About Enisa Stricker

I retired to this lovely island eight years ago. Before that I lived in central London for over 30 years. That's why I now prefer to live further from the centre of town and away from heavy traffic.

Funchal is built on hills. My house is suited on the central hill. That's why I have this superb view of the harbor and town below. I am only 10 minutes drive away from the center of town and the sea.

Enisa Stricker purchased this house in 2007

Why Enisa Stricker chose Funchal

I bought this house because I wanted to live close to unspoilt nature and yet have an easy and quick access to the centre of Funchal.

I am very near a beautiful forest ideally suited for daily walking and enjoying this exquisite, peaceful region of unique natural beauty and diverse scenery. It is perfect for a healthy living, and the quiet rest after your various activities in town or Levada walking. It is very quiet in my neighborhood.

What makes this house unique

The house is built at such an angle that even during the hottest weather the inside of the house is just pleasantly warm, never oppressively hot.

It is suited in a lovely, quiet suburb, residential area on one of a small central hills, 10 minutes by car to the centre of town.

You can enjoy daily walk and run in the forest and go for a swim in the sea on the same afternoon.

This is an ideal place to get away from it all, stay and exercise in a fresh air, far from noise and traffic, connect with nature and enjoy the most spectacular views over surrounding hills, the Funchal harbour and the sea beyond.

Fantastic Funchal

  • 5 of 5

This is a beautiful house with quality furnishings, fittings, bed linen and towels. We had a wonderful holiday, a very big thank you to owner Enisa. The house overlooks the bay of Funchal so beautiful day and night views watching the cruise ships come and go. There are many attractions in Funchal to cater for all tastes. Wonderful restaurants, cafes, cleanliness, safety together with the friendly, helpful people make this a perfect destination. The house would be an escape from the heat and traffic of downtown during the height of Summer. We would give this property six stars if we could and hope to return next year.

Owner's Response: I am always happy to hear that people enjoyed staying in my house, particularly when stay was long one like yours. Thank you. I agree with you Funchal is the perfect destination for all around rest. The best part of staying in my house is not only fantastic view of the bay of Funchal, and the peace and quiet, almost free of traffic, but the easy and quick access to the seashore and the centre of Funchal, and best of all, chance to connect with Nature any time you feel like, because this lovely forest is only about 6-7 minutes walk from my house. So here you really have it all for the perfect rest, body and soul. Looking forward to your next stay here.

Lovely stay in wonderful house

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I had perfect ten days in december at this lovely house (which my brother recommended to us). With its space for originally six people the two storey appartement felt for the two of us a bit like a palace with its four terraces, the huge living room with the fireplace and the stunning view over Funchal and the harbour. The house is generous and very well equipped (my own kitchen at home is less appointed ;-), the furniture is elegant and in a good condition.

We originally had planned to do a lot of hiking but the house felt so comfy and homely that we spent quite a lot of time just sitting on one of the terraces enjoying the view.

There are only two things that must be considered: A car would be advisable (there is a bus to the centre but it's only once an hour and walking would need a pretty good condition) and you would have to get used to all the barking dogs in the neighborhood - but this is a "problem" in whole Funchal).

Overall we can highly recommend this house. I'm pretty sure we will do it again :-)

Owner's Response: Thank you for your lovely review. I am so happy to hear you enjoyed your stay here. As for the car, almost all the people who rent with me do rent the car. It really is the best way to see the rest of the island , and it is worth it, because there is so much to see and enjoy on this little island. As my house is on the central hill, it is very quick access to the centre of town (10 minutes) and yet it is so enjoyable to rest here in the fresh air, because it is almost traffic free. As for the dogs, they do have a lot of rest from barking too... and then it is a complete silence in my neighbored. I personally think it is not annoying and constant as traffic and general noise is. You still can enjoy your solitude and almost everybody loves it here because of it. But then again I love dogs, though I don't have one. Hopefully, I will see you again in lovely Madeira.

Birthday Visit with friends

  • 5 of 5

Due to timing of flights arrived late but we were well met by Enisa, when we found the house, difficult in the dark, but all was well.

House is great, plenty of room and great views over Funchal, well appointed kitchen in fact possibly too well appointed and Enisa is very helpful with information.

Place was very clean and the sound system with the TV is really powerful, a list of the available TV channels would have been helpful but in the end we just founds an MTV channel with the music we liked, well some of us.

Local supermarket was good and the bar down the road is really good value for drinks and bread, but only seemed to sell cakes but for a really good lunch ask Enisa about the cookery school, it's really good.

We had plenty of lunches in town, all of them good, but the best was from the Muralha down in the old town, and you must have the Espada (Scabbard fish) either with the traditional banana or with the garlic sauce.

All in all a really good time was had by us all but we felt that although you can get a bus close to the house a car is really useful, if only for the shopping, and if you need to sleep with the bedroom windows open and/or are a light sleeper then ear plugs could be useful, as the local dogs can occasionally be noisy.

The walk from behind the house just up the hill is interesting and there are always the Gardens and the lavadas and the catamaran trips to whale watch.

It was a great holiday in a great place, and over 20 C at the end of November, fantastic.

Owner's Response: Thank you for your very informative review. I am very happy to hear you enjoyed your stay here. You are right about the list of television channels, I should have done that, but for some reason never thought of it…I will rectify that and make one for my future guests. Hope to see you all again some day.

Wonderful view !

  • 5 of 5

Enisa was a fantastic owner ! We arrived earlier than expected and she welcomed us very well. Every morning, she came to say hello while we had our breakfast on her lovely balcony. The view is amazing every day. She kept the house very clean while we went hiking. She gave us good advices according to the weather. The house is huge and we used her great barbecue to cook a delicious tuna. We did not use all the house's possibilities because we were outdoors most of the time. It is a really great place to stay in Funchal. Moreover, the local highway is just 5/10 minutes from the house. You can park the car in the street next to the house which is relatively flat for the streets in Madeira (you'll see!). We had a wonderful week with our family thanks to Enisa's house. So don't hesitate !

Fabulous property with amazing views.

  • 5 of 5

The house was very well equipped and clean with plenty of room. We loved the views from the terrace- a fabulous place for breakfast. Enisa was very helpful, giving good advice on places to visit and made us feel very much at home. The little cafe just down the road was a great place for coffee and cakes at remarkable prices. We had good walks including Sao Lourenco,Pico Ruivo and The Nun's Valley. We also enjoyed walking down the hill into town and then getting a bus or taxi home. We would definitely recommend this property to anyone visiting Maderia it is fabulous!

Beautiful accommodation with stunning views

  • 5 of 5

We are three friends who were looking for a 3 bedded villa as a base for our first holiday in Madeira. We were not disappointed, it is very spacious accommodation with amazing views over Funchal from the lounge, terraces and bedrooms. We had some inclement weather towards the end of our stay so the log fire was most welcome.

We opted to use local transport rather than hiring a car and it worked well for us - a weekly bus ticket for unlimited travel in the Funcgal area cost just over €22 each but you need to be reasonably fit as there is a very steep climb up from the bus stop.

The owner, Enisa was lovely and thought of everything from buying our bus tickets in advance to organising shopping for our first night/ morning as we arrived in the evening. Its fair to say she went above the call of duty and it was greatly appreciated.

We did a couple of Levada walks which we enjoyed and visited the botanical gardens and went down from Monte on a sledge which was great fun.

We found some really good restaurants and would recommend them, some are:-

La Au Fundo - just before museum of contemporary art (yellow fort); Venda da Donna Maria in Rua de Santa Maria ( the road with interesting painted doors; Escolia Hotel - Portuguese cooking school - amazing value €7 for 3 course buffet lunch!

We had lunch at Miradouro snack bar near to the bus stop and view point at Cabo Girao which again was excellent value for money.

Our tips - visit the amazing Funchal indoor market but read tips on trip advisor first as there are some rogue market traders on the first floor. Take warm clothes in case of bad weather as the temperature can plummit.

All in all a really lovely holiday that was great value for money.

Owner's Response: Thank you for your lovely review. I am always so happy to know when my guests enjoyed their stay at my house. As for that steep part of the road, well, it’s only about 30 meters long, and it’s good for our health to walk up the hill too. I walk it daily with greatest of ease. That’s why I have that fantastic view. Anyhow most of my guests rent the car, which enables them to be in the centre of town in 10 minutes drive. They usually come for the active walking holiday and love to be closer to the nature, rather then down in town. Funchal has a lot of up hill walks even down in town which are longer than mine.
