Ciutadella is the previous capital city of Menorca; it is set to the west of the island. The town is an old Moorish town, shown by its architecture, history and culture. There is a lot of history and land marks to be viewed in the town. The town centre is the main shopping zone for the local resorts, making a great day out!
Ciutadella is around 50km from Mahon (MAH) Airport, and the transfer time is between 45 minutes to an hour.
Cala’n Forcat
Cala’n Forcat is a lively resort where there are plenty of restaurants, shops bars and entertainment. The whole area around Cala‘n Forcat is new and has been built and improved from the 1980’s. The resort has been joined together with Cala’n Blanes and Cala’n Brut to form the Los Delfines area.
The beaches in Cala’n Forcat are small coves along the rugged coastline, two of them to the north of the resort, accessed by steps, so not ideal for elderly or disabled. One of the beaches to the north has a diving centre there. There is another one to the south of the resort, having diving boards and platforms into the sea. There is a mini train that runs from the resort to this beach every half hour.
Calan Forcat is one of Menorca’s liveliest resorts, there are numerous bars, discos, karaoke and small night clubs, that all open up in the night and take you through to the early hours of the morning. There are themed bars and English/Irish pubs and many nights of live entertainment.
The restaurants in the area all serve a range of local to international cuisine; you can get Indian, Chinese, Mexican, British, Fish – and also Burgers, Hotdogs and Fish and Chips.
Fiestas in Menorca are always lavish and extravagant, many processions, music, dancing, food and drink. There are many fiestas throughout the year, which the locals treat as a public holiday, only the bars and restaurants stay open. Many different towns have fiestas at different times throughout the year, on top of the main Menorcan ones.
Fiesta of Sant Joan – Held in Ciutadella, 23rd – 24th June.
Fiesta of Sant Antoni – 17th Jan, usually the craft fair joins onto the celebrations.
Larger towns have their Annual Carnival on the Thursday after Ash Wednesday.
Any De Sa Desgracia “Our Year of Disgrace” – To commemorate the day when Ciutadella underwent a brutal destruction from led by the Turkish troops, held on the 9th July.
Open Air Markets – held in the Plaza de Mercat each day and the Friday/Saturday markets held in Plaza de Es Born. There is also a market in Ciutadella. They have stalls offering fruit and vegetables, leather goods, local produce and souvenirs.
The shops in the small surrounding resorts are mostly the supermarket/SPAR type shops and the typical souvenir shops. You have to venture further afield to get the designer shops and vintage boutiques, Ciutadella, where there is some great shopping to be done.

Cala’n forcat is one of the main resorts in Menorca, so the town is quite compact, making it easy to get around on foot. There are also taxis in the area, which would only cost a few Euros to get around. There are mini-train taking people to and from the beach. The local bus service is good and there is a service running to and from Ciutadella every 20mins, only costing a few Euros.
