Lombardy - Lkae Como Area:
The Italian Lakes are a little slice of paradise. Elegant ribbons of blue water stretch out ahead, folded into the sun-baked foothills, with a spectacular back drop of the snow-capped Alps.
Lake Como offers hidden treasures just waiting for the visitor to discover them: charming corners forgotten by time, lakeside villages where nothing seems to have changed for centuries.
It is steeped in history with an immense collection of churches, architectural masterpieces and works of art covering the centuries. The lake is situated in a basin surrounded by wooded mountains, and offers an extremely varied landscape, with its' shores featuring a succession of pastures, and woods as well as harsh and impressive rock formations.
All this alongside elegant, lakeside villas with sub-tropical gardens, which provide a haven of peace and tranquillity and chic resorts such as Varenna, Bellagio, Menaggio and Como itself.
Warming, in spriing and graced with natural beauty, the lakes are still a place to draw breath and wonder. Lake Como, oriented north-south, ringed by characterful old villages often wedged onto narrow beaches between rugged cliffs and water. Those classic lake images of flower strewn balconies, Baroque gardens and splendid waterside villas can be found here in abundance. Dotted around and between the lakes are some of Italy's finest art cities, such as Milan, Verona & Bergamo.
The most romantic and picturesque villages on the lake are Santa Maria Rezzonico, Varenna (15 min by ferry) & Bellagio (8 min by ferry), Lenno (visit Villa Balbianello, location for 007's Casino Royale as well as Villa Gaeta, right here in Menaggio) & Laglio (where George Clooney owns Villa Oleandra).
We are back home now in Florida and talking to friends about our fabulous vacation in Menaggio on Lake Como. Everything was perfect, from our arrival at your office to transport to Bellavista de Lago and the spectacular views from this apartment. What a wonderful vacation getaway. The location is within easy walking distance to the ferry, the town center and many great restaurants. The apartment had everything we needed from wifi to a washer and dryer. Breakfast on the terrace was a perfect start to a day of touring. Your staff gave us many great places to visit. Villa Carlotta and Villa Balbiano were breathtaking. Of course, ferry rides to Bellagio and Varenna were a must. Two highlights were the market in Leno and the festival in Tremezzo. They transported us to three small towns for lunch. At each stop we ate a different course and had a chance to meet and talk with the locals.
What really made this vacation great was the personal support from your staff. Viviana Pianarosa was wonderful. From places to see, to restaurants to transportation she was always there to help. Everyone we met with was so professional and accommodating. As soon as I upload my photos I will send the best to you. As a trip advisor reviewer, you can be assured I will have great comments about Happy Holiday Homes and Bellavista de Lago. We will be back.
We booked this apartment for our yearly holiday. Apartment ok. Clean and in a good position with lake views. Its about a ten minute walk into Menaggio. The walk is downhill but is quite a steep uphill walk back.
The aprtment was well equipped although needs updating and there were a few things which needed to be maintained. Needs a paint outside. Also be advised that the apartment is situated in a residential complex. There is a shared pool. The residents there did not seem happy when the pool was being used. I particulary picked this apartment as it had a pool but we were all made to feel uncomfortable so had to go to the lido. Communication with the Owner was not good.
The appartment is very well equipped, spacious, has lots of cupboard space which was great as we stayed 3 weeks and had a lot of stuff. The furniture is tasteful and there is enough cutlery for 8. Happy holiday homes that manages the appartment is a professional company that helps efficiently in case of problems and that is actively planning excursions and giving good tipps (dining with children...).
However, not all services are up to the high standard that the company strives to give. The cleaning company is not up to much. We had a sticky bathroom cupboard and lots of dust under the bed. Also, the toilet flush in one of the bathrooms did not work when we arrived. How can you NOT notice this when you clean a bathroom? HHH sent someone the next day to fix this and some other plumbing problems.
The dishwasher had no salt and someone had put salt into the space for the rinsing liquid. Again - this should be checked by the cleaners.
We cooked a lot and it was a bit challenging as the largest pot was barely large enough to cook 500 g of spaghetti, but not more.
The condominium is in a complex of around 30 appartments that share a swimming pool. The pool is large enough to swim and was rarely crowded, even in August.
The view is gorgeous and the terrace is large enough to have meals outside - if the heat allows it.
The area is very scenic and there are lots of things to do and places to visit. We went to Como by boat twice, to Milan by ferry to Varenna and continued by train (beware - you have to buy the tickets in the tourist information in Varenna, no ticket sale at the station), and of course we took the ferry to Varenna and Bellagio and visited some villas.
Unfortunately, the restaurant in the Lido di Menaggio closed while we were there (legal problems) and the local authorities only managed to get a kiosk to operate that sold panini and ice cream. Apart from that, the lido is very nice.
HHH has multilingual friendly staff. With some more attention to detail this could be a five star place, the potential is there.
Further Sport & Adventure Activities: Bike Rentals, Boat Rentals/Charters, Canoeing/Kayaking, Float Plane/Helicopter, Funicular Railway, Park, Public Transportation, Public Villas & Gardens and Rowing Boats.
From the property guests are just moments away from the town centre of Menaggio, with its wide variety of shops, delicatessens, supermarkets, boutique shops and café-lined piazzas which lead to authentic restaurants and beautiful lakeside walks. The town’s Lido features a fabulous sandy beach perfect for sunbathing and also offers many child-friendly facilities including a child-friendly paddling pool, volley ball court, a family-friendly pizzeria, beach huts and a children’s play area. Mini golf, power boat hire, kayaking, quad bike tours and a mini Go-kart track can also be enjoyed along the lakefront of Menaggio.
The lush hillside above the beautiful resort town also provides a tennis court and nature reserve park in Lenno as well as the famous Menaggio & Cadenabbia Golf Club. Water sports, horse riding, hiking, cycling and extreme outdoor sports are also to be enjoyed in the surrounding area.
Menaggio boasts a frequent Bus and car and passenger Ferry service, making it within easy reach of the central lake attractions of Varenna, Bellagio, Villa Carlotta and Villa Balbianello.
The main Menaggio road also conveniently leads to Lake Lugano in 25 minutes and also the cosmopolitan lake capital of Como in 50 minutes.
There are Golf clubs around Lake Como: The Menaggio & Cadenabbia Golf Club is Italy's oldest golf course. Established in 1907 with 18 holes Par 70, it is located above Menaggio near Croce, in Grandola ed Uniti, approx. 20 min. by car. Tel: +39 344 321 03. Green Fees: Weekdays €55, Weekends and Holidays €70 Euros; Golf Cart Rental €36.
Restaurant Golf at the club serves fantastic food and is well recommended.. Guests are always welcome, please call beforehand to check course rules. Golf Club Menaggio: (Menaggio Como).
This beautiful lake region of Italy is not the best for skiing as you may imagine, despite its scenery, crisp air and near perfect visibilty and mountains capped in winter snow. It does however have Skiing opportunities at local resorts for a day out.
There is a small ski area on Mt. Lema, not more than 10 km from Lugano, but you have to be lucky to have enough snow for skiing. In Ticino, the local Swiss Canton, the best places to ski are probably either San Bernardino (south of the pass of the same name) or Airolo (south of Gotthard pass). Both are reachable in about 1 hour by car across the Swiss border.
There are direct trains to Airolo as well from Lugano and hence from Italian Stations. To S. Bernardino there is only a bus connection. For more snow try Andermatt (on the north side of Gotthard pass) which has normally good snow conditions and a good choice of runs.
The closest major ski resorts are St. Moritz and Madesimo toward the Splugen Pass which is approx.100km.
