Tranquil Retreat, away from the noise and traffic

…and yet easy, quick access to the centre of Funchal and promenade, only 10 minutes by car.

It’s the ideal house for sun, quietness and nature lovers, near beautiful eucalyptus forest for daily walks.

Thanks to wood flooring throughout and ventilated Venetian window shutters a comfortable temperature inside the apartment is always pleasant, even on the hottest days. It is light and airy thanks to floor to ceiling French windows throughout.

The 3 bedrooms Apartment in Casa Alegra, a substantial, fantastically appointed modern detached house on the central, sunny hill, is spacious, comfortable and well equipped. It is the only one Apartment to rent in this house. You will find it remarkably quiet and private.

It has incredible views over the bay of Funchal and is the perfect base for exploring the whole island. If you want to spend most of your time in almost traffic free area, and clean air, while enjoying spectacular views over the hills, town, Harbor and sea, then this is the place for you.

The internal living accommodation available to you is 200m2 (square meters) over two floors (gym and barbecue area are in addition to this).

The spacious sitting room, with real log fireplace and French windows is open plan to the dining room and opens onto the surrounding covered terraces. There is a large flat screen television with cable access (many language channels), fast Internet and some DVDs, books and magazines for guests to enjoy.

There are 4 terraces: each bedroom has a terrace with view of the sea, hills, town below and the harbor. All the rooms have French windows, leading onto terraces.

In each bedroom are curtains, daylight blackout curtains facility, and ventilated shatters. Each bedroom has a large, double wardrobe.

The main bedroom has an en suite bathroom. There is one more bathroom and one further cloakroom / WCs.

The kitchen is a spacious, modern, fully equipped with all the necessary appliances and utensils: induction hob, big and small oven, fridge/freezer, microwave, dishwasher, washing machine, coffee maker, blender, toaster and so on.

Outside there is cultivated garden, two generous terraces, where you can enjoy magnificent views, dine outside in the sun, then, there are loungers and hammock for lazy afternoons and a traditional stone barbecue area. The terraces are the perfect place to enjoy Madeira's famous New Year's fireworks.

Located in a tranquil, upmarket residential area, Casa Alegra is only 10 minutes drive by car from the center of Funchal with its restaurants, art and culture or 20 minutes by bus (regular service, 3 minute walk to the bus stop and a bit longer on the way back, because there is about 30 meters of uphill walk). These partly uphill walks you will come across all over the island, even in the centre of Funchal.

One of the biggest Supermarkets in Funchal is only 5 minutes drive from the house. Drive to the beach is about 15 minutes.

The walkers will enjoy local forest, when they can’t be bothered to go for lengthy Levada walks Madeira is famous for.

Every part of island is within easy reach and renting a car is highly recommended for enjoying all the best that the beautiful island of Madeira has to offer.


Cancellation policy: 100% refund for cancellations more than 60 days before check-in date. This actually applies more for deposit as you are are paying balance to Agency only 2 weeks before arrival.

Arrivals welcome on any day. The time of arrival and departure is flexible too.

Beach towels are supplied for 6 people and of course bath towels too. You don't need to bring any of yours.

Hairdryer is supplied as well.

No smoking on the premises, except for one outside terrace, further from the living areas, where you can smoke.

There are supplies of guidebooks and local maps for initial use.

A baby and toddler’s cot is available, if required, (please request when booking).

Airport transfers and general taxi services can be arranged on request.

It is self-catering and I do supply everything necessary to keep Apartment clean, but if you want cleaning to be done by maid it can be arranged too, at €5 per hour.

Any additional changes after booking, like adding extra people or changing dates has to be dealt with HomeAway and not with me directly. Only Agency you booked with can deal with these changes and adjust the bill accordingly.

About Enisa Stricker

I retired to this lovely island eight years ago. Before that I lived in central London for over 30 years. That's why I now prefer to live further from the centre of town and away from heavy traffic.

Funchal is built on hills. My house is suited on the central hill. That's why I have this superb view of the harbor and town below. I am only 10 minutes drive away from the centre of town and the sea.

I bought this house because I wanted to live close to unspoilt nature and yet have an easy and quick access to the centre of Funchal.

I am very near a beautiful forest ideally suited for daily walking and enjoying this exquisite, peaceful region of unique natural beauty and diverse scenery. It is perfect for a healthy living, and the quiet rest after your various activities in town or Levada walking. It is very quiet in my neighborhood.

What makes this apartment unique

The house is built at such an angle that even during the hottest weather the inside of the house is just pleasantly warm, never oppressively hot.

It is suited in a lovely, quiet suburb, residential area on one of a small central hills, 10 minutes by car to the centre of town.

You can enjoy daily walk and run in the forest and go for a swim in the sea on the same afternoon.

This is an ideal place to get away from it all, stay and exercise in a fresh air, far from noise and traffic, connect with nature and enjoy the most spectacular views over surrounding hills, the Funchal harbour and the sea beyond.

We had 5 nights at this gorgeous home lovingly created by its charming owner Enisa. The furnishings,decor and facilities are of the highest standard and the views are inspirational. Tremendous value too.

Beautiful home with lots of room and a wonderful view of Funchal.

The house had everything you could want for your stay on the island. We ended up cooking at the house more than expected; there is an outdoor fireplace to cook with wood. For us this was a special treat. In the living area there is a lovely fireplace which we used in the evenings which were cool. Make sure to bring layers. Enise was away for the holidays but was always available. Although I am sorry to say we did cause her some stress and she was very understanding. Don't hesitate to rent this house.

We plan our vacation months in advanced based on having a rental car - unfortunately my husband's license was missing. Now we had to rethink our vacation. Although it is a challenge to rent this house without a car – it can be done.

There is a bus stop very close to the home. We used the buses and taxis to get around the Funchal. We scheduled tours to do Levada walks, caves and to visit Porto Moniz. The tours pick you up at the house. We took a public bus outside of the city to Santana, where there are the thatched-triangle shape houses although we were disappointed the ride and the views in Santana were well worth the trip. For buses outside Funchal you pay on the bus and you need to pick them up downtown near the harbor. You can actually take the buses to most of the places that we toured. Be careful of the schedules and pick up times and locations.

We were visiting Madeira for the holidays. What a beautiful time of year to see all Christmas lights, and nativity sets everywhere you go. The center of Funchal had dancers and all kinds of activities and of course the fireworks. This house provided the perfect spot for the fireworks display.

Very welcoming and supportive owner, apartment very nice and well fitted.

Enisa the owner could not have been more helpful. The garden is full of herbs which she encouraged us to use, she pointed out local walks not included on maps and advised us on the best local shops and beach. Every day we would come back to the fire newly laid and ready for use that evening. Thank you Enisa.

Stunning location & perfect host!

We just returned from an ideal week at Enisa's beautiful home. She made us feel welcome from the moment we arrived at the doorstep, showing us all the features of the home with a fire already burning to warm the lounge. As we stayed at the end of March, it was still cool in the evenings, but Enisa was very generous to provide ample firewood for our use, cleaned the ashes each day while we were out, and arranged logs for our next evenings. The home is more spacious than the pictures can show, in addition to the ample patio and terrace to enjoy the stunning views of Funchal.

Enisa is a wealth of knowledge of where to enjoy and how to get around Madeira. We greatly enjoyed her company each time we saw her. She does live on the lower floor of the home, however we were never disturbed or felt at all that we didn't have full privacy. The home is well supplied for any meals needed to prepare in the kitchen, linens were fresh and clean, plus she offered extra pillows and blankets for our comfort. A bonus we felt is that the home is very tastefully decorated without any personal items that may make you think you're staying at someone's home. We had the feel of staying at a 5 star property!

We would highly recommend staying at this property to any friends going on holiday to Madeira! This is by far at the top of our list of vacation rentals for a travelling family of 5.

wonderful views

Enisa greeted us on arrival and made us feel at home in her spacious house. It is large and well equipped and situated in a residential area high above Funchal centre. It was very clean and had plenty of towels, spare bedding etc available.

There is a regular bus service from the end of the street which is only a short, but very steep, distance away. Once out of the centre of Funchal everywhere is steep!

There is a small supermarket and also a bakery a short bus ride away and a much larger supermarket a little further on, There are no restaurants within walking distance but Funchal is reached in minutes by car or bus and there is then a huge choice of eating places. Eating at home is easy as all you need for cooking is provided.

Being situated in a residential area the location is not at all touristy but it does suffer from the local dogs barking.

The view from the terrace and front windows are amazing with a panoramic view of Funchal and the bay, which is interesting both in the day and night time.

Enisa was a very helpful and friendly hostess and we really enjoyed our stay at her home.

On arrival Enisa met us at the gate and immediately made us welcome.

On the second day took us to the town on the bus to show us where to get tickets etc. The Villa is very well equipped with everything you might need for your stay. Sometimes up high it can get cooler in the evening. There is a lovely log fire place which makes the lounge very cosy. Every time you use the fire Enisa cleans the ashes and relays the fire for the next time. Enisa is the kindest person you could wish to meet and when we left we felt we had made a new very good friend. Thank you Enisa for everything and our really lovely stay.

Nearest food shops are in Sao Roque, 3 minutes by car: very large bakery, supermarket, small fruit market and usual amenities. One of the biggest, well stocked supermarkets is only 5 minutes away by car. It is open until 22:00 pm every day. Other big supermarkets in Funchal and Madeira Shopping Centre are all within 10 - 15 minutes' drive.
