this lovely 15th century cottage is steeped in character with exposed beams in every room, inglenook fireplaces, lead-light windows, bread oven, and old brick floors. The cottage garden is typically English, warm, secluded and quiet.

There are 4 large bedrooms (2 double, 2 twin connected if required) with linen and towels provided, three bathrooms, sitting room with baby grand piano, dining room, fully fitted kitchen/breakfast room, laundry room, central heating, dishwasher, freezer, washing machine and dryer. Kersey is in Constable and Gainsborough country. Visit Flatford Mill where Constable painted The Haywain, and see a superb collection of Gainsborough’s work in Sudbury in the house where he was born. The Suffolk coast offers places too numerous to mention, but Aldeburgh and Southwold are worth exploring. Sutton Hoo reveals an ancient Saxon burial site, Lavenham (Guildhall and antique shops), Long Melford (Kentwell Hall and more antique shops), and Colchester (Roman remains) are worth visiting. Kersey is a walkers’ paradise with several country pubs within walking distance and the village pub only 200 yards away. A beauty therapist can visit the house, and there are 4 golf courses nearby. Old Drift House is a lovely home from which to explore all of this, or to just stay put and relax in quiet and splendid comfort.

Why Euan and Jill Black chose Suffolk

Old Drift House has been created as a home-from-home. Quality furniture, fixtures and fittings, together with homely soft furnishings, a comprehensively equipped kitchen, and an assortment of home entertainment, help create just the right atmosphere.

What makes this cottage unique

The 4 double bedrooms that sleep 8 people provide ideal accommodation for grandparents, families or friends to get together to experience a house that will remind them of a bygone era. Sensitively updated to modern standards, it would be difficult to find an older inhabited house anywhere in England. Although the well at the back door is still in working order, the old loos at the bottom of the garden are not. There is something rather special about staying in a house that was probably built before Richard 111 was on the throne or before the Princes were murdered in the Tower. A house without foundations that has leaned this way and that for over 500 years. But apart from the character of the house, there is so much to see and explore nearby, and it is only 90 minutes from central London, and less than 2 hours from the airports of Heathrow and Gatwick.

Old Drift House is a luxury thatched cottage built in the late 1400s and located in the medieval village of Kersey, once described by journalists as possibly the prettiest village in England. Thriving on the wool trade of that era, the village was in decline by the late 1500s only to emerge unscathed and largely unchanged centuries later with the rise and wealth of the Industrial Revolution. It is therefore a genuinely ancient village with its timber-framed houses, old medieval church, and ancient ford right by the pub. Very little traffic passes through the village, and one can wander the streets and surrounding countryside in safety, peace and quiet. It is the quintessential English village,

located in the most lovely part of South Suffolk, with footpaths and narrow, winding country lanes that are ideal for walking or cycling, just ambling from pub to pub, or sampling one of the dozen or so really good restaurants that lie within 5 miles.

Nearby is Lavenham, another medieval town from the same era, Long Melford with several antique shops and 2 Tudor Mansions open to visitors (Kentwell Hall and Melford Hall), and Sudbury and Bury St Edmunds each with their own unique atmosphere. The artist John Constable lived at Dedham Vale where his house and works at Flatford Mill are on view, and the coastal towns of Felixstowe, Aldeburgh and Southwold are well worth exploring.

For the more adventurous there is Colchester Zoo, Beth Chatto's famous gardens, Bewilderwood treehouse adventure park, Bressingham steam museum, Jimmy's Rare Breed Farm, Newmarket Racecourse, Castles at Orford, Framlingham and Colchester, Stonham Barns Owl Sanctuary, South Suffolk Heritage Coast (Dunwich, Southwold, Aldeburgh), Sutton Hoo Anglo-Saxon Burial Site, West Stow Anglo-Saxon Village, and Cambridge with its famous university, all within a day's adventure.
