VIDEO TOUR 3rd Photo-- GRAND HOUSE (sleeps 6) and GUEST HOUSE (sleeps 4)
My son built this. Ever since he was a boy he had wanted to be writer. He read everything that Hemingway wrote. I guess he was as caught up in the legend of Ernest Hemingway—who the man was and how he lived his life—as much as he was moved by Hemmingway's crisp, efficient prose. Neil Young, for him, is to music what Hemingway is to American literature. As that young boy he insistently listened to Neil Young, began to write and dreamed one day of building a place in the mountains, on a peaceful lake in beautiful Maine.
Why Barbara chose Woodstock
He took his time. He searched to find that idyllic place that he had imagined. That’s how we found Shagg. It is a secluded paradise of green forest, on the shore of crystal clear-spring-fed water. The lake is nestled in a mountain valley. At the northern tip, the granite face of Bald Mountain rises up and reflects down upon the water. The moose… The loons… The massive trout… He built the grand house and a guest house and a large New England barn. I invite you and your loved ones to come share a get-away on the lake in Maine he used to dream about.
What makes this House unique
It’s difficult to decide which season I like best up on Shagg. Of course, Summer is amazing. I love to swim and fish and hike Bald Mountain. The views are breathtaking. I love the wild sounds just before dusk when loons are settling down for the day. Then I want to say Autumn because the lake is ablaze with vibrant color. The sky is that beautiful rich blue. And the air is cool, crisp, sprinkled with the scent of wood smoke. When I think of Winter, I think of stillness. Quiet. Deer tracks in the snow outside the door. Getting on a snowmobile under starlight chasing shadows along a mountain trail. Now that I think about it, what I like best is when someone like you writes in our guest book, “We had the best time together here.” Then you talk about how you made the mountains and the lake and the house yours. How this place will always be apart of you. How you will always be a part of it. That’s exactly the place I told you about. It’s that place my son dreamed of creating when he was a little boy.

Cry of the loons
Love listening to the loons satisfies the soul. Family and kids loved hiking and rowing to the raft daily. Kids enjoyed fishing for sunfish and bluegills right off the dock cook out at nights all around great time for all. Great blueberry picking.
It was amazing! I will definitely be going back
Thanks Lucy! We look forward to another visit in 2019.
A wonderful family vacation
My family rented both the main house and guest house. We had 5 adults and two young children.
Shagg Pond is gorgeous. a small pond with some beautiful views of the mountains. Unique to be on a pond with no motor boats. Just canoes and kayaks. Very peaceful. My 8 year old grandson was very eager to have a first fishing experience. He was thrilled to catch his first fish (a sunfish) off the dock. When the novelty of this wore off, his uncle brought him out to the deeper parts of the pond, where together they caught 3 nice-sized brook trout (the pond was stocked in May 2018). We made good use of the rowboat and canoes. We did not see the sailboat. The waterfront area in front of the main house is very scenic but not good for swimming. Very swampy with leeches. The adults did jump off the end of the dock into deeper water and had a good swim. There was no swim raft which was disappointing. The public beach area (which doubles as the boat ramp) was sandy and had a swim raft. Much better for children and we walked there a few times during the week. The pond has a milfoil problem but the beach area had been cleared and raked.
We saw and heard several loons including one chick which was amazing.
The Main house: a beautiful house. This is where we gathered and had meals and it was just wonderful. Lots of space, beautiful views of the pond, well-equipped kitchen, big living and dining area. We loved it.
The guest house: also beautiful. There is an odor in this house. Possibly mold but most assuredly a very strong sulfur smell from the water (we did not experience this at the main house). If this had been the only house we had rented, it would have been more of an issue for us.
The general area: This is a remote pond, about a half an hour to a good grocery store. A couple of smaller stores about 15 minutes down some dirt roads. A ten minute walk from the rental is the trail-head for a hike up the mountains one can see from the lake. Spectacular with a truly gorgeous mountain pond about 1/2 hour up the trail. This small pond is over 60 feet deep in places and is also stocked with trout (we didn't catch any) but we did swim (a few leaches) and had a great time.
The owners: very responsive whenever I called or e-mailed. Had a great, friendly conversation with owner's son. They were gracious about allowing us to check in early.
Overall: I recommend but know what to expect: all the pluses and minuses of a small remote Maine pond.
Thank you, Fred! I know you guys had a great time up on the Pond. It is truly a beautiful spot. I'm sure your grandson will always remember your vacation together and catching his first trout. Look forward to seeing you again.
Step back in a simpler time
If your looking for quiet, relaxing, family time then this is the place for you! You can show your children how much simpler living was ! No beeping when the microwave is done, no clothes dryer, no fancy master “suite “, no dishwasher or garbage disposal! Card playing, game playing, wildlife viewing, sound of the loon family is all we heard! Make sure you bring plenty of food because the nearest store is a hike! Bring plenty of quarters for the laundermat as the washer is retro 1970’s? and the clothes come out soaked! We had rain during the week so outdoor drying was not happening! Yankee injunity,we hung clothes on the drying rack and put our fan on them to dry! Our daughters and grandchildren loved canoeing and fishing off the dock! We have made so many memories here and funny stories to tell , seat breaking in the canoe and my daughter ending up on the floor laughing like crazy! She wasn’t hurt, only her pride! Sitting on the tremendous porch sipping on a glass of wine and listening to the family trade stories, priceless! It was a fun week and one we will talk about at get togethers for years to come! 😊
Donna, your description of your experience up on the Pond expressed what so many of our other visitors and my family have described. It is a step back into a more serine, relaxed time when family, friends and simply living in the moment was everything that mattered. Unfortunately, this is a life experience that so many young people have never had. There is so much noise in the world today. Up on the Pond when you lay in bed and hear the haunting call of a loon-- wake up to a moose wading at the shoreline-- the noise and stress of the outside world fades away.
We have a professional couple from New Jersey who book two weeks every year in advance. They are such wonderful people who have made the Pond their Summer home. So many times when we have spoken they have contrasted their busy life in New Jersey to the time they get to share together in Maine. So many memories...
Relaxing Paradise part 1
Clean. Complete Solitude. Exceptional Relaxation. It is impossible to put into the right words just how spectacular the Grand House is. Pictures can't either.
The description of the property is as advertised. No surprises. Everything was clean. Everything was in perfect working condition. The pictures were not outdated. Our stay was for one week. We always bring food for a week and eat in, and in fact never left the property until we ran out of coffee on our fifth day. Washing machine worked. Clothes line for drying outside in a sunny area. Large microwave. Stove and oven was gas, not electric. Plenty of pots and pans for all types of cooking. Good counterspace and overall kitchen layout. Glassware for all types of drinks, too. Fridge and freezer large like at home. Table in kitchen sat 4 or the table in the dining room for a more formal dinner.
The single floor house was ideal for us. Quiet ceiling fans kept us not feeling the 85-90 degree heat during our week. Nights were cool as expected. We often commented that whoever designed the Grand House must have known what they were doing. The porch was the feature, looking out into the pond. As we entered the house, a sense of "can you believe it" overcame us as we saw the view, realized the privacy and felt the homeyness. The openness of the kitchen invited conversation and comfort. The outdoor deck with grill was not shaded, and provided the perfect place to get a suntan or eat outdoors. The bedrooms were decorated in fitting with the house. The bathroom was all it needed to be as we never came close to running out of hot water and the shower pressure was ideal. Chairs were always comfortable. Lighting was exceptional, especially natural lightening. Even the bathroom had natural lightening. Sliding doors in each bedroom. Outlets in good places for phones, tablets, etc.. The places where we spent our time were designed so the view was always in sight: kitchen, bedroom, and porch. "Open" bar stool area between kitchen and dining / family room made it so it did not seem like separate rooms, but we were together at all times. Wifi worked well, and needed to be unplugged to reset. We never turned on the TV. Cell service (Verizion) was only needed once and worked only on the dock.
.. continued ..
The best vacation we have had in years!!!!!!!!!!!!!
We rented both the Grand House and the Guest House for our family. The houses were perfect-pine, stone, sunken living room, decks, windows everywhere and views. Even internet service, HBO Etc. But we didn't watch a lot of TV. We swam and sat by a campfire on the shore at night. There are boats and canoes. We climbed Bald Mountain with its spectacular views. But most of all it was so darn relaxing. We did go to the Oxford Casino one night and won $500. That was just a small bonus compared the wonderful family vacation we had in Maine. Thank you for the memories. We are definitely coming back. And our friends are also renting the Guest House in 2016.
Congratulations on your winnings! Thank you or saying such nice things about our homes. Well see you again.
Each season on the pond is a truly unique experience. In Summer, swim crystal clear water; enjoy virgin trout fishing just outside your door; sail or canoe on the pond; breathe in the view before an evening cookout. Autumn on the pond is breathtaking! A blaze of color reflects upon the mirrored surface on the pond. It's a perfect time for hiking, mountain biking, some late golf or trout fishing. Spectacular photography. What about winter? There's Sunday River and Mt. Abram. It's a snowmobilers paradise! Sled from your door across miles of Maine's system. Build a bonfire, make hot chocolate and skate in the shadow of the mountains around the pond. Snowshoe, cross-country ski a winter wonderland, or just cozy beside the fireplace with someone special and enjoy the quiet of the winter woods.
Other Activities: Snowmobile Trail outside your door Skating on the pond.
Ski: We are 20 minute away from MT Abram, ski area.
