Superb Country House In A Lovely Country Setting With Pool and Garden
Can Mademon is a stone country house (masia) that has been restored and furnished to live all year round, a very comfortable house. A real home from home with newly installed air conditioning in all upstairs rooms.
Interior floors are all wooden and the installations are all superior quality that one would expect for year round living. All the bedrooms are at least doubles with windows to outside. Downstairs the bedrooms boast stone arch ceilings which means they are lovely and cool in the hot summer months. There are 2 bathrooms, one serving downstairs with a wet room shower installation. The bathroom serving upstairs has a bath and shower.
The huge and well equipped kitchen makes entertaining and food preparation a pleasure, a 5 ringed Bosch Gas large oven and central island, a whirlpool fridge which has an integral water filter and ice maker. Next to the kitchen is the breakfast room with woodburning stove and large farmhouse style table, here Patio doors lead out to a covered terrace a lovely place to eat in the morning or relax. Here you can watch the children in the pool.
Elsewhere on the ground floor there is a utility room with washing machine and dryer and an open dining area with dining table leading through an impressive stone arch to another seating area again with woodburing stove and a double height galley style room. Large glass doors open to yet another covered terrace with comfortable sofas for that essential afternoon siesta!! The of the exterior of the house boasts a kiln oven set in the side of the hill, this historical kiln is listed in a book of architectural interests in the area and is one of only 2 that survive, it is actually the reason the house exists.
The upstairs has a large wooden floor lounge with big comfy sofas, bookshelf, and television with apple tv and a pool table with windows overlooking the foothills of the Pyrenees mountains and the famous Canigo mountain.
Again all the bedrooms are very large and comfortable and if the shutters are kept closed in the daytime, keep cool enough to give a good nights sleep to any guest. The red bedroom is huge and its arched window overlooks the upstairs terrace and swimming pool below. The blue room is at the front and its arch window acts like a frame for the beautiful mountains and fields that are infront of the house. The white room has a door that leads on to the upstairs terrace. The house is set up to be a place that guests can enjoy without ever having to leave (but of course we recommend that you at least try and drag yourselves off to experience the wonderful things Catalunya has to offer!) There are always a selection of videos and books in the library.
The swimming pool is a proper tiled pool and is very large (size) meaning guests can if wish do some serious lengths and work off all those tapas! It has a rustic decking which has just been extended with an outside shower and beautiful shaded area to escape the hot summer sun in between dips and a newly built in bar-b-que area by the kitchen
Apart from swimming for the kids there is a pool table and table tennis and a table football. There is a lovely maintained garden and lawn surrounded by pine forest - they can climb up the small ledge and sit and drink in magnificent views of pyreeness and countryside. Or cross the quiet country road and follow the country paths down to river fluvial (a spot of fishing perhaps?) , If you get up early it is possible to see wild boar looking for roots in the forest, or follow the footpaths which under through miles of unspoilt land with the call of the birds and they many sounds of nature for company.

About Victoria Blair
We are a Spanish English family, I was born in London and after a career in the city moved to this area of Spain to help my uncle who restored country houses and ran a boutique hotel, I love horses and looked after my uncle's who had had several. The riding is spectacular, many times I would be moved to tears by just the sheer beauty of the countryside, the snow capped Canigo mountain, the poppies in spring, sunflowers in summer. One could ride for hours without meeting anything but wild boar, you could ride to the sea and off season gallop along the beach. I just completely fell in love with this part of Spain and stayed. After a while I decided to reignite my career and moved to Barcelona where I met Albert, my husband, Although I had a lot of fun in Barcelona and careerwise it was a very prudent move, it wasn't long before we were looking to buy a property and move back to the countryside to raise children. Joe was born in 2005 and we brought him home to Can Mademon where we really did spend a few idyllic years with our horses and dogs before Albert needed to return to work. In 2008 we married in the garden of Can Mademon by the mayor of the village but in 2011 Albert's job meant he was travelling and when I was pregnant with Lola his job moved to the UK and so it was more practical to live here in the UK (although we came to the horsey Chobham so its nearly countryside!) Can Mademon is so important to us, we didn't want to sell the property and giving other families the opportunity to enjoy this wonderful place would help us keep the house alive, as houses need to be lived in!
Victoria Blair purchased this Chateau / Country House in 2004
Why Victoria Blair chose Esponellà
Location, Location, Location!! We love the countryside and the wild coasts of the costa Brava with all its brilliant restaurants where you can eat fantastically for 10 - 15 euros if you so wish by choosing the daily menu, The BEST restaurant in the world is a short drive away (EL CELLAR DE CAN ROCA), its an area that is relatively untouched, friendly faces, beautiful scenery and quiet although the costa Brava and its may beaches are a short drive, We love Banyoles and the lake and the fantastic sunsets that this area gives. We love nature and this house just encapsulates that, it is so comfortable with lots of different living space, you can choose where to sit according to your mood, it is a beautiful property for all round living. We just fell in love with it from the start and all the beautiful forest and wonderful nature trails surrounding it where I would spend many hours with my dogs and horses. The walk to the river Fluvia is worthy of a special mention, you can watch the most amazing dragon flys go about their short lives and silver fish jumping out of the river. In Summer families splash about in the river and the small village next to the house has a boat race in the summer where local families must make their own craft and sail a portion of the river, afterwards its back to the village for the summer festival where everyone takes food and all sit down to share. The villagers are very welcoming to tourists.
What makes this Chateau / Country House unique
There are so many things that make Can Mademon special, I loved the massive wooden shutters that open in the winter room where we would sit and enjoy a glass of locally produced wine and watch the flames of the wood burner. I love to drink in the view from the arched windows upstairs or take a snooze in the porch listening to the birds sing me to sleep. My family and I would lie on the decking at night looking up into the clear night sky and counting the stairs or marveling at the milky way. There is so little light pollution that star gazing is just a wonderful thing to do and my son would squeel in delight at the many shooting stars! After riding in summer I would jump in the pool to cool off and then rest in the shade of the willow tree. This property is just so easy and has so many interesting spaces.

Lovely house; too many rules
★ ★ ★ ☆ ☆
This is a lovely house although you definitely need a car if staying here. The pool is a great size and we made good use of the pool table too.
Unfortunately, the owner seems excessively house proud and was keen to note that she didn't 'need' to rent the house. We were given, on multiple occasions, a very long list of rules to follow pre-staying and strongly advised to hire a maid to keep the house clean during our two week holiday. We did so but were still docked money for a stain on the bed linen despite paying a large amount of money to stay there. No welcome book either.
In short, a nice house but a reluctant, mean-spirited owner left a sour taste in our mouths. We would never recommend friends to stay there.

This is the first negative feedback this house has received in 5 years of renting and being full all season. And the first time we have ever kept back a small amount of the deposit. Normally bookings come from Can Mademon's own website and/or returning guests. We normally send a PDF file with lots of information but the family said they knew Cataluña well.
It has been an incredibly hot summer and the town hall issued water restrictions and fire warnings. The house does not have a well but is on the town water supply- with a very large heated non chlorine pool and watering system for the maintained garden, reminding guests to be mindful of water use and the elevated risk of fires is what any responsible owner would do. The Masia also has 4 newly installed air conditioning systems that, despite the heatwave keep the house cool and very comfortable but it is important guests know how to use them properly.
A cleaner was offered (as with all guests) at an extra cost (lots of families like to have a complete rest and have someone to clean, wash clothes and iron etc) and a list of rental conditions was sent to be signed before proceeding with the contract - which the family signed. The contract stipulated any specialised cleaning had to be paid for. As I explained it was not the fact of a very large blood stain on the bed, quilt and sheets, it was because no water or product was put immediately on the stains, instead they were allowed to dry out making the mattress impossible to clean and unfortunately the sheets had to be replaced. Guests do not like to sleep on others' stains and bleach had not removed them. All other stains such as the chocolate milk and blue pool chalk stains on the sofas and other bits were not charged for.
As owners it seems we are under more and more pressure to go above and beyond a fair price for great facilities to avoid negative reviews. I am sorry that I can not rent the house at such a great price and absorb all the extra costs incurred and in addition supply free gifts. The family received a discounted price (500£) for the house during this period so I am sorry they felt they had to criticise us because we asked for a contribution replace all the sheets
Fabulous top notch property in a beautiful setting
two families with children ranging from toddlers to teenagers, this property catered for all with enough space to truly chill out. Really well equipped with everything provided, with thoughtful extras in a welcome basket with local delicacies. Very clean and a lovely pool if we just wanted a rest from visiting all of the wonderful nearby locations, including probably one of my favourite beaches ever at St Marti. We found some amazing places to eat and go out but I think our best times were just lounging on the veranda drinking wine, watching the stars and enjoying the wonderful peace of the place. I can't recommend it enough!!
Welcome to Can Mademon, a Catalan masia situated just North of Girona, with easy access to Barcelona, the Costa Brava and France. The house is surrounded by beautiful countryside with superb views to the snow capped Pyrenees, the river Fluvia with its abundance of wildlife is a short stroll away; an absolute must for nature lovers.
Esponella, the nearest village is a short distance away along sunflower lined roads, here you can enjoy a freshly made coffee and eat delicious bread and cakes baked overnight in the bakerys own oven (Forn de Pa) or eat in Can Roca, an important stop of any gastronomy tour of the Pla d'Estany, In fact Masia Can Mademon has several of the restaurants featured in important gastronomy guides in the near vicinity, including El Celler de Can Roca –just named the best restaurant in the world. This is a beautiful part of Catalunya and a trail of BTTs (Official bike routes) easily accessed from the house allow one to drink in and enjoy the sights, smells and tranquility of the beautiful countryside, There is a large variety of supermarkets, local shops, weekly markets, organic shop, cafes, restaurants and bars all within a 10 minute drive of the masia.
The nearest large town is Banyoles, with its glistening olympic lake. The lake is popular amongst locals and tourists alike, the water is very clean and there are several places to swim, with and without lifeguards, there is even a bar where patrons can pay a small fee for the pleasure of taking a cooling dip before or after their fayre, If swimming is not your thing, many bars offer shaded terraces by the side of the lake to read the papers and have a coffee or beer in this wonderful setting. Here it is also possible to rent bikes and traverse the perimeter of the lake for some gentle exercise, highly recommended, indeed several riding centres offer horse riding trails in this area, for an hour or more, tailored to your wishes and abilities, Banyoles also is full of historic churches and small narrow cobbled streets to explore. There there is a weekly market where one can buy all sorts of freshly picked vegetables and products straight from the farmers.
A little further from Can Mademon the possibilites are endless, the Costa Brava has some of the most wild and beautiful beaches in all of Spain, all are easily accesible from the Can Mademon, north of Roses is the national park of the Cap de Creus, full of rocky bays, pine trees and the sparkling meditterean, some only accesible by foot or boat. Here is where the famous restaurant of Ferran Adria, El Bulli (now closed until reopening as a training centre for chefs) stands, Highly recommended is St Marti d' Empúries, miles of golden sand met by the crystal waters of the med and behind just sand dunes, not built up in any way with only the charming stone village of St Marti at its side where there is a selection of very good restaurants, an absolutely stunning setting to dine alfresco. The historically minded can visit the remains of the roman settlement that once stood here, very well preserved and lots to see. The coast line caters for every taste, windsurfers paradise at St Pere Pescador, markets, shops and excellent seafood restaurants in L'Escala, the bustle of L'estartit.
There are many historic towns dotted around that are a must to visit including Beasalu where entering the village along its breathtaking stone bridge with its huge ramparts one is almost transported back in time, the village holds many medieval fairs and festivals that are worth visiting and exploring the village you will find many small shops selling interesting medieval themed items and pottery.
The ancient city of Girona with its magnificent Cathedral is also a short drive, a visit to this historical city is recommended, take a stroll through its beautifully preserved jewish quarter with tiny stone alleyways over hung with wisteria, small independent shops are brimming with hand made and unique items to tempt you. Order a coffee in one of the many cafe lined sqaures and watch life go by. Girona, the capital of the Provence has a bustling nightlife and several nightclubs and bars.
Equidistance in the opposite direction is the city of Figures, famous for all things Salvador Dali. At its centre is the Dali museum where the artist himself was laid to rest, some of his most important works can be found here and it is well worth visiting (it is a very popular attraction so go early or book in advance to avoid queueing, is the second most visited in Catalonia). Figures also holds a wine festival every august to taste and buy the latest wines of the local vineyards and now the new station of the TGV fast train opens connecting the city to Paris and Barcelona. Driving back from Figures to Can Mademon one appreciates why Dali was so attracted to this area, with the beautiful pastry coloured sky and sunflower and poppy fields.
