We had a fantastic holdiday in Le Bastidon! Perfect for our family of 4 and our dog. The house is beautiful and complete, decorated with a great sense of style ( we lóved the little paintings!), the swimmingpool is very luxurious, the calmness of the area gives a real sense of freedom(you do not have to think of any neighbours..), the beautiful hiking paths right at your doorstep, the turtles in the wild.... I can go on and on!! But to summarize it: we had The Perfect Holiday here, and we are definitely coming back!
I think I want to give 4.5 stars but can't!
The pictures are accurate and le bastidon is charming, beautiful, romantic and secluded. We had a lovely week.
The cottage is small but has everything you need. The kitchen was well equipped. The iPhone/ iPad docking speakers are a good touch and we appreciated the DVD player (I brought some DVDs) as no English TV not even a news channel. But we weren't there to watch tv so no problem! The free bottle of wine was also a nice touch.
The pool is as lovely as it looks. Jumping in was the first thing I did!
Slight negatives were that the water was off one morning (our first morning) but it was rectified that same morning. The "reporting mechanism" (texting/ calling Solveig works v well).
The location and view means the property is extremely exposed to wind which whips up through the valley and through the property like a wind tunnel. We learned that it's isolated ie a kind of micro climate: it doesn't mean it's blowing a gale elsewhere but we couldn't use the pool or outside kitchen for majority of stay, had to retrieve pool furniture from down the hill every morning and had disturbed sleep (rattling doors and windows). But we came in September so it's early autumn not summer, and we might have been unlucky with the weather. It didn't ruin the holiday but it was an issue for us - admittedly one out of the owners control. The pool and outside kitchen were a draw so we were v disappointed not to use them much.
The mountain roads are fun, certainly beautiful but also scary. Especially the way some other drivers use them. I think the driving did tire my husband. We didn't spend any full days at the property (windy) so every day involved narrow roads and hairpin bends.
We'd consider a return but never in autumn. It is a charming property, well looked after and worth a visit. I loved the location with both coast and mountains accessible to us although we're debating whether being closer to a train line would help us on future trips.
I was sad to leave and am sad to be home. It was a little bit of heaven. But it turns out that heaven is windy!
My husband and me, our youngest daughter and a friend of her enjoyed our stay at the Bastidon enourmesly. The house is charming and very complete equipped. Inside not very big, but the poul and its surroundings are more than beautiful. Lovely vieuw and complete silence. The pittoresque village of Garde Freinet is at a distance of 7 kilomters. There a small amount of good shops and restaurants.
I highly recommend to spend your holidays in the Bastidon.

Sehr schönes Haus in bergiger Umgebung.
Everything about this property was well appointed and thought out. It was fully equipped with relaxation of the guests in mind...then there was the infinity pool. The view from the pool was magnificent and watching the sunset over the valley each evening incredibly romantic. We would absolutely return again and highly recommend this property to anyone looking for a romantic and peaceful setting. We were quite sad to leave at the end!
Hiking on the 250 acres estate of vineyards, olive groves, chestnut and cork oak trees with breathtaking views over the hills and valleys of the Mediterranean hinterland.
Horse riding or quad biking in the Massif des Maures.
La Garde Freinet hosts a variety of good restaurants and shops with 2 market days per week. There are numerous golf courses and horse riding nearby and a huge variety of beaches to visit along the Cote d'Azur coast, the nearest being a 30 minute drive. There are wonderful medieval and rustic villages, historic buildings to explore and many vineyards to visit for wine tasting.
