Overview

About the property

5 beds, sleeps 10, 12m x 3m long pool: ideal for children.

Completed in 2012 this five family bed villa was designed and built by an award winning architect for his own family.

The villa is located on the edge of Ceret and commands views across the Vallespir to the north and Le Canigou to the west. Located in a quiet area it is a fifteen minute walk to the shops, bars and pavement cafés of Ceret. Immediately above the private rear garden to the south you are in the countryside. Find the path, “le balcon de Ceret”, it winds its way through the edge of the forest: west to the waterfalls (ten minutes) and east to the village of Maureillas (about two hours). The forest continues beyond the frontier to Spain: nothing in between.

The main part of the villa is open plan: large Kitchen, breakfast island unit, dining and living area, the latter opening onto the terrace next to the swimming pool. The kitchen has a large island unit which is ideal to accomodate extra quests, particularly children. Out of season the Kitchen is used as the venue for a cookery course.

The living area, where in the Summer months the fig tree and the oak trees shade the huge glazed wall which extends the length of the whole space and rises literally from the top of the pool, you will enjoy the calm atmosphere created by the dappled light reflected on the ceiling from the pool where the water laps almost up to the glass along the whole length of the room and beyond. You may compare this atmosphere to that in Ceret where the canopies of the huge plane trees filter the sunlight leaving an unforgettable atmosphere of calm and tranquillity, an oasis offering shelter from the burning dry heat of summer.

Above the open plan living space are located two bedrooms with between, a Jack and Gill type shared shower room. There is no lock on these two doors so you may consider the two bedrooms unsuitable for other than membres of the same family. Downstairs, on almost the same level as the living spaces is a large bedroom with en suite bathroom and dressing area. This bedroom is almost two storeys high and has a fully glazed gable wall facing south-east with views of the wooded hillside. Below are located two more double bedrooms that share a shower room. With five double bedrooms ten guests can easily be accommodated.

The pool, located to the south of the villa, extends the length of the house, providing excellent surveillance of the children from within. Measuring 12m by 3m and just over 1m deep, it was designed for serious swimming but it has also proved perfect for volley ball and other such pool games, especially for the children who are comfortable playing in a relatively shallow depth of water. A terrace is located to both ends, the one to the west, accessed direct off the living area, is for dining. Here there is also a table tennis table.

About Chris Hewitt

We fell in love with Ceret and came to live here from the UK in 2005. Our original intention was to stay for just twelve months and then return each holiday. Before the end of that first year we had all made up our minds that we didn't want to leave. However our two bedroom village house, located in the historic centre, whilst suitable for a holiday home, was not ideal for a family of four and so we built our own, completing it in 2012.

Chris Hewitt purchased this villa in 2012

Why Chris Hewitt chose Céret

We wanted to live somewhere just outside and yet accessible to the centre of Ceret. The house is set in a quiet area with friendly neighbours. We now have plenty of sunny outside space, a large garden, and a swimming pool. We also have some wonderful views. After living here for over five years in the house my spirits are still lifted each morning as I pass through to the Kitchen and glance up through the hall window at Le Canigou - almost invariably radiant under the rising sun and up until the end of May: snow capped.

What makes this villa unique

As an architect who has specialised in designing clients houses for some twenty five years I wasn't going to pass the opportunity to do the same here in Ceret for my family. I wanted to build a modern house inspired by Catalan culture and so the design responds to the local vernacular but reinterpreted in the context of a truly modern house. The house has also been designed to respond to the sloping topography of the site, the mountains at the rear and the micro climate to produce a unique design that is entirely contextual in its creation. So besides staying in a lovely unspoilt area you also have the opportunity to stay in a designer house.

Fantastic stay at Rue de Astrabol

  • 5 of 5

This was an excellent base for our families to explore Ceret and the beautiful surrounding Pyrenees area. The accommodation was perfect for the 8 of us, with three ever so necessary air conditioned rooms and great showers. It had great use of space and an open plan lounge that overlooked the pool. This was ideal as the kids used it everyday and as parents we felt this was extremely safe. The pool itself was brilliant being all one depth and we had so much fun playing volley ball.

The house contained everything we needed in terms of catering including a very fast BBQ.

Our host was available at all times so this was reassuring.

There is a local waterfall which is a 10min walk away which is wonderful don't forget your trunks because the swimming there is delightful.

I recommend visiting Colliore, Argeles sur mer, and if feeling adventurous Carcassone or Villefranches and even Gorges de la fou.

Thanks Chris - excellent visit.

Spectacular, comfortable home close to Ceret

  • 5 of 5

This spacious contemporary home was perfect for three generations to vacation close to the dynamic small town of Ceret. The children loved the pool so much that it was hard to interest them in nearby activities. With three levels, each generation had privacy. We made good use of the well-equipped kitchen and enjoyed the nearness of the pool outside. The neighborhood was residential and quiet at night even the boisterous weekend of the bullfight festivities. We often walked into town for pizza or dinner at one of the many good restaurants. At Atelier Fred we celebrated my 70th birthday with wonderful food, wine and creative desserts.

The Mediterranean beaches are less than an hour away and many beautiful hiking trails are nearby. On a hot day all of us enjoyed the Gorges du Fou walkway over cold rushing water. My daughter and I drove to the factory where espadrilles are made.

Chris was a gracious host even when we arrived early with groceries that needed refrigeration. He provided much information about the house and made us feel at home. We hope to return again soon.

Will Definitely Be Back!

  • 5 of 5

Really special property 15 mins walk from the centre of Ceret. We enjoyed a week here last summer!

This a unique beautifully designed house, it is furnished stylishly throughout, the kitchen / dining / living space overlooking the pool was a great space, we ended up cooking and eating in more than we planned!

It is a really tranquil spot with great views of the mountains, we spent quite a few days relaxing beside the pool. The waterfall walk is a must, we packed a picnic and had dinner down there after a swim in the falls.

It was our first visit to Ceret, the Tuesday night market is definitely worth a visit. We found a great tapas restaurant in the square, there was a real family friendly festival atmosphere with lots going on!

Fontaine De Buit is a BBQ spot where you can cook your own food and listen to live music, Moules Frites is on offer if you don;t fancy BBQing.

Excellent séjour dans superbe villa entre mer et montagnes

  • 5 of 5

  • 5 of 5

Argeles Sur Mer
Car: recommended

The Languedoc is the most southerly of mainland France and boasts over 300 days of sunshine per year. This part of French Catalonia offers some dramatic scenery and is a must for enthusiastic walkers. The summit of the Canigou Mountain is over 9000ft high and is accessible both on foot and by road for most of the year.

In addition to the wooded hillsides and valleys the coast is within easy reach. Here you will find beautiful white sandy beaches and further south a striking mountainous coastline. The magnificent beach of Argeles Sur Mer is just 30 minutes drive away, as is the beautiful town of Collioure – the base for Matisse, Derain, and other great Fauvist painters.

There are good golf courses in the area such as Saint Cyprien 18 hole international course and the superb mountain course at Domaine De Falgos. Horse riding, pony trekking, scuba diving, boat trips, wind/ kite surfing and the famous gorges are also nearby. However if you simply want a quiet relaxing holiday this interesting region has one of the best climates in the south of France.

The proximity to the Spanish border offers the opportunity to explore the Costa Brava, Girona and Figueres. Barcelona is but two hours away.

Ceret is a quaint medieval market town nestling on the lower slopes of the Pyrenees, characterised in faded grandeur by cobbled narrow streets and intimate squares with a host of restaurants, boutiques and pavement cafes, it boasts a distinctly Catalan culture and even has its own bullring: still in use. The town hosts the annual Feria – a festival where the young torus roam the main streets shepherded by the magnificent chevaliers from Le Camargue.

There are festivals throughout the year commencing with the carnival in March, then the cherry festival in spring where we celebrate the first crop of cherries to be harvested in France.

From the early twentieth century Ceret attracted famous artists such as Picasso, Chagall, Monolo, Soutine, Haviland and Brune who resided and painted in the town. It was in the austere post war period, 1946, and facing an uncertain future, that the idea developed of creating a musee municipal. With the opening of the gallery the artistic cultural life of the town continued to thrive, encouraged by the then mayor, Michel Sageloly who courted the greats of the period: Salvador Dali amongst others. The gallery regularly hosts major modern art exhibitions and has acted as a catalyst, encouraging a rich artistic culture that today still pervades the town.

The artistic life of the community is inclined to eclipse our perception of another important cultural element; the lively and diverse music scene where in summer on any evening it is a rarity not to find at least one venue hosting live jazz or other form of music. If your itinerary only allows limited scope fo dining out in Ceret we would recommend Tuesday when the night market takes place (July and August). The Saturday morning market is also well worth a visit being the must destination for locals from all over the region throughout the year.

Just 10km from the Spanish border and less than 30 minutes from the beaches of the Mediterranean this destination couldn’t be better suited to a holiday offering the choice of relaxed enjoyment and cultural diversity.
