A restored farming cottage in rural Charente with exposed beams and stonework. It has been sympathetically restored with country kitchen, an adjacent lounge area, a further small lounge and 3 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms. The third bedroom is an occasional bedroom with a double sofa bed. A substantial courtyard garden is enclosed by a double story barn and has an attractive covered barbeque area. The house is south facing so the courtyard is always in sun. Children are particularly welcome with many facilities provided - beds, toys etc including a plunge pool.
An orchard garden with fruit trees and grape vines is directly opposite with swings, a slide and the plunge pool.
The surrounding area is characteristic rural France with beautiful scenery and an abundance of lanes and footpaths to walk and cycle. A very friendly cafe/ bar ( Chez David) can be found 2kms away in the village of Villefagnan. You will find David truly welcoming, as is the whole family. In this village you will find 2 Boulangeries and a Charcuterie all of the highest calibre.
Internet access is available so bring your laptop with wifi.
There are many local towns and villages where you can indulge your love of French culture with their markets, food, churches etc. The stunning local villages of Verteuil and Tusson with their attendant château and winding streets are particularly recommended.
The property is exactly 143 years old and was build during the Franco Prussian wars in 1869. An inscription on one of the window reveals confirms this.. The house comprises an open plan kitchen/dinner/lounge area with access to the courtyard, a further sitting room/office, 2 bedrooms and a third occasional bedroom. There is a bathroom, a shower room and a separate downstairs WC. All have been finished to a high standard. A mainly IKEA kitchen compliments the open plan area with its wood burning stove. The house is south facing and thus bathed in sunshine during the summer period.
If you are a wildlife lover then this is the place for you. Birds of prey. Buzzards , Hen Harriers and Owls are regularly seen.
A large gas barbecue adjacent to the house in the open barn ensures that weather will not prevent your daily al fresco meal.
I am 65 years old and retired. Originally from South London. I now divide my time between the Test Valley in England and the Charente. My 3 children and 6 grandchildren love my French property for its charm and facilities offered.
Whilst in France I spend my time enhancing the property and trying to learn the language.
I am a born again student, currently in the 4th year of a History degree. Raix is a great place to study.
Richard purchased this house in 2011
I spend probably 6 months each year in this property. It is a comfortable and inviting home as well as a holiday rental. I take pride in this property and feel sure tenants will appreciate its undoubted charms.
I discovered the area 10 years ago whilst visiting friends nearby Mansle. I decided to buy because I was charmed by the Charente and its people who really are most friendly, contrary to customary British thinking. The calm offered by the French countryside and its plethora of inviting villages means that I am committed to the Charente.
The house is stone built with many exposed beams. All internal and external walls are exposed stone or ' pierre apparente ' as is termed here.. This cosy village home underwent complete renovation with much attention to detail and consideration for authentic features in order to greet a family. The house is close to the village centre which contains a 12th century church and a small Chateau which served as the judicial administrative centre for the area during the middle ages.
Thank you for your email. We were very pleased with our stay. We appreciated that we were staying in someone's home, and it was very well equipped with everything we needed. The pool was a particular asset for children (and adults) - after a hot day in the car we were able to cool down. Yes, we did find it value for money. We enjoyed the facility of the bikes and being able to cycle locally. There was lots to do nearby and a little further away - we enjoyed simple things like visiting Villefagnan (impressed with the charcuterie and the baguette machine at the garage!), and we enjoyed pizzas at the lake on a couple of evenings - great! We enjoyed visiting places only a few kilometres away like Tusson (the stained glass maker, and Margaret of Angouleme's house), Verteuil (great lunch at the mill), and Rejallant - river bathing and canoes. Further afield, we enjoyed several visits to Angouleme (walking round the old town and ramparts and shopping, and visiting the musee de la bande desinee, and the plan d'eau Grand Prairie for swimming and canoes. Best wishesDavid
Me, my husband, mother and our dog really had a fantastic holiday at Raix. It was exactly what we were looking for. Back to the peaceful, beautiful and quiet countryside of France.... The house is well renovated with all luxury available to make stay very convenient. Location of the house in the village is great and we loved the garden & terrace..... spent almost all days outside from early morning till late in the evening. Close to Raix you will find characteristic French villages where you can find bakery, super markets and some good restaurants. Angoulême is easy to reach from Raix and is a beatiful and modern city, Cognac is also closeby and easy to reach by car.
We still miss Raix every day !!!!!
This is a delightful property in a charming village in the middle of delightful countryside. The property is well equipped, in excellent order and, in addition to ample room inside (with log fires) has a really pretty and large, sunny courtyard with table, chairs and huge parasol which becomes the central focus of most meals. The orchard offers a small upstanding swimming pool (is perfect for little children). Pretty walks and wonderful bike rides abound, all flanked by wildflowers. Each village boasts a quaint village church. These are well worth looking at for their embodied history - their walls ooze character. There is also a nearby lake with open air swimming and a tasty little pizza cafe on its shore. The region is genuinely atmospheric. Local towns and villages offer the most charming little cafes and restaurants. The owner was most helpful beforehand and the cleaner is near should there be a need. Both the property and the surrounding countryside genuinely represent the best of unspoilt French culture and offer perfect relaxation. The property is highly recommended and I would return here without hesitation.
The cottage didn't disappoint in any way. Historic, yet has all the modern conveniences we've grown to rely on. The location was perfect with small towns a stones throw away which had everything one needs in the shopping, eating and sightseeing department.
The courtyard was a wonderful place to relax and enjoy the weather, while the cottage itself was cool and comfortable.
I won't hesitate to recommend this lovely place to anyone and hope I can return.
We really enjoyed our stay in Raix. The property was very simply and tastefully renovated, with everything you could possibly want whilst on holiday. It was very clean and well maintained, and the local (English) lady was really welcoming and helpful, leaving some much needed provisions upon our arrival. The customer service and communication from the owner was second to none and he had kindly left some information leaflets specifically geared to our stay along with the usual local area and regional information/maps etc. The facilities were great and it was just a short car ride to the local Boulangerie and supermarket for provisions, and we found it to be a really good base for exploring the region.
I would have no hesitation in recommending this property to those who want a quiet rural location that is within easy driving distance of plenty of busier, larger towns and attractions.
This really was a fantastic place to relax as a family.
Secluded orchard, swimming pool, private courtyard, character stone cottage, good bathroom facilities, beautiful bedrooms , great for kids with swings and slide.
We ate outside every evening using the large barbeque under cover of the ancient barn.
Lovely area , great cycling with bikes provided.
Fantastic lake for fresh water swimming in next village 1
We very much enjoyed our stay in Raix - the cottage is very well stocked with all amenities making it very comfortable. We enjoyed exploring the local area as well as Cognac and La Rochelle which are easy day trips by car. One downside is that there isn't any local shops in Raix everything is a drive away.
Overall a great place for a holiday and to relax!
The house is situated in a village named Raix in rural Charente. The village has about 50 houses and a population of circa 200. It contains a 12th century church and also a chateau that served as a judicial centre in the middle ages. The chateau faces the champ de foire - where all village activities are held, including brocants and vide-greniers. Also adjacent is a feature of the village called La Mare which is a natural pond that fills up during the winter. The village it is surrounded by countryside which is ideal for walking or cycling using a network of roads and pathways.
There really are things for all tastes. An absolute must for the kids is Vallee des Singes (Monkey valley) a delight for children and adults alike - about 45 minutes drive. Also crocodile world which you might have guessed features a number of crocs - lovely!
For the more serious minded there is the national memorial for the resistance to be found in Chassenieul.
Nearer are the picturesque villages of Verteuil and Tusson which you can explore at leisure including the local cafés.
If you have a scientific leaning, Futuroscope at Poitier is superb. Many exhibits for the kids and adults. You would need 2 days to do the whole place but highly recommended.
Also if you want somewhere to really reflect then go to Orador sur Glane, a national memorial. Its a perfectly preserved village the scene of a massacre during the final stages of WW2. Deeply moving - about 1 hours drive.
The Medieval old town of Angouleme is beautiful with its winding streets and restaurants is about 30 minutes drive.. Also Cognac is about 45 minutes drive.
