Description

Photos and Description of this 5 bedroom holiday villa in Civitella d'Agliano - The Yellow House

Self-catering rental, ideal for families and exploring Lazio, Umbria &Tuscany

The Yellow House is a haven of peace and tranquillity in the heart of rural Italy, it is secluded, hidden in a valley and surrounded by mature trees and beautiful views. The villa itself is elegant and comfortable and perfect for self-catering holidays for family groups. Happy days can be spent enjoying the large private pool, exploring the 10 acres of land and fishing in the stream. For those who want to explore the area there is much to see including Lake Bolsena where you can swim, water ski, jet ski, explore the lake on pedelos and visit the beautiful island of Bisentina by boat. The city of Orvieto is only 40 minutes away and a visit will keep shoppers, historians and gastronomes happy all day long. Nearer home is the fascinating 'dying city' of Civita di Bagnoregio, a tiny town perched on the top of what remains of a an earthquake 300 years ago, and offers spectacular panoramic views.

Surrounding landscape: The large private swimming pool (5m x 15m) is situated on the side of a hill and below is the winding valley. The pool is secluded and peaceful. Around the perimeter of the pool is a mature rosemary bush providing a beautiful perfume in the evenings and fresh herbs for cooking. The marble patio is spacious with plenty of room for the 8 sunloungers. In the garden there are 3 large garden tables and outside seating for 20 people. There is a lantern in the oak tree which provides the perfect light for intimate suppers or large parties in the evening. There is a large pizza oven which is great fun to use for cooking pizzas, joints of meat etc. The garden is informal. and the area around the house has space to park several cars. There are plenty of places to explore on the land including 3 small caves and a stream at the end of the bottom field from where it is possible to fish for trout. We have one neighbour but neither of the houses are overlooked.

Eating and drinking : There are a wide variety of very good restaurants within driving distance of Civitella D'Agliano which cater for all needs including families. For specific details visit our website: Please contact us for the web site address. There are many local wines but the best known is the organic wine made by Sergio Mottura and his family who own the beautiful hotel La Tana dell'Istrice. If you are interested you may like to spend an evening with the Mottura family and their guests tasting wine, visiting the impressive wine cellars and finishing off with a delicious meal in their restaurant.

Cookery demonstrations. Learn how to make traditional dishes prepared in The Yellow House kitchen by a local chef. Guests can be involved in the preparation or just watch the experts at work. Enjoy the fruits of your labour accompanied by regional wines. The selection of dishes will vary depending on the best ingredients available. Contact Cristina for details of choices and price.

Things to do and see: If you enjoy shopping for local produce you may want to visit the markets, these are a typical feature of the local areas, the size of the markets vary depending on the town's importance. The markets usually start at 8am and finish at 1pm. On Monday there is a market in Bagnoregio, Tuesday in Bolsena Thursday and Saturday in Orvieto and a small market on Friday in Civitella d'Agliano. For those of you who enjoy golf 'La Querce' Golf Club is approximately 40 minutes drive away just south of Viterbo - 18 hole, par 72, 64262 meters. And those that ski -Mount Amiata is 60km from the house in Tuscany on the way to Siena (approximately a one hour drive). Although not on the door step it is possible to visit the resorts for day trips. There is good skiing at Prato della Contessa, Prato della Macinaie, Marsiliana and Cantore. Slopes are suitable for beginners and advanced skiers. For excellent local info 'Bolsena, Everything You Need to Know' by Fleur Kinson -

About e-mail - Emma de Souza (England), phone - Cristina Casian (Italy)

We live in Hertfordshire and have a teenage daughter.

We bought The Yellow House in 2002 and have always loved Italy, buildings and restoration. Some Italian friends have a property near Bolsena and after visiting the area we were struck by how unspoilt and beautiful it was.

e-mail - Emma de Souza (England), phone - Cristina Casian (Italy) purchased this villa in 2002

Why e-mail - Emma de Souza (England), phone - Cristina Casian (Italy) chose Viterbo Province

Initially we looked at properties near Bolsena but could not find anything with enough seclusion or land. We broadened our search and came across several possibilities, The Yellow House was our favourite.

At the time the house was a ruin and we spent 2 years on the restoration. The project was great fun and we had lots of support from our now property manager, Kalle.

Parts of The Yellow House were renovated again in 2010. The main change is the kitchen which has been extended to form a much larger kitchen dining area with modern professional kitchen (30ft x 12ft).

What makes this villa unique

Secluded spot, beautiful views of valley, local area unspoilt by tourism. Very close to local shops, restaurants and medieval village. Large private swimming pool. Outside pizza oven. Perfect base to explore Lazio, Umbria and Tuscany. Wine tasting and catered events including cooking demonstrations. Private fly fishing instruction for all levels of experience.

Guestbook comments from the owner

Dear Emma, Just to say what a lovely time we all had at the Yellow House from 26/7 to 2/8. It met all our hopes and expectations and we had such fun with the pool, the outside terrace, the games (scrabble and monopoly were favourites) and we played a very successful game of 'Sardines' - If you don't know it, it involves one hiding and the rest searching until the last one finds the hiding place where everyone else is holding their breath! The house affords many good hiding places! Kalle and the cooks who came in did us proud and for the rest we enjoyed the local produce home cooked. Lovely place. I'm sure you are so happy when there. Best wishes

Outstanding - can't wait to return!

  • 5 of 5

The yellow House exceeded our expectations in almost every respect.

The house itself is lovely with a fantastic kitchen, comfortable beds and a great sense of style. The outside space is equally fabulous with a large pool, plenty of loungers and an abundance of games and inflatables.

The house and pool were so lovely that we didn't explore an much as we'd planned, but we did manage trips to Bolsena and Capodimonte for swimming, and to Civita di Bagnoregio and Montefiescone for evening walks.

The pizza oven was an added bonus; due to gluten intolerance in 2 of our party we opted to make our own dough (we were able to source the ingredients easily from the local supermarket and the one in Bagnoregio) which worked surprisingly well.

One earlier review had commented on the access road to the house, and I should just say that we found the unfinished track to be no problem at all in a standard estate car.

To sum up, we had a fantastic week at the Yellow House and hope to return for a longer break soon... Thank you :)

Fabulous property, just magical!

  • 5 of 5

What can I say, words cannot describe how lovely this house is! We were a group of 12, aged between 12 and 74 and each one of us enjoyed our stay here. The space is really good for a big group, plenty of bathrooms for everyone and large seating areas both inside and out. The table outside under the tree is just a magical place to sit and enjoy meals overlooking the fields down to the river. Unfortunately the river was quite dry in August so we missed out on fishing. The kitchen has everything you could need, dishwasher and washing machine along with large oven and hob. We cooked most nights and really enjoyed the experience of eating under the tree each night, followed by a few glasses of wine! The pool area is lovely, there is shade most of the day under a tree which was really needed in August and the pool was a welcome relief, big enough of all 12 plus loads of inflatables ! Although it does not have air conditioning it was cool in most of the rooms because of the thick walls. The only room we found to be a bit stuffy was the very top bedroom, but we found a fan and that sorted the problem out.

The town is about 15 minutes walk and has everything you could need, including a few restaurants and a couple of bars. The bars were really cheap compared to other parts of Italy. There is also a large supermarket just before you reach the town, just at the end of the road leading to the house, which you can walk to in 8 minutes and it sells everything you could need. There are also a couple of really nice bakeries and we purchased pizza dough and tried out the pizza oven, we also bbq'd in the garden a couple of times. Both Christina in Italy and Emma were very quick to answer any questions both before and during out stay and were a pleasure to deal with.

Bolsana lake is really nice to visit, we spent a day there on the beach and hired a speed boat for 40 Euro for one hour which was a really good price. You could also hire bodyboards etc for less than 10 Euro an hour, much cheaper than many places we have visited.

To sum up, we spent a lovely week here, relaxing by the pool and chilling out in the evening under the tree, just perfect!!

Very nice

I'm writing this as I await my flight back to Gatwick. An absolutley brill week away at the yellow house. It was about an hour and a half from Rome but we never got a chance to venture into the capital as there is more than enough to do (or not do) within a short drive of the house. The house itself is perfect for a relaxing holiday. Most of our time (4 adults 2 children) was spent in the sun by the pool, by the pizza oven (make sure you use plenty of the wood provided) or in the kitchen dinner in the evening. Bagnorrigio was 15 minutes away and food shopping was well catered for. The gelateria was brill but there is also one in the village centre near the house. Bolsena is a must too. We didn't get a chance to go to Orvieto or viterbo but maybe next time we can squeeze it in! Great holiday and we will hopefully return

Piece of paradise

  • 5 of 5

The setting, facilities and decor/ furnishing of the Yellow House are superb. We would not hesitate to recommend it to other holiday-makers! The best bits are the amazing kitchen and the incredible marble-patio swimming area with the biggest private pool we have come across. If you like a beautiful, countryside setting with lovely views this property is for you!

Despite its rural setting there is a large supermarket right up the lane and transport links are good ( we hired a car from Orvieto after catching the train there). A car is a must if you want to make the most of the local area.

Thank you for sharing your home - we loved it (and hope to come back some time)!

Perfect country retreat.

  • 5 of 5

This was our third time at the yellow house. The recent improvements have made it so much better. Attention to detail makes it ideal for all ages, and great use was made of the pool and table tennis.

The location is very close to little bars and the shops cater for everyday needs. We have yet to hear any voices other than Italian , perfect!

The large pool is well used and there is space for large families.

We usually visit Lake Bolsena on market day, combining some shopping with a change of scene by the beach.

We highly recommend it, but you do have to book early!.,

keeps getting even better

  • 5 of 5

This was our third stay at the yellow house in 10 years. This time ensuite facilities had been added to the upstais bedrooms & the downstairs bathroom & showeroom refurbished. The spacious kitchen has had a complete refit to an excellent standard I would be happy to live with longterm at home yet lost none of its homely atmosphere. It's equipped to a very high standard with touches such as the traditional kettle on the hob just adding to the country holiday feel.

We went as a group of 7 adults often separating to explore surrounding attractions during the day & meeting up to eat out in nearby Civitella d'Agliano a 10 minute walk away or cooking in house & eating round the large stone table under the oak tree enjoying the views down the valley.

I think we keep returning as the house provides a high standard of accommodation in a beautiful setting making it a peaceful haven yet also the opportunity to explore much of central Italy.

The villa is situated in the heart of wine-making countryside, it is the perfect place to relax and because of its unique location can be used as a base to explore Umbria, Tuscany and Lazio. The House is situated 15 minutes walk from the quiet, medieval village Civitella d’Agliano, in which there are several shops, a petrol station, a Banca di Roma and Post Office. Even nearer home is our local restaurant and a small supermarket. There are several other good restaurants in the area including at the beautiful Hotel La Tana dell’Istrice (the porcupine’s lair), where one can also taste wine from the impressive wine cellars. There is a pizzeria and several small bars. There are facilities for playing tennis, horse-riding, fishing, walking and cycling, information can be found in the Town Hall (Comune). Bagnoregio is the nearest large town and is 15 minutes by car. Orvieto is 40 minutes drive away as is Lake Bolsena, see link to our website for further information.

Other Activities at The Yellow House: wine tasting, cooking demonstrations, table tennis, badminton, table football and clay modeling with clay from the stream
