Overview

About the property

The Nellie Donangan House was built in 1912 and added to in 1978. It is thoroughly modern on the inside yet retains its last-century charm. From the spacious front porch guests can sit and watch the deer graze in the undeveloped fields and wetlands while hummingbirds buzz close and red winged blackbirds sing their musical song.

The kitchen is modern and fully stocked with culinary appliances, more of which are stored in the spacious pantry. The pantry has a washer and dryer, a utility sink, and can act as a mudroom with access to the house from the back yard.

The dining room seats 6 comfortably and 8 a little closer and has a large picture window with a view of the fields. The living room has a comfortable sleeper sofa in the bay window, which looks out, through a stained glass panel, to one of the gardens.

The master bedroom has a queen bed and dressing area with a dresser and double closets. The master bath has a shower. A private, enclosed deck is accessed from the master bedroom and has a door to the backyard. The other bedroom has two twin beds, a dresser and a closet. The hall bath has a bathtub.

The office has a desk and table and provides a quiet, private place to catch up on business or keep current while on vacation. There is high-speed, 100Mbps internet for streaming movies, skyping and lightning fast browsing.

A charming gazebo holds yard appliances and tools while an outbuilding we call The Dollhouse acts as a workshop for a local Renaissance tent maker on the first floor. The second floor, accessed through a steep stair and a trap door (not suitable for children), offers a calm and peaceful place for uninterupted reading and writing.

There is a fenced, deer-proof garden and ample parking. The overall feeling is of comfortable country living and serenity.

The Neighborhood of North Beach is charming, quirky, between the house and North Beach itself and full of walking paths through woods and between streets. North Beach and Chinese Gardens are a 10 minute walk away and the many trails through Fort Warden are just beyond that. The Fairgrounds are across the fields to the south, and Port Townsend’s Historic Seaport District is a 10 minute ride by car or just a little longer by bicycle.

About Jennifer Severin

The Nellie Donagan House is our home.

We travel extensively for business and pleasure and are pleased to be able to share our home with you.

The art displayed throughout the house was created and collected primarily by my mother and me.

My mother, Hilary, was an artist working mostly in textiles and ceramics. She spent her entire life collecting art and a portion of her created and collecting art is displayed in our home.

I collect tapestry and weavings primarily, some of which is also displayed in the house.

Why Jennifer Severin chose Port Townsend

The Nellie Donagan House was the result of a search for the proper home in the Port Townsend area, a place that I’ve always wanted to live.

Early twentieth century homes have been a particular interest to mer. The home, the site, grounds and out buildings made the Nellie Donagan House the right house.

The two-story Doll House in the back of the property will eventually house more art and become a place for reading and quiet entertainment.

The upstairs office is a favorite place for quiet morning reading and writing.

The house was amazing.

  • 5 of 5

The house we stayed in was beautiful. The beds were very comfortable, all the rooms decorated very nicely. It was easy access to the water and walking distance to Fort Worden. We really hated to leave.

Quiet, pretty setting, roomy house, walkable neighborhood

  • 5 of 5

We spent a month here in June, and really liked the house. It's nicely decorated, well equipped, and roomy. The neighborhood has a semi-rural feel, and was very quiet. The house is a short walk to North Beach, where you can walk for miles along the Strait of Juan de Fuca. It's also a short walk to Fort Worden, which is full of great walking trails, and has a nice pub called Taps and an excellent restaurant called Reveille. We often biked to downtown Port Townsend, which is a wonderful, charming town.

Prepare to Relax!

  • 5 of 5

We loved our stay in this enchanted spot that's just a walk away from the park and beach along the Strait of Juan de Fuca and Fort Worden's walking trails. Also many trail heads to catch just a few steps away from the front door! Very comfortable accommodations with everything you need for up to two couples or a 3rd couple that wouldn't mind sleeping in the living room on a futon. Gourmet kitchen with everything you need to prepare your own meals. We would love to stay there again!

Visitors to Port Townsend love the 19th century downtown, a two mile drive, a fifteen-minute bike ride, or 40-minute walk. We ride bikes and walk everywhere.

North Beach and Port Townsend in general is a web of walking trails. Maps are available from the city, but we find it more fun to discover trails as we walk.

For boat fans, Port Townsend is the place. The city owns two marinas and the Boat Haven boat/ship yard which is a fifteen minute bike ride, open to the public and always full of boats and ships of every type, in the water and "on the hard."

In September, the Northwest Maritime Center hosts the Wooden Boat Festival when the Point Hudson marina is turned over to literally hundreds of new and classic wooden boats.

For entertainment, the city is a hub of entertainment with remarkably talented street musicians busking for tips, live theatre from the Key City Theatre Company, which hosts a summer Shakespeare festival, and the remarkable Rose Theatre showing classic, special interest, first run films, and film series. Be certain to watch a movie in the upstairs viewing and dining venue, The Starlight Room.

Dining is one of Port Townsend's attractions. Many restaurants have a water view. Back from the waterfront are local staples and new arrivals as the city grows in diversity. High Tea is now available at Pippa’s Real Tea for example.

From May until September the Saturday farmers’ market is wonderful with local produce, baked and prepared food and other crafts and products. It reminds us of the open-air markets we’ve seen in Europe.

Port Townsend lends itself to activities of all sorts, especially in the summer months.

Walking and bicycle riding are the methods we enjoy most for getting around. When we go to Seattle, we leave our car at the Haines Place Park and Ride and take the bus and Ferry to downtown Seattle. It is 2-1/2 hours by mass transit and 2-1/4 hours by car. At $23 round trip, it’s a heck of deal. (A brochure from the city with bus time is in the drawer next to the fridge ;-) )

For flyers, Jefferson County International Airport is roughly four miles southwest of Port Townsend, and sports US Customs and a 3,000 foot east-west runway. Four companies provide charter service.

Port Townsend is our home. We love the city and the area.

(So why aren’t we here, if we love the area so much? We’re sailing to Alaska for five months. Otherwise, we’d be here for the glorious summer and all of the attractions, facilities and people that brought us here.)
