Great City Getaway

  • 5 of 5

I absolutely loved my stay at this house. We had a large group (11 people!) and it was comfortable for all of us. The house has great amenities (hot tub, fire pit, outdoor bar) and is well equipped. The property manager texted to make sure we had everything we needed and was very easy to work with. The location was great - 1 mile from the national park and only about a 10 minute drive to downtown Joshua Tree. It's very quiet and a great way to get away from the city. I personally stayed in the dome and loved it. It has a heater for the winter, but definitely turn it on a while before you're going to bed as the nights can get cold in January. The only thing that was lacking (which is super minor and didn't take away from our stay) was the outdoor lighting. There are a few lanterns available that would help, but as a guest, you may want to bring one or two larger ones. Also, of note, if you want to use the fire pit, bring your own firewood. We really enjoyed the fire during the cold night. Someone had even left marshmallows behind for us to roast! And also, definitely follow the directions provided to the house. Desert Shadows is also a dirt road, but is pretty even. I highly recommend this house and hope to have the opportunity to return.

Well appointed/equipped. Great view and overall location. On the ball property management.

  • 5 of 5

We just finished up a 3-day stay. It was only the 2 of us, but this property could easily hold a large family or multiple couples.

Things that went wrong:

Unfortunately, the oven and stove were not working and we had planned a dinner that required baking. I would have liked to know this before hand. We had access to a propane grill, a charcoal grill, and a toaster oven and just improvised.

The coffee maker was broken.

The propane tank used to heat up the Dome was empty.

I had trouble getting the satellite TV working at first.

All of this would be enough to take away a star, or maybe two. However...

What went right:

After reaching out to ask about the stove, the property manager had promptly replied via text.

After explaining, politely, that things were off to a rough start, she worked very hard.

The next morning a new coffee maker was on the front porch, a new propane tank was installed for the Dome, and the reset instructions she sent for the satellite (surprisingly) worked on 2 out of the 3 TVs.

[Surprisingly because it was the standard “reboot everything” style procedure.]

We made very liberal use of the spa to ease achy bones after 6+ miles of moderately hard hiking two days in a row.

This is an older place, but it has been updated. It’s very homey and comfortable. Old records. Board games. Huge leather couch to stretch out on. Felt like a real home that real people would be in. We thought it was great despite the mis-steps that were corrected immediately.

Spacious house

  • 5 of 5

Five adults and a 4 year old spent two nights at this house. The house is very spacious and well-equipped (kitchen equipment, spices, etc). There are three bedrooms; one bathroom is in the hallway, the second bathroom is attached to one of the bedrooms. For such a short stay we decided to eat breakfast at the house but eat lunch and dinners out. The location is most convenient: 1 mile from the entrance to Joshua Tree National Park; 10 min. drive to the town of Joshua Tree for meals. We made use of the hot tub and also built a fire outdoors one night. The dome was a fun place to spend time in but it was too cold to sleep there during our visit. Two of us took the hike right behind the house (not well marked)--too steep for small children or elderly. The manager responded quickly to any of our questions.

Recommend the Barker Dam Loop hike (~1 mile) at the Park. It was an easy hike with beautiful views.

Would definitely go back to stay at this house.

Great house, great location

  • 5 of 5

We came for a vacation with extended family - five adults and three kids (ages 6, 10 and 12). This house was perfect for us - there was enough space for us all to be together or for the kids to be playing/watching tv in one room while adults relaxed in the living room.

The house was clean, the bedrooms and living areas were spacious, the bathrooms were beautifully designed, and the beds and pillows were comfortable. And the location, one mile from the park entrance, can't be beat. It was so nice to be able to go explore the park for the day and then have "home" just minutes away. The backyard area was also great for the kids to climb and explore. And the occasional coyote spotted running down the road at dusk was an added bonus!

The only glitch was the oven wasn't working which apparently was known but not communicated to us until we asked about it (because we were in the middle of preparing dinner and needed it)! There was a nice sized toaster oven we were able to use instead. Other than that, the owner and property manager both checked in on us a few times to make sure all was well and always responded quickly to a message or question.

I have no hesitation in highly recommending this house for a Joshua Tree stay and I would definitely stay here again!

Beautiful spot for a relaxing time

  • 5 of 5

Stayed here over the weekend with my wife and our siblings and just had an absolutely wonderful time. The house + dome were very comfortable and accommodated all 10 of us. The outside has so many great little microspaces to hang out in. And it's super close to the park!

The only issue we had was with parking. My siblings live all across the country so we had a bunch of rental cars, and we learned very late in our planning that a county wide short term rental ordinance stated we could only legally have 4 cars at the house based on its max occupancy (or else what? I don't know, but it was added stress that we didn't need).

Loved the place, we would definitely come back with fewer cars :)

Great place next to Joshua Tree

  • 4 of 5

Great location to the park. Quiet surroundings watching gambel quail every morning and listening to coyotes howl as we slept in the glamping tent. Good view of the milky way once the moon set. Hot tub was relaxing after long hikes.

It is an easy drive to museums, golf, shopping, art galleries and even southern California's famous theme parks. Great local restaurants are nearby for a night out. We are only 45 minutes from Palm Springs and all it has to offer. The Desert House is an excellent vacation rental with something for everyone.
