Overview

About the property

Charming 2 bedroom cottage. Secluded location yet only 40 min from Reykjavík

Our cottage is located in West Iceland which is a peaceful place in the countryside and only 40 min drive from Reykjavík City Centre.

This cottage was built by our family and is renovated to a high standard, ensuring excellent levels of comfort for our guests. You will find this beautiful cottage both spacious and comfortable.

The cottage has two bedrooms. 1 provides sleeping accommodation for 2 people, the other for 3. There is a wardrobe in each bedroom and every bed is brand new and of high quality. The bathroom has a nice shower. The kitchen and the living room are open plan, giving the cottage a bright and spacious feel. All common kitchen utensils are in the kitchen including a fridge, freezer, toaster and coffee maker for the convenience of our guests. In the living room there is a sofa, a TV and a beautiful old fashioned wood stove. The windows are large, allowing plenty of natural light to saturate the living space. These gorgeous windows provide a spectacular view as they are overlooking a lake, fjord and a circle of mountains.

The wooden deck outside the cottage is large so you can catch the sun all day and also enjoy the midnight sun in the summertime. Garden furniture is provided, six garden chairs and a table, also sofas and a little sofatable. We also have an outdoor gas grill our guests can use.

In a little shed next to the cottage there is a washing machine and during the summertime, guests can use it, laundry soap is provided.

The cottage is located on the edge of a little hill, overlooking lake Eiðisvatn, fjord Hvalfjörður and the spectacular mountains surrounding the fjord. A charming little garden surrounds the cottage and at the back of the house you will find a grove, consisting mainly of Icelandic birch trees.

Our daughter-in-law keeps her Icelandic horses just a short walk from the cottage and in the spring time you can see little foals with their mothers.

Although the view is wonderful, you can’t help but notice an aluminium plant a few kilometres away. This has never bothered us and we just love spending time in the cottage and the surrounding area. In fact, we like this place so much that we decided to build our own house next to the cottage. This means we are always on hand to help you should you need us!

About Adda & Sigurjón

Our names are Adda and Sigurjón. We are from a little town called Akranes, not far away from the cottage. The land our cottage is build on has belonged to Sigurjón's family for generations so we have always had strong ties towards this beautiful place.

Adda & Sigurjón purchased this cottage in 1986

Why Adda & Sigurjón chose West

Sigurjón's Aunt and her husband build a little shed where the cottage is now and started to plant trees all around it. The trees are now tall and pretty, giving precious shelter from winds.

As the time passed, previous owners were unable to visit their little piece of land, and in 1986, they passed it on to us, as we were looking for a place to build a little summerhouse for our family.

Right away we started building an extension to the shed and through the years we have extended and improved our cottage. But still you can see a part of the original little shed in the living room and kitchen area.

What makes this cottage unique

Our cottage is ideally located for active people who want to enjoy the comfort of staying in one place, while being able to see various places of beautiful Icelandic nature, as well as being close to the city's culture.

Only one and a half kilometer away form highway 1, countless spectacular places can be visited.

Warm, cozy cottage overlooking a lake and great aurora viewing location.

  • 5 of 5

The cottage is in a great location for viewing the northern lights. It is situated in the south-west of the island which has the least cloudiest sky. Being rural it does not suffer from the light pollution of towns such as Reykjavik. We visited during a new moon period when the sky was totally dark from 7pm to 7.30am. Saw the aurora five out of seven nights. The last night was the best with fifty per cent of the sky covered.

Adda, Sigurjon and Jonella were very helpful with useful advice and a warm welcome. The cottage is situated in a small hamlet overlooking a frozen lake. It has all mod cons, two bedrooms and a very high standard of furnishings and cleanliness. The outside temperature was mostly below freezing but the cottage was always warm. Supermarkets can be found 15 minutes away in the coastal town of Akranes. There is plenty to see in this corner of Iceland and we thoroughly recommend a visit.

Comfortable, cozy cottage with lovely views.

  • 5 of 5

Had a wonderful time visiting the area and it was nice to come home to the cottage in the evening and relax. Was clean and well kept with gorgeous views. Comfortable for 4 easily, 5 if they are in the top bunk style bed. The owners were warm and welcoming and everything was as described. Had a bit of a time finding it but that was only because we were taking in the views and missed the turn off to the road. The town of Akranes is only about a 10 minute drive away and we would shop there for whatever we needed. I would recommend this rental.

Very cosy and well equipped cottage with beautiful views across fjord.

  • 5 of 5

The cottage was very well equipped, particularly the kitchen with nice touches like including tea towels, washing up liquid etc. The location was quiet with lovely views. The children enjoyed running around outside and watching the ponies in the field below.

The location was convenient for Borgannes, Into the Glacier trip at Husafell and did the Golden Circle from here.

We didn't meet the owners as they were on holiday themselves but we really aprreciated their attention to detail to make our stay comfortable.

Excellent spot for a family- we were here with kids age 6 and 8. Scenic views of gorgeous Icelandic mountains, lake, and horses. Hosts were extremely friendly and close by in case we needed anything. Location was great for Golden Circle drive, Reykjavik, Western Iceland, etc. Excellent!

Very friendly owners, beautiful place!!!!!

  • 5 of 5

Dear Adda, Sigurjón and Jónella! Thank you so much for making us feel like we are visiting the family. You all are very nice! The cottage is wonderful and location is superb. The only downside was that we did not have enough time to really appreciate the cottage: traveled long hrs to see the wonders of Iceland. We are planning to come back in a year or so and will ask for your hospitality again.

The town Borgarnes is only 15 min away and the town Akranes is only 10 min away. There you will find all necessary services: Medical service, Supermarkets, Gas stations, Restaurants, Banks, Pharmacy, Liquor store, Museum, Golf Course, etc. There are many public pools with hot tubs in the area. Try the ones in Akranes and Borgarnes! Ideal to visit after a busy day of activity in this beautiful area.
