The house of the Skalidis family was built in 1900 in the heyday of the traditional settlement of Gonia. Following recent restoration work it now fully caters for modern household needs, while its architectural style remains unspoiled.
The stone-built house is constructed on two levels. Through the courtyard you enter the ground floor, with a fully equipped open-plan kitchen, a spacious dining and sitting room with TV and fireplace, a bathroom/WC and two bedrooms, one of which has a double bed and en-suite bathroom/WC. Both bedrooms are airconditioned.
From the veranda of the upper level, you access a large airconditioned room that includes a cosy mezzanine area with two beds, and a separate study. Two sofas in the sitting area can also accommodate two people for sleeping. Another bathroom/WC connects with the same space. From the veranda you also enter another bedroom, with A/C, a double bed and en-suite bathroom/WC.
Total bedrooms=4-5, bathroom/WC=4
The house also has a fine garden with a swimming pool under orange trees. A vine pergola is located just in front of the house and belongs to it. Parking space for two cars is available.
Wherever you stand you can enjoy the splendid view, overlooking a broad green valley, the surrounding villages on the foothills, and beyond the peaks of the White Mountains. The house is designed to ensure privacy and peace of mind amid the majestic Cretan scenery.
Gonia is a centrally located village on the island of Crete, 15 min. drive from the beaches of the north coast and 30 min. from the superb beaches of the south coast. Walking through the olive groves will bring you to the surrounding villages, where you can enjoy a cup of coffee or a glass of wine under the mulberry tree among local friendly people. The rural area is ideal for hiking through gorges, olive groves and vineyards. Within a few hundred meters from the house you'll find a supermarket, pharmacy and a traditional tavern, where you can enjoy various dishes of the famous Cretan cuisine, cooked with fresh, locally produced ingredients.
Konstantinos Skalidis is the 4th generation owner of this property. On a professional level, he is a highly experienced accredited lecturer-guide for educational and archaeological tours of Crete and Greece more generally, and has also written on the history and culture of Greece. He supervised the restoration and renovation of the old family home, which means so much to him, respecting its traditional architectural style and endeavouring to preserve its original feel and atmosphere.
Should you be interested, you can arrange with him guided excursions to any sight, museum, i.e.Knossos and the Heraklion museum, he can accompany you to hikes, i.e through the Samaria gorge, or to the summit of Psiloritis(2456m), at reasonable prices.
The Skalidis family home represents the living Cretan tradition. With his long experience in cultural and active tourism, Konstantinos can answer all your questions about Crete and Greece from the distant past to the present day. He can give you the best tips for day-excursions to the fascinating archaeological sites of the island, or to the nearby gorges.
The house "oikos 1900" is over a century old. It is being offered to guests for a certain number of weeks per year. It provides the security level dictated by common sense. We accept no liability for accidents caused by carelessness. Adults accompanying children are responsible for their security in the house, in the garden and around the pool.
Konstantinos can also show you how to cook a variety of Cretan dishes (including vegetarian), as he is proud of his cooking talents!
Thank you very much for making us so welcome at your house, we had a wonderful holiday. Sometimes in the past we have stayed somewhere simply to be able to visit a certain location, but this year the house and your hospitality have been the highlight of our trip to Crete. Thank you for your help and advice, the delicious fresh produce and of course the special gifts you gave us when we left, including your book! The house and garden were absolutely charming and we had everything we needed to be relaxed and comfortable.
We have already told our family and friends, so we will certainly be recommending a stay at 'Oikos 1900
We have stayed in the house for the second time (never done before - identical holiday destinations) and it was well worth it. The hosts are warm and welcoming, the place is in perfect condition with all conceivable amenities. The pool is well looked after and separated from the house and terrace which is a strong plus with little children as you never have to worry who jumps in next by accident...
To us September is a great month to visit Crete, Gonia might not be the hottest spot on the island but if you're seeking quietness, the sea close by (approx. 8 km, easy if you have a car), a tavern you could dine every evening, and if not eating out, a property with large kitchen and space to easily take four parties (as equipped with four separate bathrooms) Oikos1900 is your place.
We might even come back a third time...
Beautiful home - even better than the pictures on the website. Spacious, clean, well equipped. Very friendly, helpful, knowledgeable and generous hosts: knowledgeable suggestions, fresh local fruits and jams, and always available for help. Highly recommended!
We had a really lovely time at the villa. It is spacious, well-equipped and full of character. We had lots of fun in the pool, which is set in a beautiful garden, shaded by orange and pomegranate trees. The villa overlooks the village and the surrounding countryside, and is just a few minutes walk from the village square.
Konstantinos and Fotini were attentive hosts who welcomed us with some much-needed food, wine and raki on our arrival and cooked a delicious Cretan meal for us during our stay. They also gave us plenty of useful advice on places to visit.
Gonia is a pretty village with a friendly bar on the square, where we spent several evenings drinking the local wine. The food at the village Taverna was excellent, and there was also a pretty well-stocked shop in walking distance of the villa. There is also a fantastic butchers and bakers within a five minute drive, as well as several supermarkets within a 10 minute drive. Rethynmon was easy to get to, and the main town beach was really good, but the best beach was about 20 minutes the other way down the coast (Lappei beach). This beach had miles of sand, a fantastic bar/restaurant and great swimming conditions for the kids. Getting to the beaches on the other side of the island took about 45 minutes, and was worth it just for the drive which takes you through the most beautiful countryside.
We spent a wonderful week at the villa, which was even better in person than in the pictures. There were 7 of us in total, and there was plenty of room for all of us. We had lots of room and never did use the extra kitchen upstairs. We made great use of all the amenities, including the courtyard, upper deck with the great views of the valley, and the great pool. All mealtimes were spent outside in the warm sunny weather. Our host offered to cook a celebratory meal, and did a great job. He even presented the birthday girl with a present...a signed book that he wrote about Greece. We even had food in the fridge when we arrived, honey & homemade jams for the week, and fresh vegetables would appear on the table. The property has citrus trees and a pomegranate tree as well. The village where this is located is very handy to the main highway as well as the southern coast. We did day trips in our cars each day, and found it to be very central. The host was very accommodating, spoke great English (as well as other languages), arranged tours for us, and provided maid service half-way through our week-long stay. I would highly recommend this villa for anyone (including my friends and family) wanting an authentic Greek experience on Crete. I hope to return one day & stay here again.
After last year we spent again wonderful days in Gonia. The accommodation was very comfortable and cozy, the hosts as always very warmly. The right place for those who likes real cretan life. And if you want good tips for excursions, ask Mr Skalidis. He knows everything about he wonderful island because he is professionell Tour Guide.

The beautiful old town of Rethymnon , a very well preserved venetian-ottoman town, is only 8 km away. You can not just enjoy a walk through the narrow streets of the town or enjoy swimming; it is also a pleasure being there after sunset. The nightlife promises a variety of experience, from music bars with international repertoire, to modern music concerts, traditional music events and quite a few prominent restaurants.
Since our village is so centrally located, you may visit the towns of Chania or Heraklion very easily; it's an hour's drive. One day excursions will enable you to walk through the Samaria gorge, or numerous other gorges, the owner can give you exact information, you can even hike to tht summit of Psiloritis - 2456m- ,the famous Ida mountain.
Another day's excursion can be a visit to the excavation of Knossos and the museum of Heraklion, to various medieval - byzantine- churches, beautiful renaissance monasteries or countless beaches.
