Overview

About the property

Built in 1940, the "Don Wilson Cottage" is a charming 2+ bed/2 bath waterfront retreat located in Oxford, MD. Stroll or bike to local restaurants, parks, beaches, historic sights, and a great ice cream shop! A short drive or ferry from the popular towns of St. Michaels and Easton.

Watch the boats go by from our new screened in Porch, or take a nap in the hammock on our expansive green lawn. Go crabbing, fishing, or kayaking off our dock.

The Don Wilson Cottage is a one level, 2 bedroom, 2 bath house that is a perfect getaway for couples or small families looking to be on the water and/or walking distance to town. Each bedroom has a new comfy queen size bed in it. We also have a private front room (although not technically a bedroom since it doesn't have a closet) with a new twin daybed in there that pulls out to a king, perfect for children! Both bathrooms have showers, and one of them also has a deep tub.

Our screened in porch has great water views, and is our favorite place to hang out during the warmer months and enjoy morning coffee or afternoon cocktails. The cottage has a cute kitchen that is stocked with plenty of eating, cooking and drinking supplies, including a coffee maker, stove, microwave, toaster and blender. We do not have a dishwasher though, but will provide sponges, dish soap, towels and paper plates to those who wish to use them.

The house also has fast WiFi, cable TV, a brand new washer-dryer, and a propane grill. Linens and bath towels are also included. One Double kayak, two adult bicycles, a hammock, and lawn games are available for you to use. We also have a crab pot if you want to try to catch your own dinner off our dock!

We do not recommend swimming off the dock, but there is a small beach within walking distance. Also we recommend kayaking only when it is high tide, as it will be easier to get the kayak in and out of the water. If you want to go during low tide, you can walk or drive it a few minutes to the end of the block where there is a little beach access, perfect for dropping it in the water.

Located only 70 miles from both DC and Baltimore, Oxford is a perfect weekend getaway spot! Situated where the Tred Avon and Choptank rivers meet, the small town is surrounded by water and offers many spots for watching the sunset or taking a quick dip!

Although small, Oxford is big on charm and history. The Don Wilson Cottage is on a quiet street, within a 15 minute walk of all the amenties the town has to offer. There are 5 restaurants, including two that are on the water, as well as a great coffee shop, book store, several gift shops and a general food market. There is also a museum, a small library, and a famous ice cream shop, known for it's vast selection of fresh flavors made daily! There are also many historic sites and houses, which are nice to explore on foot or with one of the bikes. If you are looking to rent a boat or jetski while you are here, you can also do so right in the town, and it will be delivered right to our dock.

The Oxford Bellevue Ferry is also right in town, and carries people, bikes and cars to the St. Michaels side, home of the Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum, and many eclectic shops, and wonderful restaurants, all about 20 minutes away from the Don Wilson by car. In the other direction, only 15 minutes by car, you will find Easton, with more restaurants, an art academy, and shops. Within an hour's drive is Blackwater Wildlife Refuge, which is great for hiking, exploring and nature watching.

About The Owner

We live in Washington DC but escape to the Eastern Shore on the weekends as much as we can. Both my husband and I work for technology companies.

The Owner purchased this cottage in 2016

Why The Owner chose Oxford

We love being by the water and kayaking/crabbing off our dock. Oxford is our favorite small town on the Shore which is why we wanted to buy a place walking distance to the charming town, cute shops, and great dining spots.

Charming waterfront cottage

  • 5 of 5

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at the Don Wilson cottage! This cottage has everything one would need for a fun and relaxing stay by the water- bikes, kayaks, grill, screened porch and dock. The cottage is in a prime location and you really can walk to everything you would like to do in Oxford. Though the time we visited Oxford in early April was chilly, we still walked everyday in the lovely town, enjoyed the restaurants and explored the surrounding area, including St Michael's, the new Harriet Tubman museum south of Cambridge - very interesting!- and Easton. The cottage and Oxford are a fabulous escape - it was hard to believe we were only 1.5 hours from the hustle and bustle of home in Baltimore!

Tracy the owner was very easy to work with and very responsive when we contacted her. We had a delightful time and it was hard to leave!

Lovely stay in a clean, homey cottage

  • 5 of 5

We had a lovely stay at this immaculate 1940's cottage, with a large recent screen-porch addition. Fenced back yard, that would be wonderful for children, that extended out to the local marina. There were lovely lighted Christmas tree shapes on each dock at the holidays.

The living room and dining room were huge, with new contemporary furniture. The kitchen is more compact. Each bedroom had a firm queen-sized bed, with soft linens, a duvet, and plenty of pillows. One BR has a small closet. There is also a trundle bed in a small converted porch, which would fit an individual 5' 9" or shorter. Hot water is plentiful, prompt, and soft. Of note, one must step down from the bedroom level to each bathroom. Each guest is allotted one bath towel. Liquid hand soap, dish soap, toilet tissue, paper towels are all provided, but one must bring one's own bath soap: no biggie. There is good WiFi, prompt heat, and a washer and dryer.

Nice neighborhood to walk. It is easy to miss the side street at first, as it has a small, dark sign hidden by cars parked on the main road. During a winter visit, the local market wasn't carrying much; if you plan on eating breakfast in the cottage, as we did, and having some fruit in the afternoon, suggest stocking up at the grocery stores in Easton before driving the 10 miles out to Oxford.

Comfortable rooms, generous amenities, and great location

  • 5 of 5

We were not able to stay for our entire rental due to a health emergency but we will definitely try to book again. The screened porch was a comfortable place to gather.

An idyllic, peaceful weekend away from the city!

  • 5 of 5

Don Wilson cottage is a lovely home full of character and fantastic amenities. Located on the Tred Avon in Oxford, it has a private dock, huge back yard, kayaks, bicycles and my very favorite, a screened-in back porch. We enjoyed biking to St. Michaels, kayaking and just relaxing at sunset on the porch. Would definitely recommend Doc's Grille for the sunset and Capsize for a great crab cake. Would of used the tennis courts a block away but they were being re-surfaced. Will definitely return!
