Villa Eleni - traditional style house with modern amenities and private pool

Bedrooms 2
Space 1,130 sq. ft.
Property type villa
Minimum Stay 7 nights

About the property

Free WiFi., 2 Bedrooms, One En-suite, Bathroom, Private infinity Pool, Sea View

The villa is privately situated along a track at the entrance to the village of Douliana Perfect for a taste of authentic Greek life in a very friendly village, it is also close to several good beaches, one just a short but bumpy 10 minute drive away, or a 20 minute walk downhill. the garden is an oasis, well screened from other properties, and is always colourful, with a variety of fruit trees, palms and one ancient olive. This beautiful old tree is just one of the areas of shade around the house, its leaves fascinating as they change from silver to green in at the gentlest of breezes. The bougainvillea covered pergola at the front of the villa provides a popular al-freso dining experience, with a panoramic view over a pine clad green valley and a distant sea.

Villa Eleni is designed as a traditional Greek home, with a large airy open-plan sitting room with a high wooden beamed ceiling. Two comfortable sofas are arranged round a low coffee table to offer comfortable TV viewing on the flat screen TV (with satellite channels), or relaxed reading of some of the many books that fill our two bookcases.

A WiFi Router is installed with free internet use. A wood-burning open fireplace occupies one corner, a useful supplement to the central heating for cosy evenings at each end of the season. There are two sets of French doors for welcome ventilation in summer, one leading to the balcony overlooking the pine-forested valley, and the other to the garden and a crystalline turquoise infinity pool. Pool dimensions 7 x 4 metres, Depth 1.1 to 2.1 metres. The pool is for the sole use of visitors to the villa and both are cleaned and maintained to a high standard. FREE WiFi!

The kitchen is fully equipped, with an extensive range of cooking utensils, crockery and glasses, good quality appliances and a selection of picnic plates and tumblers for use near the pool to ensure your safety.

Six-seater dining tables both in the kitchen space and on the terrace provide a choice of eating al-fresco or indoors, both with a view of the sea. There is also a mosaic table at the side of the pool with a beautiful panoramic view of the forest down to the sea, and of the swallows visiting the pool for refreshments.

The two double bedrooms are light and airy, one with a king-size bed with a comfortable pocket sprung mattress, an en-suite shower, and French doors leading to the balcony.

The second has comfortable twin beds and a sunny double aspect. Both rooms have plentiful wardrobe and drawer space and a safe.

The sparkling and spacious family bathroom has a full size bath with handles and a glass screened shower. All plumbing is UK standard, so toilet arrangements are not of the Greek bag-and-bin variety.

All linen is changed twice weekly during the service provided by Sarah. She will supply fresh, clean white sheets, bath and hand towels, and blue pool towels.

The extensive roof terrace with marble table is accessible via an outside staircase, and has a spectacular view over the pine trees to the sea. Equipped with marble table, sun umbrellas and sun-beds, this area is ideal for sunbathing, as below the level of the parapet it is not overlooked, except by the birds in the surrounding pines. The gardener may visit briefly,by arrangement. The pool is serviced twice per week.

****The house is ideally suited to visitors with limited mobility. Cars may be parked at the bottom of the drive, from there on everything is on one level with the exception of the roof and the wild terraces.****

Washing machine/ hair-dryer/ portable fan/ air-conditioning in bedrooms/ ironing board and steam iron/ safety deposit boxes/ free Broadband/ Satellite TV/DVD player/ I-Pod speaker deck

Full size Neff oven with ceramic hob/ small dishwasher/ fridge-freezer/ microwave/ filter coffee maker/ cafetière/ toaster/juicer/ small food mixer.Weighing scales for serious cooks!

Oil central heating to radiators in all rooms, solar heating for water and a supplementary water heater for cooler days.

Sun loungers and umbrellas at the pool-side and on the roof terrace/outdoor dining tables.

Blue towels for use by the pool, but not at the beach, and toilet rolls ARE SUPPLIED and silky-soft white cotton sheets are changed twice per week.

A Weber electric outdoor oven is available for barbecues.

The cost of rental is based on four sharing. We do not charge for two and then add a supplementary amount for any visitors above that. Four is also the maximum number of visitors of any age. Extremely young children are not normally encouraged, due to the accessibility of the unfenced pool, and the drop to the terrace below.

The house is on the edge of a friendly, quiet village, and the well planted and tended gardens provide relative seclusion from neighbouring houses. The garden is tended out of season by organic means at the hands of a Greek gardener, so a free supply of oranges, lemons, guava and bay leaves is available in season.

Below the house is a wild garden which is home to Cretan wildlife such as Martens and badgers, the latter being kept from the garden by secure gates. A wander down the terraces is a glimpse of the real Crete, largely untamed and populated by untended olive trees, bay, asphodel, and tiny bee orchids in Spring. The scent of wild thyme wafts around you as you brush past the plants. Quiet and peaceful walks abound around the village, that is until you meet Andreas the shepherd with his flock on his daily expeditions.

The villa is licensed by the Greek Tourist Organisation, as all holiday accommodation should be, by law.

About Elaine

As long-time lovers of Crete, this house was a labour of love, designed and built for us, intended for a retirement home. Personal circumstances prevented this, but Villa Eleni is a much loved, comfortable family home which is visited as often as life permits.

Elaine purchased this villa in 2003

Why Elaine chose Apokoronos

This is very much not a typical holiday let. The furnishings, fittings and equipment, were chosen for quality and elegance, as we would choose for our own home. As many of our visitors have discovered, you will feel that this is your home-from-home in Crete.

What makes this villa unique

Every morning you will wake up to a spectacular view down the valley to the deep azure Cretan Sea. A morning coffee under the pergola gazing at this panorama and listening to the birdsong and the sounds of village life can last all morning. Or all day.You will not feel that this is time wasted, after all, what are holidays for?

A refreshing swim in the pool does not mean that you have to tear yourself away from the view. we intended the pool to make full use of it, even if the pine trees have other plans! At night, if you can brave a midnight swim, you will feel in the words of one of our visitors, that 'At night the pool seems more of an infinity pool than ever'.

Arrival at the villa is, in the right season, a particular delight, as the front porch is clad with beautiful scented jasmine, assaulting the senses as you walk in.

Guestbook comments from the owner

We spend a very nice time in Douliana in your wonderfull house with so many impressiv plants and the pool (I used it every day) with the great view over the trees to the sea. Our recreation was perfect because of the atmosphere of Villa Eleni. Also David's support was very pleasant.

We are very interested to come to Douliana again next year in May or June. I hope it will be possible and it is compatible with our employers an our family.

With best wishes from Cologne

a wonderful holiday in a lovely villa

  • 5 of 5

The villa was lovely ,very comfortable and very well equipped. It was nice to have comfortable beds and a toilet where the paper could be flushed away.

The gardens were lovely lots of mature trees and shrubs and lots of flowers.

David the property manager was close by for any problems that you might have.

The weather was very good for April but the pool was cold . We travelled around the area a lot and enjoyed lovely food in the tavernas . We would not hesitate to return another year

Owner's Response: Another satisfied customer! The pool is cool when the nights are, as it loses any heat it has gained during the day. So early in the season, and in late October, it takes a hardy visitor to spend a lot of time in it. Most of the year it is comfortable, and in high summer very refreshing, popular for moonlight swimming.

Wonderful 'adult' home in tranquil village

  • 5 of 5

We say 'adult' in the same sense as the owners, so to say not kids!! The nearness of the deepish pool and the drop down to the wilderness underneath makes it better for bigger people! The house is very well equipped - the only things we didn't find were clingfilm and foil, but we were maybe looking in the wrong place. Apart from that, everything was at our fingertips. There were neighbours but not in our view (or us in theirs) so our only privacy breakers were the cats! And they were perfectly polite and friendly......... The garden is beautiful and well-tended and has fresh oranges and lemons and lots of rosemary. I only wish we could grow bougainvillea where we live - such an exhibitionist of a plant!!

The village is as lovely as we remembered it from about 10 years ago. There has been some development with EU grant money but it hasn't spoiled the place, just introduced some pedestrianised paving. The Taverna serves great food and the Kafenion is good for people watching. Don't believe the signs to the up-market restaurant which died within 4 months - you can still get a meal for less than 20 euros pp with raki and desserts for free.

Owner's Response: It is nice to know that our twice yearly attacks on the garden and the house are appreciated. It makes the hard work worthwhile. I am glad that the cats were not a nuisance, so many visitors enjoy their company. It is true that we do not supply foil etc. but extras not always included in private villas such as dishwasher sundries are, along with unlimited broadband and central heating, and toilet rolls which are even now not considered an essential by some villa owners. The point about children is certainly relevant, especially those under ten, who should be well supervised, as we point out in our villa information and website. Having said that, we have had a large number of young visitors, all of whom have survived and returned home in one piece including one or two toddlers. Sensible parents are a must.

Fabulous. Just fabulous.

  • 5 of 5

Firstly the communication with the owner Elaine was excellent. She advised and reassured us regarding access issues for one of us with mobility issues which proved to be no problem for us, obviously check out your own issues if this is a consideration for you - but Elaine will give you sound honest advice. She also went as far as speaking to the cook at the local taverna to ensure she was forewarned about our strict vege diet, although in actual fact eating out in Crete wasn't an issue.

The villa itself is lovely. Well maintained and equipped being very spacious for four people. A comfortable lounge with heating and a fire so if like us you go out of season, so you can be warm and cosy once that sun goes down. There are a number of different places to sit outside including a good sized table which made for a very pleasant breakfast; sun umbrellas around the pool with comfy loungers, somewhat distant views to the sea but over lovely tree tops, all located in a quiet area where I don't recall hearing a car all week but I certainly heard lots of bird life. The location on the edge of a small pretty village means you can stroll in 5 minutes or so to the local taverna and after the red wine, raki and good food we were happy to have that walk back. There is a shop of sorts in the village but I quite enjoyed driving to the nearby village to buy bread, oranges whatever in a morning.

There is plenty to see in the area and whilst we had very enjoyable days out in Rethymnon, at the fascinating ruins of Aptera and (the very lovely) Chania, as the week progressed we found ourselves staying closer and closer to the local area and relaxing at the villa. Perhaps we'll explore more upon our return one day?

Future holiday rentals will be measured against Villa Eleni and Crete for us.

Owner's Response: It was interesting for us to explore the local area for suitable vegan food, and useful in that we will be able to offer advice to future visitors on the subject.Greece is well known for vegetarian meals, but lesser so for vegan. We will be trying out some of the recipes I discovered -a bonus. It is good to hear that Anna at the Douliana taverna was helpful, as expected. A very touching review, thank you Nigel.

A get-away with peace tranquility & comfort

  • 5 of 5

The villa is beautiful & well equipped. It is also well serviced. The maid and gardener turn up when they are supposed-to, and do a really thorough job. We had one issue & the property manager answered the phone straight away & came round within the hour to sort everything out. All are nice friendly people.

The pool is a good size & depth, & there is enough space to position loungers for sun or shade as you wish at any time of day. It is still just possible to see the sea from the edge of the infinity pool, but the trees growing down-slope have obscured the view a little compared to the picture-postcard - a pity.

The pool is screened by lovely shrubs & trees providing a good degree of privacy. There is a lot of space outside, with the pool area, veranda & roof-terrace, so its easy to either be sociable or get a bit of quiet-time as you wish.

The village seems to have been badly hit by the recession. Of the two taverna's in the village one was closed throughout our fortnight there. Messages on a blackboard often announced it's re-opening, but it didn't happen. The other one, on the opposite side of the village to the villa, was fine with good food at reasonable prices and friendly staff.

The village has clearly been extended in recent years, but most of the properties in the new area were empty when we were there, giving it a 'ghost-town' feel. Not necessarily unpleasant, but 'vibrant' it isn't. Similarly, the only shop in the place, in the 'Natalia's Houses' complex, was mostly shut, and when we did catch it open it had a very limited selection. However the lady there was extremely nice and helpful.

You're going to need a car to bring supplies back from Kalyves, which has enough shops & taverna's to supply anything a holidaymaker is likely to want, and the drive there & back isn't too bad once you've got used to the two hairpin bends. One tip: don't drive through Kalyves itself. The streets are narrow & busy. Instead when you get to the T-junction with the main coastal road head through a gap in the wall opposite onto a rough beachside car-park & walk from there. Kalyves is small enough to get around on foot.

On cars, be careful how long it is. We had a Volvo S60 and it was a pain to get in and out of the gates. Shorter = better!

Finally, I come to Oliver the resident cat. He's old but a real charmer, and kept well fed he keeps the many other cats away. A win-win for him and us.

We'd definitely like to come again some day.

Owner's Response: This review is objective and helpful. The village is quiet, which is part of the charm of staying in a rural area. The nearest taverna changed hands only last winter, and as there were only two staff, it clearly suffered from its popularity at the height of the season. New tenants may be some weeks in taking over. The mini market is exactly that, and is really only useful for essential items at short notice. Vasso, the owner will make every effort to obtain such items as eggs or bread that are needed regularly, but as with most Greeks, you may not find her in the shop or bar in the afternoon. Siestas are sacred! The new development at the far end of the village is often deserted, but it has a charming atmosphere and is well designed and laid out, and rather reminiscent of Portmeirion, in a Greek incarnation. The properties were designed for sale, but under present conditions they are unlikely to do so for the foreseeable future. Yes, a small or medium sized car is definitely a good idea. Especially so after partaking of the generous free tsikoudia always offered after a meal out.

Tranquil beauty

  • 5 of 5

We stayed there for a week with our adult daughter and were absolutely delighted with our choice. The villa is a true home-from-home, the best equipped we've stayed in, and with top drawer fittings and furnishings, making for a very comfortable stay. The pool area is private, with beautiful views. We really enjoyed being so close to some of the lovely beaches close by, most of which had really excellent and well priced tavernas for lazy lunches. Villa Eleni is definitely a villa we highly recommend, and would be very happy to return to in future.

Douliana is a gem. Still a traditional ancient Cretan village, it is reliant on sheep and olive farming for its main sources of income, it is quiet and friendly. A handful of rental villas add a mix of nationalities to the diners at “Ta Douliana”, a family-run taverna with a cool, tree shaded courtyard which attracts many Greek families from the surrounding area at weekends. The villa is an ideal location for walks in the wooded countryside and as a base for touring the western part of Crete.

The kafeneion, in the tiny village square, is well used by the villagers and is an ideal place for people watching with a Greek coffee or a glass of raki, or tsipouro as the Cretans call it.

A small mini-market and bar at Natalia’s Houses is run by the charming and helpful Vasso Lourakis and her daughter Natalia, who speak perfect English. A second taverna next to Natalia’s Houses has an amazing view over the valley up to the White Mountains from the terrace and excellent, reasonably priced Greek dishes..All are within easy walking distance of the villa. At nearby Vamos there is a traditional village bakery, bank, coffee shop with delicious cakes and several tavernas, as well as a 24hour medical centre. In Kalives at 3km, and Almyrida there are small supermarkets, several tavernas and a choice of beaches. The nearby village of Gavalohori has an interesting small folk museum and a lace-making cooperative.

The area is a nature lovers paradise, especially in Spring when the fields and lanes are a riot of wild flowers, and the nearby beaches are only minutes away by car. Archaeological sites abound in Crete, with one of the most interesting - Ancient Aptera - a short distance away. This site is still being slowly excavated, the latest discovery being a well-preserved Roman amphitheatre. More famous sites , including a newly opened museum at Eleftherna,

and Heraklion museum are feasible in a day. For other activities, there is a water park, Botanical Garden, and two lakes within easy reach, as is the city of Chania with its Venetian harbour, elegant Neo-classical houses, and fascinating alleys. Water sports such as sailing, windsurfing, and snorkelling can be arranged, as can day trips on a variety of boats or yachts from Chania.
