This Stonehouse is professionally managed by Vacation Home Management Azores(Quinta das Acacias)

Welcome to our humble refuge. This cozy self-catered home has provided shelter for generations in this peaceful coastal fishing village. Today is no exception if you are searching for a peaceful getaway from the modern busy world you live in.

Enjoy this comfortable yet modest 3 bedroom stonehouse. This self catered home can be your escape into your emotional well being. Open your mind and senses to the sea at your back door.

Take advantage of the terrace for your entire day´s activities… breakfast, then that delicious second cup of coffee and a book, maybe a pre-lunch nap in the morning sun, and then it is time for lunch.

Ah lunch! Now, remember where you are. It is not familiar ground. Sounds different, smells different, and feels different. This can take some planning, but, you know what? It is worth it! Take a white baguette. Not just a white flour thing that came out of the oven brown on the outside. No. It has to look like a pale baguette that has never been sun tanned. Slice and open it lengthways and spread mayonnaise. Not too much, even if you are a mayo lover, you need to hold from this temptation. You spread just enough to taste the tang. Next, lay thin slices of fresh medium ripe tomato, followed by our famous Azorean St. Jorge cheese, the sharp version. Finally the secret ingredient that combines the moment, the atmosphere, the sea and old Europe……fresh, garden grown like nature intended it – basil. Accompanied with a side of olives, not the salty green ones the bigger the better, or the ones stuffed with the pimento that look like a Christmas ornament. No. Look for the container that says mixed olives. They are funny looking, different sizes, pale-greenish brown, purple and black. But, they have the olive oil flavor in them. Frame this lunch composition with an Azorean wine that will complete the moment. Produced in Pico, grown and nurtured in the lava rocks and bathed by the Atlantic sun…….Terras de Lava white 2009 or 2011, red 2011.

Enjoy the peaceful moments of low tide and splash away your tensions in the natural pool.

Finish your perfect day with a BBQ and dinner on the terrace.

Conclude your dinner by watching the sunset on the ocean while savoring the fruity flavors of our Azorean wines or sipping our famous port wine from mainland Portugal.

And to cap it all, reflect on your day as you lay your head on the pillow and allow the murmurs of the ocean at your window soothe your peaceful self into sleep.

Make your reservation early to avoid disappointment!

About Bonita Sousa

The Stone house

Many years ago when I left this island with my parents searching for a better life, I left something behind that only recently I have come to realize. While courting my wife of thirty six years now, I used to talk about returning to my birth place one day and have a house on a rocky cliff overlooking the ocean. A place to reflect, a place to watch the waves dance onto shore, a place to fall into a restful sleep by the sounds of the ocean murmurs. Much like a blanket of soothing words, this connection ties the two together, man and sea.

This cozy stone house, in this quiet village of Mosteiros, has lived this enchanted magic that exists between man and sea. Bound by this magical spell, many of us that have left this place eventually return one by one searching for that little piece of human spirit that was left behind.

I have not found a better way to describe this world called Azores. I can only respond with this, “One has to be here personally and experience it.”

Many books already exist and many more could be written. Yet, with all my heart I believe that words will not describe it.

This magic does not belong to only a chosen few, it is bound to all. However, you will not know it until the time you come together, face to face, man and sea

What makes this cottage unique

-View of the sunsets while you enjoy a glass of wine

-Traditional routine of buying fresh fish, bread and vegetable from the trucks that pass your door everyday.

-Stormwatching during winter season-front seat from your window.

Already reserved for your dates, contact us for other options . We have several properties on the island.

Amazing stay in the Azores !!!

  • 5 of 5

We had an incredible time on Sao Miguel. First week was in Ponta Delgado and the second week we decided to stay on the western end of the island. Nestled in the beautiful town of Mosteiros, the Stonehouse was clean, cozy, and comfortable. As everyone had stated before.. You will never forget your first step into this house. With a fantastic patio to enjoy breathtaking views and a fun salt water pool fed by the cool waters of the Atlantic, this house is a very enchanting place. The bedrooms were simple and tidy and the adobe style kitchen has everything you need to cook you own meals.... and believe me, nothing is better then when the local breadman or fisherman drives by in the AM to deliver fresh treasures from the island. There is only a few restaurants in the town, so driving around the island is a must.. And definitely do so.. the island deserves to be explored... between the vigorous hikes, the hot springs, and the gorgeous views along the cliffs, this place is a true paradise of the Atlantic. WE look forward to coming back to the Azores with friends, and I'm sure we will be returning to the Stonehouse! Thank you Bonita & Ed!!!

Amazing and Authentic Experience

  • 5 of 5

We loved being immersed in the life of this village. There is a simplicity and peacefulness about the place. Morning walks, shopping for groceries in the little store, buying fruits and vegetables from a truck, going to sleep by the sound of the waves and awakening to the sound of the roosters, cooking simple meals at "home" and eating fresh food simply prepared in several local restaurants, hanging the wash on the clothesline on the porch, eating at the picnic table, gazing at the ocean. There is a strikingly beautiful rock formation out in the ocean a short distance from the cottage. It became our beacon, whether walking around the village or coming "home" from exploring other parts of the island. I called it "OUR rock formation" because it was so much a part of our experience.

The cottage and its location are lovely. The views are awe inspiring. The cottage itself is charming, comfortable, well equipped without unnecessary accoutrements. And it is so real--not some recently constructed resort plopped down in the midst of the village, but instead it is an integral part of its environment. In that sense, it has integrity, it belongs here, it is "at home" in the village. I am sure that that contributed mightily to our sense of being "at home" in Mosteiros, even though we were only there for a week.

We say OBRIGADA to Bonita for her gracious hospitality, both as we planned this trip and upon our arrival.

Would we go back?

Most certainly!

Owner's Response: Dear Beth and Jim, Thank you for your romantic way of describing the ambiance of the village and Stonehouse. Many guests have felt right at home in this little gem on the ocean coast. It has modern amenities but the traditional flare about it. Until next visit, have a great year! Bonita VHM Azores

Sunset views; Waves lull you to sleep

  • 4 of 5

Lovely house with amazing views! Ocean-fed pool is great. Bonita greeted us with a huge loaf of fresh bread. House has 3 nice bedrooms. Kitchen has 4-burner stove and oven, full size fridge, microwave, electric tea kettle, coffee makers, and toaster. The washer and dryer were useful, allowing us to come home with clean clothes. The lounge chairs can be enjoyed on terrace or upper deck--so many places to absorb that gorgeous view. This place is fully equipped with beach gear: towels, boogie boards, and more. Drawbacks are that there are few (1?) restaurants for dining out, and the local grocery doesn't have many options for eating in. Other options are ~15-20 minutes drive. House faces west, so nicest bedroom, with those views and waves, also gets the afternoon sun. We didn't know what bring, so found that we had to provide toilet paper and soap.

Nice house in a stunning location

  • 5 of 5

Everything about our stay here was wonderful - the island, the countryside, the town, and the house. To walk in the door and be greeted with that view was indescribable. The house had everything you needed, and the private pool filled by the ocean waves was cool. It's a bit of a trek down stone steps to get to it, but it's worth it. The island has so many beautiful places to see, and it's a hiker's paradise, if you're so inclined. Just be sure you have a car and aren't afraid to drive on windey roads. The roads are in good condition, but they are very curvy.

Owner's Response: Thank you for your great review! The details are very inviting! However the pool is not private but a public pool. It is on Government coastline, therefore the locals interested in walking across the rocks can use the pool as well. The switchback roads contour many of the hills, which makes for a very interesting island to enjoy. We recommend you have a powerful engine or larger engine in the car rental due to many of the roads are on steep hills and small engines will not do well to climb them. We work with a major car rental company that helps us get the right car to drive for your family at discounted rates. Ask Us!

Jaw dropping once you open the door and look through the windows.

  • 5 of 5

Driving down the road the anticipation is quite thrilling. The view down the street just before you park looking down to the pink water fountain at the end of the road is very photogenic. Once you walk in the Stone House and look through the windows out to the sea you can't help but to drop your bags and run out the door to the patio and be memorized by the power and beauty of your view. The town and surrounding area has a view at just about every corner. Slow down and at not only the big picture, but also the small one. The Azores has so much to offer.

Owner's Response: Good evening John and Lori, Thank you for the review . Your creative writing will have future visitors imagining they are there for the first time; the emotions of days gone by when you walk into the Stonehouse, the feeling of power when you stand by the ocean watching the waves. We are looking forward to seeing you both again soon. Kind regards, Bonita

Within the village of Mosteiros one can enjoy the black sandy beach that is only about 200 meters from the stone house.

There is a convenience grocery store within 50 meters and a pharmacy at about 100 meters. There are a few café bar types where one can get an espresso or something stronger. Two traditional small restaurants in the village offer lunch meals on daily basis, and dinners during the summer months.

If you are a fish enthusiast, you may get the opportunity of buying fresh fish at the port when the local fishing boats come in around nine in the morning.

In the neighboring village of Ginetes, a 20 minute drive, you will find a place called Ferraria, where a thermal spring is found on the ocean´s edge where you can swim in the warm water.

Visit the Azores and come see the green island known as Sao Miguel. Allow your senses to go back in time and let us make this a special holiday for you.
