This fully restored (2009) stone farmhouse (1850) is set in a secluded, tranquil, rural location on roads lined by Cognac vines, hardly used except by locals, farmers and daily bread van! Facing south, opposite sunflower fields with tranquil views it is 5mins from the restaurants/shops and amenities of the popular market town of Matha and the D939 close to St Jean D’Angely (A10), Cognac (golf course) & Angouleme. It has oak exposed beams throughout, open fires, with tiled floors & wooden floors upstairs. The house has 3/4 beds,3 bathrooms (1 ensuite), 1/2 reception rooms which includes a large family room (20 x 16) with sofabed (woodburner, plasma TV, table football, DVDs, sky TV), & an adult salon room has open fire, library & wifi, sky TV. It has a well equipped oak/pine kitchen (range, dishwasher, microwave) & a utility room (shower/washing machine), Dining hall has a hand built table for 10-12. It has an established, enclosed garden for children to play on the grass or swim in the 10x4m heated pool with additional covered patio area.
Golfers: Excellent golf course at Cognac with wonderful restaurant and coffee area.
Wine lovers: Hundreds of local producers of wine, pineau, cognac and more - some within walking distance.
Walkers/Hikers: Unlimited opportunities for walking.
We stayed just for a few days as a mini break. The drive down through the channel tunnel and auto route was straight forward and took about 6-7 hours. We didn't push it and took plenty of stops.
On arrival Paul and Cassie were really welcoming and a cool bottle of local wine was soon uncorked.
The house is fabulous, all conveniences you would expect and very cool and classily furnished.
We used the pool, it was drizzling with rain so actually cooler on the poolside than in the heated pool. An added feature is the downstairs shower next to the kitchen so you can clean up after swimming without having to go through the house.
An outside covered and sheltered dining area provided an ideal location to sit and chat.
At night it is very dark and very quiet. You really appreciate that you are in rural France. Not a place for those who want to walk to the nearest nightclub!
We drove into Cognac, sampled some very fine cognac (The clue is in the name). The small producer next to the massive Remy Martin building does a coffee cognac to die for. Cognac town is a pleasure to visit and there are a few restaurants we plan to try on our next stay. We also bought some really drinkable white wine from a local vineyard. There are plenty around.
In all a very clean, really beautiful house set in a rural location. Not too far to drive in a day, we will be visiting again.
This was our 2nd visit to Belvoir Maison. We visited first early July 2012 and enjoyed our time with a group of friends visiting Cognac Blues Festival ( only 20 mins drive). We returned 7th September 2013 for two weeks and enjoyed a very relaxing ( and incredibly sunny) time by the pool with BBQ's late into the night on the terrace. Pinocchios in Matha did a great steak/pizza. Had a wonderful lunch at Scorlion ( St Jean D'Angeley) after wandering around the weekly Wednesday market. Bought some lovely wine at Siecq, enjoyed our cognac tasting visit close by at John Balluet at Neuvicq. The house is very spacious, the extra bathrooms, separate salon/family room make it wonderfully accommodating. A great place to chill out or enjoy with friends.
The house is in a great location, remote and quiet but in easy reach of local towns. Set in a stunning landscape of vineyards and sunflowers this was the perfect holiday location. The house is stunningly equipped and maintained to a extremely high standard. The pool was warm and the outside areas perfect for alfresco dining. A highly recommended property, we will certainly be back. A great family holiday had by all.
What a great place for a relaxing getaway in rural France. We first stayed here in August 2009 and then again in May 2012. Easy drive from La Rochelle airport and handy to Cognac for day tripping, cognac tasting (and a purchase or two to enjoy on the terrace ......!) The house is surrounded by fields so perfect for early morning/evening walks or cycling before breakfast or dinner. The kids loved the pool (as did the grown up kids!) and the house was really well equipped with games, DVDs, books etc to keep everyone entertained. Clean and well maintained, kitchen had everything we needed. BBQ on the terrace which we used a lot. Rooms were spacious, bathrooms great. Contact with owners was first rate. Hoping to visit again!
We stayed here for three weeks in August 2010 and had a fantastic, relaxing break. The owners had been really helpful, including emailing in advance the best set of directions I've ever seen!
The house has been beautifully restored and really is in the middle of nowhere - overlooking fields of sunflowers / maize / vines. Everyone was very kind and helpful, with great suggestions for markets (St Jean d'Angely), canoeing (Jarnac) and reasonably accessible beaches (Royan, via a new road from Saintes). We also rented the owners' bikes and took the children's own with us, meaning we could cycle to the town or to a restaurant in nearby Chagnon.
The pool was fantastic - the perfect temperature for any time of day and the children adored it.
After the good weather, long lunches and breakfast every day out by the pool, the swimming and the bike rides, we returned ready for life in the school term, saying "au revoir" rather than goodbye.
We loved staying in this restored farmhouse, especially having lunch on the terrace beside the swimming pool (nice and clean and well maintained). The house was peaceful and comfortable (especially the beds) and tastefully decorated. It had all the right mod cons, including, besides the upstairs bathroom, a handy shower on the ground floor to rinse off the kids after swimming. The other good thing is two separate living rooms, so adults can have a quiet drink in one while the kids play around in the other (it's got table football). The location is rural and tranquil, and we cycled into Matha, the nearest town, along flat, quiet country roads for ice creams.
In an idyllic rural location with views of countryside and vineyard. House set in a pretty hamlet. `Secluded but Peaceful but close to market town of Matha with amenities. Fantastic cycling and walking along natural tracks and vineyards. Nearby historic town of cognac with golf and museums. St Jean D'Angeley is 15 mins away with great restaurants and shops. Beach and coast less than an hour away at La Rochelle.
