riding, sailing and exploring the markets and local cultural sites.
The Owner purchased this cottage in 1991
We chose the house for the beauty of the setting, the high mountain views, the pretty village, the space and the many outdoor activities so near at hand. We had friends living on the Vercors and searched around that area but when we dropped down into the Trieve valley with its verdant farm land surrounded by high snow clad mountains we fell in love with the beauty and calm of the area.
We liked the wisteria cascading down the front of the cottage, the fish scale tiled roof, the views of the L'obiou mountain from the French windows and the terrace, the thick ancient walls with all the nooks and crannies and its setting in the village near the old church.
The house is located at a height of 795 metres in St Martin de Clelles, a small pretty village, in the Trieve valley surrounded by 2900 metre mountains. It backs onto the Vercors National Park.
There is a fast-flowing boulder strewn small river below the cottage which offers unlimited adventures for children.
Alpine flowers including orchids are abundant particularly in May and June. Marmottes, bouquetins, chamois and chevreuil along with sangliers can be seen in the beech and coniferous forests. The mountains offer a wide variety of activities including rock climbing, via ferrata, hiking, canyoning and rafting. The nearby Lac Monteynard has sailing, canoeing and windsurfing. There are excellent open air swimming pools at Monestier and Mens. There are several riding stables with good horses for all standards.
There are 2 small scenic mountain railways which run through tunnels and over Victorian viaducts.
The Parcours Aventure at Batie has 10 levels of exciting climbing in the trees with very long zip wires.
There are museums, markets, caves and monasteries.
