We are Paul and Jenny Martin and we live in Oxfordshire. We always wanted to own a holiday home by the sea and Devon has a special attraction for Jenny and I as her family originate from Devon ( the churchyard in Combe Martin abounds with her ancestors). Once we discovered Brixham we knew it was for us as it provides all the elements of a classic British seaside holiday combined with being a real working town based around trawling. We love owning Mermaid Cottage and we and our family have had very happy holidays here with the children especially loving the crabbing and beach fun. We hope you enjoy your visit to Brixham as much as we do.
The Owner purchased this cottage in 2005
Brixham is a gem of a town. In season and out of season it’s an honest , natural place that welcomes visitors naturally and warmly. It has no pretensions , it does not need any as the beauty of the town and its wonderful location speak for themselves. The town relies heavily on fishing and this is reflected in the character of the people who go about their business in an unfussy, down to earth way. We have always found it a friendly and warm town of which we are very fond.
Mermaid Cottage is everything we imagined a holiday cottage should be and we have furnished it to be a comfortable holiday destination for ourselves and our guests. The views are breathtaking and the private elevated terrace position means we can sit outside and enjoy the views without any intrusion. The cottage has character and is roomy enough for 6 visitors to be easily accommodated
We had never been to Brixham before but had heard that there was lots to do and see in the town and in particular, the surrounding area. As it turned out, we parked the car in the nearby car park on the Thursday and didn't get back in it until we left the following Friday - some feat for a family six, with three very active boys aged 6, 8 and 10 and a daughter of 13 ! Everything we wanted was on the doorstep of Mermaid Cottage; with its stunning views of Torbay, Brixham Harbour and Berry Head, the cottage provided great family accommodation (pristine, good size and all the "home from home" facilities, equipment and utensils) and an excellent location from which to enjoy the delights of this fabulous holiday resort and fishing town. The centre and Quayside is only a five minute walk away, past the Marina and fish market (fresh fish sold daily) and is well served by a local Co op and Tesco's, a well stocked Deli, Fish & Chip shops, chemist, opticians etc, etc - we didn't need to visit a supermarket. During our stay there always seemed to be something going on about the place - Pirates running around the replica Golden Hind which is moored there, stalls doing face painting or selling arts and crafts, a choir singing and always kids (and parents) casting their crab lines into the water in the hope of catching a "whopper ". The Old Market House pub/restaurant can also be found on the Quayside and does great local beers and good food with a very reasonable kids menu. The Ghost Walk starts on the Quay and the kids thoroughly enjoyed "Deadly Dave's" ghoulish tales of the murderous goings on in old Brixham Fishtown and Cowtown. However, the high point for us all was Breakwater Beach where we happily spent at least a couple of hours everyday - clean, gently shelving and life guard attended, with a kiosk serving ice creams and hot and cold drinks and the Breakwater Bistro (plus well maintained public toilets) less than a stone's throw away. We all loved it, especially the kids when the local harbour seal swam within 10 feet of them as they played in the sea !
We very much enjoyed our time at Mermaid Cottage and thought Brixham was a fantastic place for a family holiday - we'll definitely be back !!
A lovely, well appointed cottage with amazing views over the harbour and out to see. We arrived in time for the local festival - Brixfest and there was live music all weekend and a spectacular firework display. It's well worth getting a jubilee pass for the local boat trips and steam trains combined. The cottage owners were very helpful and answered all questions promptly. I'd reccomend Goodrington sands for the kids. And the lido at Bridlington is great fun... Especially when the tide comes in and splashes you over the wall! Dartmouth is a lovely quaint place too and worth a trip.
Mermaid Cottage is a lovely, very clean, bright and modern cottage and we will definitely be staying there again when we next visit the "in-laws" in Brixham! The owners were so helpful before we stayed there and always promptly answered any questions we had. We have three children, the two eldest loved the view and when our toddler woke up one morning at 5am, it was very calming watching the fishing boats leaving the harbour! Mermaid Cottage is located very near the town and amenities and there is so much to do in and around Brixham. If you are looking for a seaside cottage, then definitely stay at Mermaid!
This is our 2nd stay at Mermaid and one of many visits to Brixham. Mermaid is clean bright and friendly. I love the big low windows as the light streams in and you can watch the everchanging view over the harbour and bay as day turns to night and back again. I watched a particularly beautiful sunrise from my bed. we caught the ferry to Torquay and Dartmouth the bus to Torquay and then the bus on to Babacombe all run very frequently and link well. My husband and son caught mackerel from the harbour wall and next time we will also get the steam train into Dartmouth. There are numerous great places to eat, get a take away to bring back or just browse the shops. A lovely cottage, and a lovely traditional seaside town. We will definitely come again. The only draw back is the steps to the cottages on Seaview Terrace and the steepish hills, you do need to be fairly fit. oh yes and the seal was also about and showing off in the harbour. Love it.
Myself, my daughter and four grandchildren had a perfect week at Mermaid Cottage. The cottage is so welcoming with beautiful decor and fantastic views, it was just lovely. Brixham is a picturesque harbour town with beaches and hidden coves all within walking distance, not to mention the crabbing! We foun(d that because the buses and ferries are so easy to use we didn't need a car, travelling to Paignton Zoo and Dartmouth by bus and Torquay by ferry. I have to eat gluten free and had no problem at all in Brixham even fish and chips from Rockfish and a gluten free cream tea from The Coffee House! I would definitely recommend Mermaid Cottage to anyone and I'm sure our first visit won't be our last. Just perfect!
Wow!! what a lovely cozy cottage. I have stayed in some lovely places around the world but Mermaid Cottage just stands out from the rest.Lovely cottage and lovely Brixham. Have already recommended to others. Back home in Broadstairs now but cant stop thinking of Mermaid. Will be right back.
We had a wonderful holiday at Mermaid cottage. The view every day across the harbour and bay was fantastic, always somethng going on. The cottage itself was an ideal base to see the local area and is itself only a 5 minute walk into the centre of Brixham, where we very much enjoyed being able to buy fresh fish everyday. The cottage was clean and airy with very comfy beds.
Brixham is a pretty English harbour town whose multi-coloured coloured fishermen’s cottages clinging to the hillside in crooked rows ooze character. The town’s sloping cobbled streets and traditional seaside shops create a laid back atmosphere and the bustling harbour side offers all the ingredients for a classic English seaside holiday - cream teas, crab sandwiches, shellfish, and crabbing from the harbour wall to name just a few
With 19 beaches and coves and a naturally sheltered port, holidays in Brixham are bound to include the ideal beach for you. The sloping sandy beach of Broadsands is two miles outside of Brixham and is a popular choice with families. Churston and Fishcombe Coves are sand shingle and the walk from Brixham to Broadsands through the coves passes through a wonderful combination of rugged coastline and attractive woodland. Alternatively, Breakwater Beach is very family-friendly, a shingle beach with easy access ,plenty of parking and includes facilities.
Brixham’s maritime past is reflected in the presence of the Golden Hind replica in the harbour and the brand new ‘Smugglers Story’ 3D attraction. More up to date maritime adventures can be enjoyed with the plentiful fishing trips , cruises to Dartmouth and the regular ferry crossing to and from Torquay and Paignton.
As well as the great things to do in Brixham the whole area throngs with wonderful options for super days out. These include the award winning Paignton Zoo, the Babbacombe Model Village and Kent’s Cavern in Torquay and do not miss the scenic steam train from Paignton to Dartmouth or a trip to nearby mysterious Dartmoor. For the more adventurous the Crealy Adventure Park and Woodlands Family Theme park offer thrills and spills in equal measure.
