In Greek 'Chrisi' means 'golden' and when you stay at this gorgeous stone villa you will completely understand how the villa's name came about. The villa has been built using pretty honey-gold coloured stone taken from a small quarry on the outskirts of the nearby village of Gavalohori. The wonderful traditional features such as stone arches, and wood beamed ceilings, windows, shutters and pergolas all made from local cypress wood, blend seamlessly with every modern amenity to create a comfortable home that is welcoming in the extreme. In addition, Chrisi Villa has a hillside location with a stunning panorama that encompasses the famously picturesque Souda Bay, the surrounding countryside, and the scenic White Mountains, which at dusk are bathed with the vibrant gold and crimson hues of the setting sun that are usually only seen on a picture postcard. To complete this idyllic setting, you can often hear the gentle sound of sheep bells coming from the olive groves to north and west of the villa.
The laid-back rural location belies the fact that Chrisi Villa is only a few minutes by car to the well stocked mini-market and 3 very different tavernas in Kokkino Horio, or 10 minutes drive to the beach and many amenities in Almyrida. The attractive garden and lovely private pool terrace are a relaxing haven which you will find difficult to leave, however it would be a shame not to explore the area's countless wonderful sites, including the Ancient Roman Cisterns and Turkish Castle at Aptera, the Venetian Harbour town of Chania, and the sandy beaches and small rocky coves that are blessed with crystal clear turquoise water and are perfect for snorkelling.
All of the outdoor areas at Chrisi Villa benefit from the fabulous scenery that invites you to sit back and do nothing more strenuous than take in the far-reaching views. Mouth-watering meals with juicy locally grown salads and freshly caught fish that has been grilled on the barbecue can be savoured in the brilliant sunshine during the day, or under the breathtakingly clear star filled night sky. The pool terrace is flanked by 2 mature date palms and an ivy covered trellis that provides excellent screening, whilst the eye-catching pool takes centre stage with its sparkling waters that beckon invitingly. Guests who enjoy moments of solitude will appreciate the good sized, landscaped garden that incorporates areas with olive trees, natural stone outcrops, wild flowers in the Spring, and flowerbeds planted with colourful hibiscus, African daisies, Margarita daisies, oleanders, cacti, 'Hottentot Fig', and aromatic lavender.
The interiors of Villa Chrisi have many fine attributes and the relaxing atmosphere of a home away from home. Very comfortable and classically Cretan, the furnishings and decor are attractive and easy on the eye. The clever 'upside down' design maximizes the views from the upstairs living area and dining terrace, and helps to keep the 2 downstairs bedrooms naturally cool - although on the lovely long hot summer days and warm balmy nights that Crete is celebrated for there is air conditioning throughout the villa. A feature stone archway is situated between the bright living room and kitchen, both of which open out on to a large semi shaded balcony/terrace that has a teak dining table and chairs with green cushions, a barbecue, a potted bougainvillea, and overlooks the pool and surrounding countryside to the shimmering sea and majestic mountains.
The English owners spend quite a lot of time at Villa Chrisi and it is therefore not just your average holiday villa. Every modern comfort has been supplied including satellite TV, a DVD player, a stereo unit with a CD player, Free WIFI internet access, a fully fitted, very well equipped kitchen, fully tiled bathrooms. The air conditioning units also double up as heaters for the cooler nights at the start and end of the season, and there is a wood burning stove in the living room. For entertainment purposes a good selection of books and DVD's have been thoughtfully supplied.
In summation it can be said that anyone seeking a well-equipped stone villa at the end of a hill side track with breathtaking views and in close proximity to a charming, traditional village, will be completely enamoured by Chrisi Villa.

Villa Chrisi is exclusively booked by Frankie Miles. Frankie runs Villas Crete Holidays which is a registered Tourist Office, based in Hampshire, England, and with a representative and resort administrator in Almyrida, Crete. Whilst most travel companies cover many different countries and/or areas of Greece and Crete, we only work in the North West of Crete and we specialise in the Apokoranas region, just east of the historic Venetian town of Chania. The Apokoronas (including the villages of Almyrida, Kalives, Kokkino Horio, Plaka and Gavalohori) has long been a popular destination for holiday makers seeking a typically Greek seaside resort area that has many amenities, but is far removed from brash tourism. The area is renowned for its sandy beaches, crystal clear turquoise water, stunning views of Souda Bay and The White Mountains, excellent tavernas, and many archaeological sites.
Frankie is very hands-on at Villas Crete Holiday. She has worked with rental villas on Crete for more than 20 years and has written the best selling guide book "Crete on the Road". The book includes detailed directions and information to all the major tourist attractions, as well as many hidden sites. Also in the book is the only existing map of the National Highway showing all of the entrances/exits and distances. Frankie’s unrivalled knowledge, love of the island, and attention to detail is now being fully put to use to guarantee a fantastic holiday for our guests.
Villa Chrisi combines traditional Cretan styling with modern amenities. The views are gorgeous and the location is seeiming rural yet close to the beach, village, tavernas and shops.
Villas Crete Holidays truly are the Apokoronas Specialists as unlike other offices, 3 of the 4 members of our expert team live and work here all year round which enables us to always have completely up-to-date information about the villas, local facilities, and tourist attractions. We can help you with all aspects of your holiday including good value, reliable car hire, airport transfers, local information about shops, beaches, tavernas etc, detailed driving directions or walking directions for many routes. We can also arrange private boat hire, private boat trips, private sight-seeing flights, horse riding, water-skiing, big game fishing, guided walking, and guided coach excursions. Our office staff speak English, Greek, and a little French, and have a vast list of local contacts, and our representative in resort also speaks some Italian.
Both the company itself, and Frankie's book have been featured and recommended in articles in major British newspapers including the Sunday Mail and the Sunday Telegraph, as well as smaller publications such as Greece Magazine.
Most importantly, because we handle many villas, in the unlikely event that there is an unforeseen problem at your villa, we can usually offer you an alternative villa (although this cannot be guaranteed in high season).
We have many years experience working in tourism on Crete, and most importantly this experience is specifically related to villa rentals, which needs a very different area of expertise to other types of tourism such as walking holidays, or package holidays for the masses. We use all of our knowledge and local contacts to ensure that your holiday goes off smoothly from start to finish, from first booking the villa that is most suitable for you, to your arrival back home. When you are in resort, we are available during office hours for information, and 24 hours a day should you need medical assistance, yet we remain unobtrusive.
The main taverna in Kokkino Horio and the mini market are 1.5km from Villa Chrisi. The family-run taverna is shaded by weeping willow trees and has delicious food. During the summer months there are occasional live Cretan music nights at the taverna, which are a lot of fun. Kokkino Horio (“red village” in Greek) was the main village set for the film “Zorba the Greek”. There are little whitewashed houses and narrow streets that wind around the village centre. At the village kafenion you can find older locals who were used as extras in the film, and who will happily show you photos of themselves with Anthony Quinn. Also in Kokkino Horio is the famous glass blowing workshop and excellent organic taverna. Here you can watch recycled glass being blown in the traditional manner into amazingly beautiful products including lampshades, ornaments, decanters, plates and bowls. On the upper outskirts of the village is The Retreat Taverna which has beautiful views and is only 800m from Villa Chrisi. The coastline below Villa Chrisi is famous for its sea caves, and it has Koutalas cove, which is a rocky inlet with a small stony/sandy beach. Plaka Square is just 2.5km away and has 7 tavernas, 2 well stocked mini markets, a shop with local products, a an Italian restaurant, and 6 cafes. 7 minutes away by car is the lovely village of Almyrida which is built around a crescent shaped sandy beach. The beach is very shallow and safe, which is good news if you have children or are not a strong swimmer. Lining the beach are many excellent tavernas, cafes and shops. Also in Almyrida there is a space with pool tables and a variety of games machines, a scuba diving centre, pedalo and paddle board rentals, a children's play centre with babysitting, a water sports centre which rents out kayaks, windsurfers and catamarans and Villa Crete Holidays for tourist information, private boat hire, boat trips, big game fishing, water-skiing, horse riding, private sightseeing flights in a light aircraft, guided walking, and coach tours.
A few minutes by car from the villa, there are a huge variety of archaeological sites and traditional villages with wonderful tavernas. There is also an interesting selection of small craft centres and museums, including glass blowing in Kokkino Horio, and lace making in Gavalohori.
For those of you who like more activity, the beautiful Venetian town of Chania is only 45 minutes away by car.
Cooking classes and wine tasting set at a local wineries can be taken by those of you who are interested. Guided walks led by experts in mountaineering and/or flora and fauna can also be arranged.
For those of you who prefer to venture out on your own, a copy of the guide book 'Crete on the Road' by Frankie Miles comes with every villa. The book contains detailed directions to many well known and hidden sites, opening times and prices for all attractions, taverna recommendations, and the only existing map of the National Highway showing the exits and entrances.
Crete has everything you that could possibly want from a holiday: soaring mountains that are snow capped from November to June, many great walking trails including Europe's deepest gorge, ancient archaeological sites and Minoan palaces, quaint villages, sparkling clear blue seas with tavernas serving freshly caught fish, golden beaches, glorious wild flowers in the Spring, and a variety of delicious foods which are all made from healthy home grown produce.
As incredible as the island is, it is the Cretan people who will make your holiday truly memorable. Descendants of the Minoan's, one of Europe's earliest civilizations, and shaped by centuries of struggle against oppression, the Cretans are as rugged as the mountains, fiercely independent but passionately friendly.
Villa Chrisi is located in the heart of The Apokoronas Region just east of the beautiful town of Chania. With its stunning Venetian harbour, quayside bars and restaurants, what better place to relax and watch the world go by. In the narrow streets behind Chania's harbour you will find tavernas, bars, the famous covered market, and many local shops selling handicrafts, textiles, jewellery and hand made ceramics. Visit 'Leather Lane' for outstanding hand made leather bargains.
The climate of Crete is a temperate Mediterranean climate and the weather is characterized by long hot, dry summers and mild winters. The Spring can be warm and sunny during the day but still have cooler evenings and is perfect for walking, birdwatching and looking at the wild flowers. All in all Crete is absolutely perfect for your Villa holiday.
