A newly build cottage less than an hour drive from exciting Reykjavik. The cottage is located by the lake Úlfljótsvatn which is next to Thingvellir, the national park. Also close to other famous landmarks such as Gullfoss and Geysir. The cottage is 114 m2 and three stories high. On the Main floor there is a fully-equipped kitchen with a fridge/freezer, microwave, toast, oven/stove, with a dining area next to the kitchen seating up to 8. And a bathroom with a shower . Up in the sleeping loft there are 2 separate bedrooms with one queen size tempur bed and one king size bed / 2 single beds. There is one room in the basement with a queen size tempur bed. In the basement there is also a hobby room with a sky satellite TV and a good stereo/home theater its a comfortable sofa area for relaxing, watching a movie, or listening to music on the TV, DVD and CD player. Also there is storage room in the basement with a thermostat for the hot tub. Around the cottage there is a 100 m2 porch with a BBQ and a hot tub.
The house is built very high up on a hill with a magnificent view of the lake and surrounding mountains, so i recommend 4x4 car specially during winter but if not there is also possible to park in the driveway and walk up to the house instead you get stunning panoramic mountain view there is also amazing to see the northern lights / aurora. The view is truly amazing!! The cottage is newly built so all the equipment are new. Free Wi-Fi is also included.
My name is Hrafn and on the picture with me is my girlfriend Þórunn. I am 30 and she is 28 years old from Iceland the only family member who isn't in the picture is our little daughter Elma Lind 2 years old she also loves staying with us at the cottage. :)
We live in Reykjavík city. We own the house Brekkur by the lake Úlfjótsvatn,
We love staying there and so do our friends and family so we decided to put it
on Holiday rentals and offer it for rent for other people to enjoy to.
I´ll be happy to assist you in any way I can and help you to make your stay as pleasant as possible.
Hrafn Gudmundsson purchased this cottage in 2010
We had already built the house and were looking for a place to put it on. We had been looking everywhere, but we had few very important tips to remember we wanted good location not far from our home in Reykjavík. And also the views we thought it would be so nice to wake up in this place with these view over the lake and surrounding mountains, hear the wild bird life during summer have the morning sun shining until the evening without anything blocking it and during winter having the strong northern lights with no light pollution like in Reykjavík. So we ended up finding this place and we are so happy we did cause we love staying there with our friends and family. So we decided to offer it for rent for others to enjoy to.
The location is perfect and the view is even better its not far away from Reykjavík (45 min away). Really close to all the major attractions south Iceland has to offer with lots of things to see and do. Then the town Selfoss is only within 20 minutes away where you can find every kind of service needed. So while your enjoying the nature at its best you can easily get every service needed from short distance.
I cannot say enough good things about our stay at the cottage and its owner, Hrafn. My wife and I took a week-long trip to Iceland from the US and decided to rent this cottage as our home for the week. For our trip we rented a car and traveled to different points of Iceland each day. This cottage was an ideal location to do so. Our day trips included: 1) the Golden Circle; 2) Reykjavik; 3) Snæfellsnes peninsula; 4) Reykjanes peninsula; and 5) Vik and the Eyjafjallajokull glacier. This cottage is ideally located to travel to any and all of these for a day trip.
As for the cottage itself, it is clean, modern and very comfortable. The modern amenities include everything you need for a very nice, comfortable stay. My wife and I debate whether the best part of the cottage was the hot tub or the memory foam mattresses. I have never slept better in my life than at this cottage thanks to the Tempur-Pedic mattress and that was a very nice surprise. Watching the Northern Nights from the hot tub was also a phenomenal experience.
Hrafn, the owner, was also very helpful, responsive, and could not have been better -- from our very first contact with him in renting the cottage through our arrival home. We also rented a car for the week directly through Hrafn and that made our experience so much easier.
We highly recommend this cottage to anyone. We stayed with a family of five, including a 3-yr old and a 14 yr old. This cottage is suited for a family of any size or ages (my older two kids loved the wifi as it allowed them to text their friends at night without international data charges).
Thank you Hrafn!!!
We had an amazing 5 nights at this lovely house in April. Good location for visiting many attractions and stunning views from the house. Hfran was very helpful when booking and whilst we were in Iceland. The house is immaculate and is a home from home with everything you could need whilst away. Highlights are too many to list. We did see the Northern lights on the last night of our trip whilst sitting on the deck.
Thank you so much for letting us stay in your lovely house.
We choose this cottage after reading all the wonderful reviews from previous visitors. As soon as I contacted Hfrain nothing was too much trouble for him, he answered all our questions promptly and even helped us hire a suitable 4x4 vehicle. The house is very comfortable and even nicer than the pictures show although it is quite remote especially in the snow.
We arrived a bit early on the Saturday having spent a couple of days in Reykavik which was great. Hfrain was at the cottage and showed us around and we left our luggage before going and getting our shopping for the week in Selfoss (about 20 minute drive away).
We made full use of the hot tub on the deck and we're lucky one night to see the Northern Lights which made my husbands holiday complete.
The cottage is squeaky clean and very comfortable with enough space for 6 people as advertised so for two it was great. There is a huge TV in the den and after a long day sightseeing it was a great place to chill out in with G&T. Oh on the alcohol front if you enjoy a drink bring some with you it is very expensive in Iceland and can only be purchased in Government off licence shop!!!!!
Hfrain kept in touch with us during the week to advise us of prevailing weather conditions and on one day we stayed in enjoying the peace and the view. Sitting on the deck in the morning looking at that view will stay with me for a long time and then in the evening looking at stars waiting to see if lights will make an appearance from the tub amazing.
The kitchen had everything you need for a self catering holiday and as we love to cook that is important for us. Previous visitors have left basic food stuff like pasta and oil and that was great although I have to admit Hfrain I did reorganise cupboards one day! Sorry!
I would highly recommend this cottage to visitors who are like to independent it is clean, comfortable and very good value for money. Thank you Hfrain for sharing your lovely home with us we had a wonderful relaxing holiday in Iceland.
We very much enjoyed using the cottage as our base for the final few days of our holiday in Iceland. We found the location perfect for 'Golden Circle' trips and other expeditions. The cottage is very well furnished and had most things we needed for our stay. Hrafn is a very good host and took his time to explain everything and make sure we were comfortable after arrival. Takk fyrir Hrafn!
We have enjoyed the cottage in the Golden Circle area. A beautiful look over the characteristic landscape. We used the cottage for a week by three couples and one young child. There was enough space for each person. The room in the basement was a very nice place for the the person who wanted a quiet sleep.
The hottub was an unexpected plus during this week. Daily fresh hot water in this area, beautiful. A modern cottage, and a good service.
The place is very central. And the combination with hiring a 4 wheel drive by the owner is nice. Maybe we come back in winter for the Northern Light experience.

There are also lots of beautiful hiking paths nearby
1)Hiking in Þingvellir national park : Numerous hiking trails extend all over the National Park. Outside the ancient assembly site most of the hiking paths are associated with the abandoned farms of Hrauntún, Skógarkot and Vatnskot, remains of which can still be seen.
2)Hiking in Reykjadalur / Steam valley / The hike is not very demanding (although it's not recommended for people that are afraid of heights since at one point you'll be hiking along the top of a deep gorge) and you reach the warm river after about 45-90 minutes (depending on how fast you walk and how often you stop to take pictures of the waterfall in the gorge and all the pretty bubbling muddy hot springs on the way). There are no facilities for changing your clothes when you get up there.
Extra charge of 55£ is charged for final cleaning plus linen + towels and preparing for next group of guests.
