About the property

Cottage, 2 Bedrooms, 2 Baths, (Sleeps 5)

Nestled in the tiny hillside village of Beynac, La Petite Maison invokes a timeless sense of charm and beauty. Catch a glimpse of medieval life in this 500 year old home and explore the most scenic and breathtaking villages of Southwest France.

Unlike many homes listed under Beynac in the VRBO directory, La Petite Maison enjoys a central location within the actual village and is one of the most picturesque homes in Beynac. Situated on a cobbled footpath leading to the Chateau, your medieval adventure awaits. Step inside into a quiet retreat and enjoy the charm of its thick stone walls and heavy chestnut timbers. Many of its furnishings date back to the 1700’s including the dining table and buffet, both made of walnut in the local Perigordian style.

Amenities include:

• Central village setting just steps away from bakery, grocery store, restaurants, ATM, post office, galleries, hairdresser, and pharmacy

• Two romantic master bedrooms with ensuite bathrooms, one with a four poster antique colonial bed, the other in the style of Louis XV

• Fully modern bathrooms fitted with spa shower cabins, perfect for helping you relax after a busy day of sightseeing

• Fully equipped kitchen to make dining in easy and stress free

• High ceilings with large chestnut wood beams in the living/dining room with local antiques and leather furniture

• Massive stone fireplace with stove insert and antique copper accents

La Petite Maison is perfect for couples and small families. With two master bedrooms, it sleeps 4 very comfortably but may also sleep 1 additional guest in a single bed in the upstairs bedroom.

No one will have to draw straws for the kid’s bedroom because this cottage has two full sized master suites each with its own private ensuite bathroom. A common living area with the sitting room and dining area separates the bedrooms above and below. The living room boasts a massive stone fireplace, antique copper, and leather furniture, which accentuates the comfort and enjoyment of staying in your own place.

In the upstairs bath you will find a fully modern step-down bathroom fitted with handmade Italian tiles, an ultra relaxing shower cabin, vanity and a Napoleon III armoire. The downstairs bathroom is fitted with a luxury spa shower featuring 8 shower heads, an extra large sink, heated towel warmers and beautiful Italian marble tile.

The village of Beynac consists of a cluster of golden-stone houses beneath a dramatic 500 foot cliff. Perched at the top stands the 12th century Chateau Beynac, rising from the sheer cliff face along the most historic and scenic section of the Dordogne River. With its formidable Chateau, rows of charming houses, and the gentle river below, the setting is simply captivating. La Petite Maison makes for an ideal home base for visiting all the picturesque villages in the Perigord Noir, including Domme, La Roque-Gageac, Castelnaud, Monpazier, and Sarlat, the most historically preserved medieval city in all of France.

Beynac castle is renowned for being one of the best preserved medieval castles in France. It was painstakingly restored last century using only the tools of the medieval craftsman. From the castle terrace, the chateaux of Marqueyssac, Fayrac, and Castelnaud are all within view across the verdant tapestry of this beautiful valley.

Nowhere have we found a more tranquil, beautiful, and romantic setting than here in the Dordogne. Whether you are exploring fairy tale castles, strolling a local market, wandering through cobblestone streets, studying prehistoric cave art, or simply taking in the unspoiled countryside, you will come to understand why this is one of the most endearing regions in all of Europe. Designated by the French government as one of the Most Beautiful Villages of France, Beynac never fails to impress.

About The Owner

We are avid Francophiles and love to travel in Europe. We've been coming to Beynac since 1997 and immediately felt a sense of connection to this charming little village in this beautiful region of France. Some years we visited several times. Eventually, we found a place of our own. This is more than a vacation rental to us, it's a second home.

The Owner purchased this cottage in 2006

Why The Owner chose Perigord Blanc

Beynac feels like home to us. Like a story book village lost in time that we had only read or dreamed about, it deserves its designation as Most Beautiful Village of France.

What makes this cottage unique

La Petite Maison enjoys a central village location. Located on a footpath leading up the chateau but far enough to be off the main road and away from street noise. Just steps away are the best restaurants in the village, a snack shop, gift shops, bakery, grocer, post office, pharmacy and ATM.

Guestbook comments from the owner

We enjoyed Beynac and the surrounding area. What a beautiful part of

the world! Your little cottage was the perfect place to absorb the atmosphere

of the medieval village, everything was fine and it was a very relaxing

place to unwind after a hectic day out!! It also provided us with the

oppurtunity to buy and prepare food from the wonderful local markets--

something special!! Your information was a great help and very much

Once again, many thanks

Superbly furnished property in a fabulous French village

  • 5 of 5

We were delighted with our stay at La Petite Maison in Beynac. The owners had anticipated our every need and then some! The kitchen was fully equipped ... even three whisks, a choice of corkscrews and a full range of knives. Books and videos for information and entertainment. Two very spacious bedrooms with ensuite bathrooms.

And the village! Everyone was so friendly! We had some really fun pronunciation lessons at dinner one night. The Tourisme Info staff were well informed and helpful. And Martine, our host's representative was charming and fun!

Beynac is in the middle of a rich and vibrant area. Recreation, culture, food, outdoors, history! It's all there. Float down the Dordogne River, visit the cave paintings, eat foie gras. Live the good life in Beynac.

Absolutely perfect! Everyone associated with our rental was outstanding. Just loved it!!!!!

This was a dream!!!!!! Beynac is one of the most beautiful places in the world. So relaxing and so, so charming. We laid around a lot as we were with our daughter who has a demanding job, but the day trips, canoeing etc could keep you busy every day. Our Maison was spotlessly clean, perfect in every way. Our memories will stay with us forever. Jeanie and Dave Cowan. Pinetop, Arizona.

One of our top five vacations!

  • 5 of 5

If you're thinking about a French vacation that's a little different from the norm, visit the incredible Dordogne region. Do yourself a favor and make a point of staying in one of the charming villages that dot this countryside. We stayed in Beynac et Cazenac in one of the cutest cottages in the entire village; Le Petite Maison!

For the right people, you will also have one of your best vacations ever. Firstly, you need a car. There is too much to see and do in this region and public transport will not serve you adequately. Beynac and most of the other hillside towns are pretty steep to get around. So you need to be reasonably agile. I'm not overly fit, so there was a bit off huffing and puffing on my part. The house itself is so charming and very well equipped. There are two pretty steep and narrow staircases leading to the bedrooms. One up and one down. I would not recommend for families with small children. There is, however, a gate in front of the staircase that leads down. We stayed in the downstairs bedroom because it was lovely and cool. Also nice and dark for those afternoon naps. August was pretty hot and very busy. Didn't really detract from our experience, but when we return, it will be in May/June.

Vincent does a marvelous job of managing his properties. He cares a great deal about their upkeep and about his clientele. He is always very quick to respond and has a wealth of knowledge about the area. He also has a larger place, also in Beynac, further up the hill. Martine is the housekeeper. She does not speak English and our French is not the best but we had a great time trying to chat with one another. It's surprising what you can actually communicate when you make an effort. She is such a happy lady! We also met Sarissa, who checked us in. Her English/French is brilliant, although she is actually Dutch.

In a nutshell, go to the Dordogne, stay in Beynac, get in touch with Vincent. You'll have the best time!

Greeat Cottage in Beautiful Village

  • 5 of 5

La Petite Maison looked like a "dream" on line and it was a dream in reality. The owners provide their guests with every amenity and the house is furnished tastefully and to a high standard. The house is located in the center of Beynac et Cezenac and one has only to roll out of bed to visit the village, castle, and a number of absolutely first-rate restaurants.

Martine, the resident care taker and major factototem, is a force of nature and very helpful to her guests. Desipite the fact that she speaks little English was no barrier to communication. In fact, we learned more colloquial French from her than we did in several years at Tufts and Yale!

Whether you canoe or kayak on the Dordogne River, or spend your time visiting the splendid castles and chateaux that dot the area, you won't be at a loss for things to do.

We would also recomme nd a visit to the vinyards in Cahors and Bergerac for a nice experience without the crowds on the wime train near Bordeaux.

The owner, Vincent, provides one of the most complete guides to the house and area that we have even received and we have been renting such places for decades.

My advice, Grab the chance to stay at La Petite Maison!

Fairy tale house

  • 5 of 5

From the moment we entered La Petite Maison, we were in awe of the charm and touches throughout. We spent four weeks in the Dordogne region of France where we submerged ourselves in the local cuisine and culture. Each day my husband and I would head out for a new adventure and after hours of visiting a nearby castle, cave or town we were always glad to come back to our little house where we could throw open the windows and listen to the people passing by or sit out on the patio and chat with those walking up to the Beynac castle.

Everything about our stay was delightful and Vincent provided us with specific recommendation and instruction for the house and area. This was very much appreciated.

Martine is a delight and I enjoyed many conversations with her.

A Charming House in a Beautiful Village

  • 5 of 5

Our second stay at La Petite Maison was as wonderful as our first. The house is perfectly situated, easy walking distance to restaurants, shops, the chateau and the river. It is nicely decorated and well maintained, and the multi story layout of the house allowed plenty of privacy for the two couples along with a comfortable living and dining area. We have often found historic European properties to be strong on charm but low in functionality—La Petite Maison has plenty of both. The bathrooms and showers were great, and the washer/ dryer actually got our clothes clean and dry without taking all day. The welcome basket was a nice amenity, and having La Petite Tournelle, a very good restaurant run by friendly proprietors, practically outside our doorstep was wonderful. We had dinner there thee evenings and it was excellent each time.

Beynac is a perfect base for exploring the Dordogne—we enjoyed walking in neighboring villages, canoeing on the river and visiting the market in St. Cyprien. Vincent was very responsive and provided us with a wealth of information to help us prepare for and make the most of our stay. We look forward to returning for another stay soon.
