After owning a holiday home in this region for a few years we decided to move on to bigger and better things here in Burgundy. Our search began and it wasn't long before we came across The Old Cafe deserted, run-down and completely overgrown with trees and shrubs. The gite was originally the farmhouse on the plot and was only opened up at Christmas for family get togethers, when the village cafe closed the house fell into disrepair and stood empty for many years. We moved here in 2005 and have completely restored the property and grounds into a comfortable and homely place for your enjoyment. We have also converted the old cow barn into a home for ourselves and live on-site all year round we are always on hand to offer guests help and advice and endeavour to remain in the background so that guests are not unduly disturbed during their holiday.
After living here in Burgundy for many years we have learnt through experience what best makes the property and grounds work, our aim has been to make the property as comfortable as possible without ruining its charm. We have made it easy for you to move around the grounds with ease and several seating area have been created for your enjoyment be it soaking up the sun by the pool or reading a good book in one of our more shady areas the choice is yours. The property is well laid out and suitable for families, couples or friends travelling together. The kitchen is well equipped and a you will find a BBQ on your terrace for those Al fresco dinners, a large dining room will allow all the family to sit round the table and talk about their holiday adventures and when you retire to bed there is a choice of two double rooms and a comfortable twin with full size single beds .
Gigny is situated between the wine regions of Champagne and Chablis and both are accessible within a 30 minute drive of the property. There are many wine and champagne caves open for you to visit and to try before you buy. Both regions are set in beautiful countryside and well worth a visit. Just a short drive away are the Chateaux of Ancy le Franc and Tanlay and no day out would be complete without a visit to the Abbey de Fonteney. The historic towns of Dijon and Beaune are bursting with history and their architectural buildings are a must for old and young alike. A train service to Paris runs from Montbard and for families travelling with children Disneyland Paris is a couple of hours away. The smaller but closer Nigloland is well worth a visit with rides to suit all ages and the Lac D'Orient with its lakes and man-made beaches is a fun day out for everyone. If adventure isn't for you then the gite will offer you a quiet relaxing holiday where you can rest and let the rest of the world go by. There is a woodland playground for the little ones, where you can sit and relax with a book away from the hot Burgundy sun.
We can advise you on whatever your needs are and there are a wealth of maps and local information in the gite for your use. This is an ideal property for couples or families. Well behaved pets are welcome. Pool open June- September
despite the disappointing weather, we have enjoyed our stay and the gite has been a comfortable home away from home. Thank you Julie and Paul fir making us do welcome, we won't hesitate to return and recommend family friends
We really liked our stay in the Old Cafe! The house is very spacious, with a living/dining area, a cosy sitting room for the evenings and a seperate kitchen. Also the rooms upstairs have a really good size. In every room it is possible to fit an extra bed or cot without any problem. All the house is very nice decoreated as well! The garden is a real children's Paradise! Our little ones from 2,5y and 3y enjoyed the back garden a lot, with the swings, the little bikes, the treehouse and the trampoline. Everywhere Julie and Paul created sitting areas. We even used twice the swimming pool during our stay (yes, even so late in the season)! The pool is also very nice and has a good size. Also the environment of the Old Café offers a lot for everyone. After every corner a new splendid view and a cute little village! We visited some wine caves to taste and buy Chablis (just ring at the door), loved the medieval villages of Flavigny-sur-Serein (anis candy!) and Noyers, visited the splendid properties of Abbay de Fontenay and Tanlay chateau and had good times visiting Auxerre, Chatillon-sur-Seine and Tonnere. The restaurants in the region all offer very nice lunch menus at incredible prices (13/15 euro for a set 3 course menu). We loved Le Maronnier in Buffon, La Grange (Flavigny) and La crêperie du Port (Tanlay). Also very nice restaurants in Noyer! The bakery in Laignes is not bad at all for morning bread. For something special, try the bakery "la tentation" in Tonnerre. Overall, we are very satisfied with our stay in the Old Cafe and are certainly thinking of coming back. One tip: if the washing machine in the kitchen would be replaced by a dishwasher, the kitchen would be perfect :)
We had a good time in Gigny, the weather was great so we could really enjoy the outsides.
The house was clean and lovely furnished The countryside all around is really quiet.
We went to cardoland (1hour drive) to see the dinosaurs, but mainly stayed at home the other day, just relaxing.
The kids really enjoyed the playground. They played a lot in the little house as we could rest and read quietly in the sunshine in the meantime. So this was perfect!
They also enjoyed the chicken and the eggs were delicious.
Thanks for everything !

Comfortably furnished & well equipped gite. We were made to feel very welcome by Julie & Paul. Amazing welcome pack on arrival. Despite the terrible weather we enjoyed our stay in this beautiful part of France & look forward to a return visit.
We had such a great holiday... the kids thoroughly enjoyed the pool, the playhouse, the garden & the chickens! The holiday cottage was a fantastic size...lots of space for our large family. Fresh eggs and veggies from the owners were very appreciated along with a yummy welcome basket. Thankyou for a great stay...see you again!
We had such a wonderful time. The House, the garden, the pool and the game-room was fantastic. Julie and Paul always kindly and helpfull (even when we didn't understand every word they tried to explain it to us...) We liked to travel aroud like Noyer, Auxerre and Paris... In the evening we could have a swim and then a Barbecue. The gite has all the confort and it is decorated very lovely. For all of us it was perfect. Thank you again, Julie and Paul, for this wonderful time.
