Charming Farm Cottage Nr Oxford - Special Spring offers!

Bedrooms 2
Space 1,162 sq. ft.
Property type cottage
Minimum Stay 3 nights

About the property

2 Bedrooms, Great Views Over Farmland, Only One And A Half Hours From London

THE OLD STABLES is a converted cottage on a farm outside Witney, near Oxford. The cottage is an ideal country bolt-hole from which to tour the region or simply relax and unwind. It enjoys an elevated position with views over farmland and surrounding fields running down to the River Windrush and Witney beyond.

The cottage has its own south facing garden and terrace with the same glorious views. A few horses and sheep graze the fields.

Inside the cottage, there are two good size bedrooms along with a very well equipped kitchen with all modern conveniences including dishwasher and washer/dryer. The kitchen table seats four - or, if extended, up to six. The two double bedrooms upstairs, one with a king size double and one with twin beds, both have excellent views over the surrounding countryside. Both rooms are bright and airy with skylights as well as windows and nicely fitted out. The bathroom has a bath with shower above, stone tiled walls and floors. Inside the sitting room is seating in front of a wood burning stove. There is a large flat screen TV, DVD player and music centre as well as a Wi-Fi connection. The sitting room has large French doors on to the patio with table and chairs, shaded by a parasol, and a small enclosed garden beyond. We have a cot and high chair available on request. There is plenty of secure, off-road, parking.

There are a number of appealing elements including the wood burner and the wooden / tiled flooring throughout, which give it a cool, contemporary feel. A warm and welcoming holiday home perfect for two, ideal for four.

In the fields beyond the garden horses graze and hay is mown. It is an idyllic English rural spot but close to the lovely town of Witney and only 13 miles from the university town of Oxford, city of dreaming spires and home of Oxford University - the oldest university in the English-speaking world.

Closer to home is Blenheim Palace, a world heritage site and birthplace of Sir Winston Churchill. A visit to the house or walk in the grounds is highly recommended.

Talking of walking, there are many fabulous walks very close to the farm. The closest, River Windrush Walk, takes you to the picturesque ruins of Minster Lovell and Dovecot, once home to Richard III's henchman, Richard Lovell. In the pretty mediaeval village, take time to visit the Old Swan pub for a drink or a meal.

Indeed, you are never more than a couple of miles from a historic Cotswold pub. Another circular walk takes you to the village of Swinbrook where you should call in at the Swan Inn, the gastro pub decorated with pictures of the extraordinary Mitford family, who were major figures in the political, literary and social scenes for much of the 20th century and lived in Swinbrook House in the early 1930's.

The pretty touristic village of Burford is only 5 miles away and on the way to the pretty Thames-side town of Lechlade you can visit Cotswold Wildlife Park and Gardens.

In fact there is so much to see and do that the only way to find out is to come and stay!

Lovely cottage ideally situated for Blenheim

  • 5 of 5

Clean, tidy and welcoming, more space than is apparent in the pictures. Well appointed with comfy beds, garden neat and barbecue very useful! Easy to get to Blenheim and Oxford. Witney is very close and had lots of shopping and dining; will have to go back for more!

Lovely cottage, nicely appointed

  • 4 of 5

I was looking for a cottage in this area that was dog friendly. This was ideal for me. Nice little secure garden, easy to wipe floors downstairs and up. Kitchen is nicely appointed. It was the perfect location for me and I will be back later in the year. The owner was helpful and welcoming. Can certainly recommend it.

Owner's Response: Thank you for letting me know that everything worked out fine, Lorna. As I mentioned to you, we have not had dogs staying in the cottage before, so yours was the guinea-pig... So glad it all went well and you were happy with the cottage and the facilities. We would love to welcome you back again! HOWEVER, DESPITE THE SUCCESS OF YOUR STAY AND NOTHING AT ALL TO CRITISIZE YOUR LOVELY DOG, WE HAVE NOW DECIDED NOT TO TAKE PETS ANYMORE. THE REASON FOR THIS IS THAT ONE FAMILY MEMBER WHO USES THE COTTAGE FROM TIME TO TIME IS SADLY ALLERGIC TO ALL PETS AND WE CAN'T TAKE THE RISK. SO SORRY.

Fanatastic Cottage, Home from Home.

  • 5 of 5

Arriving at the cottage the warming glow of golden Cotswold stone welcomes you from its position nestled into the grounds of an idylic farmhouse garden setting. Beyond each dry stone the fields and rises of the Windrush valley stretch out into the distance with the roof tops of Witney crowning the horizon. Once inside, the generous hallway leads to a country kitchen as quaint as a bero advert with room for all to gather and chat. It was the week before Christmas and the cottage was dressed for the occasion with trimmings and lights and a fantasic Christmas tree taking centre stage in the cosy lounge. With the log burner adding much to the festive glow the late winter afternoons could be viewed from a position of complete comfort through the large French windows and beyond the small private walled garden. Two large double bedrooms offer space, ample storage and very comfortable double and twin bedded options. The downstairs bathroom gave ample hot bath and shower options with plenty of good sized towels. Televisision, radio and WiFi made facilities filled in the gaps between games of scrabble and cards. My daily run took me quickly onto quite country lanes and the surounding countryside. For the less active, a short brisk walk down the hill does lead you to the bright lights of Witney and the delights within. Witney is a pretty, much improved Market town with an array of excelent pubs and shops ranging from the mainstream to the individual. The Old Stables is an excellent choice, well maintained by a caring owner, offering perfect family country living for weekends away or the complete holiday. A chocolate cake to greet our arrival was a really nice touch and made for great start to our stay. We will definately make the Old Stables a regular feature of our visits to the UK and will spread the word amoungst all of our friends.

Perfect Cotswolds getaway

  • 5 of 5

We spent a most delightful four nights in the cottage. I have rented several homes, three this year alone, & have never felt quite so at home in a rental. Everything was so comfortable: a big, fully equipped kitchen; the living room with it's beautiful views; two well appointed bedrooms above, with delightful skylights in both. Having a bathroom downstairs was not ideal but it did not detract from our stay at all. The manager was available & always helpful, all in all a most perfect stay. Ideal country location too!

Beautifully converted country cottage

  • 5 of 5

We stayed in The Old Stables over the October half term. The cottage was warm and welcoming when we arrived after dark on a chilly night! Having such a beautiful 'home from home' was a real treat ... the layout, the space and the lovely simple decor made it feel relaxing, and so many little thoughtful touches showed how much care has been taken in putting it together. We found absolutely everything we needed, the kitchen is equipped with a dishwasher and plenty of crockery / utensils, there's a woodburner to keep winter visitors cosy (we didn't use it, just admired it - we never actually felt cold enough!).

We all appreciated the restful atmosphere. The view from the sitting room & garden is lovely, just green fields into the distance. For us, the location was perfect, with so many beautiful towns and villages in easy travelling distance.

One of the nicest places we have stayed ... I'd recommend for families or groups of friends ... locally Huffkins is a 'must-visit' in Witney as the food is scrumptious! And we were surprised to find a cinema in Witney, because it has the feel of an old Cotswold town - but we enjoyed a trip there one evening. There's plenty to see and do nearby.

Perfect break in lovely cottage

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I stayed in the cottage for a long weekend with some friends of ours - there were four of us. It is a lovely location with stunning views over the watermeadows outside Witney. Its a great rural location but close to Witney and some great local pubs (with very good food) that we didnt feel isolated.

The cottage is in great condition - guessing its been done up recently. The kitchen and living rooms were big enough for the four of us, although the kitchen was lacking a few useful cooking utensils, but we mostly ate out and could easily manage with what there was. It wasnt warm enough for a bbq but there was one in the garden - perfect in the summer for a bbq and sundowners!

the property was very clean and well maintained and the lady who owns it was very helpful with helping out with questions we had about the property in advance.

I would definitely recommend this cottage for a family break or, like us, for a couple of couples. Recommend The Lamb and Swan pubs locally too - great food and lovely settings, especially the Lamb.

The Lamb, Crawley
Car: recommended

The Old Stables is on a small country road, half way between Witney and the little village of Crawley. It is out in the country, on a working farm, but within only a mile and a half of the thriving town of Witney, with its many amenities - and free parking! The house sits in the grounds of a larger house and has no other close neighbours. It's at the top of a hill and overlooks the beautiful Windrush Valley with a view in the distance of Witney itself - an idyllic setting.

We're only 8 miles from Blenheim Palace in one direction and the pretty tourist village of Burford in the other, and only 14 miles from the University city of Oxford.
