About John

Randall and Bess Morehouse maintain their home base in Hilo, Hawaii; but love to visit Colorado as often as possible. They have a son in Denver and enjoy visiting the city, the mountains, and other sites in the area.

John purchased this house in 2007

Why John chose Golden

The moment we saw this house, we knew it was the 'one.' Sitting up on a slope, it catches gentle breezes and has a lovely view of the town of Golden. The front yard consists of landscaped terraces and the back yard - with no neighbors behind - is perfect for relaxing or entertaining.

The neighborhood, which includes 100 year-old homes, is quiet and charming. We have made many improvements to the property since we purchased it, including stabilizing the foundation, painting interior and exterior, installing new windows, new roofing, and new appliances; including range, washer/dryer, A/C and furnace. We love to walk into town and to stroll along scenic Clear Creek on a regular basis.

What makes this house unique

Our guests tell us they love to relax and enjoy the view from our new front porch. In the winter, snowy hillsides and city lights are in view, and in the summer July 4 fireworks can be enjoyed. Although the house is an easy 15 minute walk from the Golden main street area, wildlife including deer and fox occasionally visit the property

Clean and close to downtown!

  • 5 of 5

I had my mom and brother stay here during my recent wedding... not only were they walking distance from where I currently live, they could easily explore Golden without a car. the house was neat and tidy when they arrived and it had *almost* everything they needed (i.e., no extra toilet paper!!), and was also air-conditioned. That was a big deal for the 90+ degree temperatures that week! They enjoyed themselves and would recommend this to anyone needing a small home to stay in for a few days.

First impression was not good as the weeds up front nearly blocked the view of the house. The upper level of the back area was all weeds and dead trees. Although the back yard is fenced, there is no grass area for a dog. Of the three plastic chairs out front, two were cracked. Living room furniture was new. The houses are very close together and next door they were constantly working on something outside so we were unable to enjoy too much time outside. The view from the front porch is very nice. The location of the property to downtown and highways was great. There is a hiking trail very close by that overlooks the city. Overall, it was sufficient for our needs.

College town

  • 3 of 5

We drove up from Austin, TX for a little getaway in Colorado. We've never been to Golden before and decided it would be a quaint little town to stay in. The cottage was small, but appropriate for only two people. We brought two large dogs with us and figured they would have room in the "yard." The yard consisted of less than a patch of grass, a mess of dead thorny branches, and rocks. The fences on either side do not allow for privacy. We had no idea that the cottage was in between college apartments. I was unaware of Golden being a college town. The college was also having a bar-crawl in downtown Golden as well. We planned on using the fire pit outside but the yard was poorly maintained so piles of leaves on the patio made it a little unsafe to start a fire. A note to management would be: laundry was left in the dryer, the fan in the bedroom needs to be replaced, the coffee pot had mold in it from grounds that were left over by previous renters, the bedroom window was missing a screen (which we didn't find out until insects were in the room), also the bathroom sink faucet leaks. All in all the area was pleasant to go for a hike and check out charming downtown Golden. We were just a bit disappointed with our rental.

Owner's Response: Thank you for your review. We are sorry that we could not earn 5 stars. Our maids and management company usually catch the coffee pot issues, but we may have missed that. Apologies. The screen for the window is on order and should be installed soon. We will fix the drip in the faucet. Starting this summer we have a lawn crew doing yard clean up every other week. It is a quaint back yard, and not much room for pet curbing but there is a little space. The front yard is all landscape beds and the rose bushes do have thorns. I must correct one comment because there are not apartments on either side of the house. They are single family residences. There are no neighbors in the back, it's open space. Thank you for taking in the wonderful views and great location. Thank you! UPDATE: Screen located early May '18 and reset, Ceiling fan fixed in May '18.

Bright and sunny, great location and view, excellent gathering area for conversation, reading.

Colden View Cottage more than met our needs - three family members for a family get together for 4 days and nights. Beds comfortable, great shower with plenty of hot water, bright kitchen and gathering area with lots of sunlight and view. I think we were the first rental of the Spring season, so there were a few kinks to work out, but they were minor and didn't affect the visit. Rental agency was very responsive to answer questions. Lovely view at night lookin down on the length of Golden and the College campus. Small kitchen area with limited counter space and room for only three at the kitchen table - we moved the table to the living room for Easter dinner when we had four, We would certainly return for another visit. We give it 3 1/2 stars only because it was quite small, not because there was anything wrong.
