Overview

About the property

Near Florence & Siena, Sleeps 8, Views of Chianti hills, idyllic outdoor areas

Featured in 'Architectural Digest' magazine, this outstanding country house with attached former church is protected by the Italian Ministry for Culture for its historic and cultural significance, sleeps 8. Set in the idyllic Chianti countryside between Florence (c.26km) and Siena (c.40km). The pretty market town of Greve-in-Chianti, with a wide range of shops, cafés and restaurants, is just 3km away.

A former church, with medieval origins, and attached stone villa, have recently been converted by a leading Italian architect and featured in Architectural Digest magazine. They sit at the heart of a tiny and ancient 'castello' (a fortified castle-hamlet), surrounded by vineyards, olive groves, woodland and open fields. The house enjoys serene vistas all around, stretching to the Apuan Alps 70 miles away. Leonardo da Vinci was inspired by the scenery here in his landscape painting.

The house is far more than just a rental property: it is a home, lovingly decorated by skilled Italian fresco artists, furnished with a stylish mix of antique and contemporary pieces collected from our travels all over the world. There are hand-painted Italian ceramics, hand-made glass, local wood and wicker work, the latest in Italian design bathrooms - beautiful objects that reflect a life well lived. The rooms are filled with flowers, fragrant soaps, books, CDs, sheet music, board games, films...and other simple pleasures to reflect 'la dolce vita'. There is an 1885 Bluthner grand piano in the main sitting room. Regrettably, the property is not suitable for children under 6 or those with mobility disabilities.

The cultural sites of Florence, Siena, San Gimignano, Monteriggioni, Montepulciano, Greve and the Chianti hill towns, medieval castles and wine estates are all nearby.

There are lovely outdoor swimming pools at Greve & seven interconnected pools at Quercegrossa.

Around the house are beautiful and extensive walking trails.

The area is very popular with cyclists and many itineraries are available.

Chianti is known for its outstanding wines and fine local cuisine.

House: 330sq.metres (total), on 2 main levels plus taverna.

Ground floor:

Impressive main sitting room in former church, leads to lovely covered loggia outside;

1 study-bedroom with double sofa-bed; shower room/toilet;

Second lounge/dining room (with table for 6), double doors to courtyard garden;

Farmhouse kitchen with large open fireplace, dishwasher, microwave;

Utility room (washing machine, dryer); guest toilet;

Lower ground:

Large taverna, with wine racks and dining table for 8;

First floor:

2 double bedrooms, 1 with en-suite shower room,

1 twin bedroom; guest bathroom (with shower).

Outside:

In addition to the courtyard garden, there is a covered loggia for sitting outside, and a few minutes walk around vineyards takes you to the property’s field with fruit frees (suitable for ball games, etc.) and hillside woodland.

About Convertoie Bookings

The owner speaks English, Italian, some French, and has lived in Italy for many years.

Convertoie Bookings purchased this villa in 2011

Why Convertoie Bookings chose Greve in Chianti

The extensive views here (reaching to the Apuan Alps 70km away) inspired Leonardo da Vinci's landscapes. The setting is idyllic and timeless, the light ever-changing, each season with its magic. The house, being a former church and canonic with medieval origins, is architecturally stunning and historic, yet with all mod cons. The place combines utter peace and tranquillity with easy access to some of the greatest cultural sites in the world.

What makes this villa unique

Views and idyllic Chianti landscape, architectural features, stylish and high-quality decor, some of the best wines in Europe and great Tuscan food a stone's throw a way. Florence, Siena, art, history... What's not to like?

Guestbook comments from the owner

The property of the villa was breathtaking. Situated amongst typical Tuscan scenery in a historically significant location, Le Convertoie was a pleasure to stay at. We had a wonderful time waking up to the early calls of the roosters and finishing each day sipping the local wine! The location was splendid, for any Tuscan destination was short car ride away. Greve-in-Chianti, was also nearby and provided a great home base for travel. Kate was an amazing host and made sure that we were most comfortable with her house! Our stay here was unforgettable and hopefully we can return soon!

Most beautiful vacation property ever!

  • 5 of 5

Our stay at Le Convertoie was absolutely the highlight of our month in Italy. The photos shown in the listing are very accurate but do not come close to being there in person and having the history and the beauty of the house and its' surroundings wash over you. The property was very well maintained, and the personal touches of the owner's wonderful antiques and books make it easy to imagine that you are living there in your own very well-loved home. My personal favorite day was a day I stayed behind alone while the others went into Florence. Working in the wonderful Tuscan kitchen and looking through the door across the gorgeous landscape was a dream come true. And strolling through the dining room doors onto the terrace and just sitting and watching the birds soar in the quiet of the landscape was bliss as I had never imagined. Another in our group, a professional musician, was transported every time he sat down at the grand piano in the wonderful acoustically live music room. His joy of spending any spare moment at the instrument was our joy in listening. Kate kindly helped us with printing tickets for the Duomo and even met us with them in Florence near the Duomo. They were both kind and helpful in walking us through the house when we arrived and pointing out how various features work. We all enjoyed drives through the countryside and visiting several of the other Chianti villages and the drives up to the tiny villages of Lamole, Volpaia and Vertine. I would absolutely recommend this property to anyone I know and I would go back again in a heartbeat, given the opportunity. Thank you so much, Kate and Francesco, for giving us memories like we've never made before.

Owner's Response: Dear Suzie, We were very touched and absolutely delighted to read your review. I am so glad that you all enjoyed your stay at Le Convertoie, and that you filled the place with music and warmth all the time you were there. Do please come back very soon - do some painting, play the piano, read the books, listen to music, and drink some more Chianti whilst soaking in the views! You would be the most welcome visitors. We're looking forward to it, and I will tune the piano for you! Our warmest wishes from Italy, Kate & Francesco

So good, we will be back again next year for our third stay 😊

  • 5 of 5

The second stay was even better than the first! We explored more of the hiking trails, enjoyed the serenity of the sunsets, and peaceful setting of Le Convertoie.

A day long walking tour with Kate of Florence was filled with many great hidden surprises, and Kate’s knowledge of the area is incredible.

Kate arranged an afternoon with Dario at Fattoria Tregole which Kate recommended, an entertaining afternoon with Dario’s storytelling and history of the area - and enjoyed the great food and wine of Fattoria Tregole. We also enjoyed a bike ride through the countryside with Luca, a great way to see the area.

The location is perfect for day trips to many great towns in the area.

Thanks again Kate and Francesco for allowing us this incredible experience again. We are already planning our visit next year 😁.

A little piece of heaven in the Chianti countryside

  • 5 of 5

I read every review and did endless research so if that’s not your thing - just book this one. Happy to confirm it is all the good things everyone has already written about it and a great value for a group of lucky friends/family.

This home is the centerpiece of several adjacent houses/apts in a “hamlet” called Le Convertoie in a supremely idyllic setting. As one should expect with such a venerable old beauty, its a bit quirky. There are a few shared walls with neighbors. But its pretty much your sweet Tuscany dream come true (omg the CHURCH in the house). And it’s owned by hosts that make a great thing better. We wisely followed many of their local suggestions to get the most out of the surrounding area.

Personal favorites: mornings in the gorgeous back garden, with VIEWS and Italian coffee and roosters and cuckoo birds. Ristorante Lamole for views + great food/service. La Cantina in Greve for casual dining - great pizza/pasta and so friendly. So many sweet little hilltop towns close by, like Volpaia and Montefioralle and Panzano (The Butcher Cecchini!). Zoe, the super sweet dog next door. Gaia and Victoria, the chefs who came to our house for a fun evening preparing fresh pasta dinner and leftovers for the week. Scenic hikes to work off all the FOOD.

Kate and Francesco, thank you so much for a memorable week in your little piece of heaven (hi to Zoe).

Truly Gorgeous Villa and Superlative Hostess (Villa Veramente Splendida e Hostess Superlativa)

  • 5 of 5

Le Convertoie surpassed our expectations in beauty and convenience. It is conveniently located in the countryside of Chianti near Greve. There are beautiful views at sunrise and sunset from the terraces of the villa, and paths for hiking in the country. Vineyards on the property produce excellent Chianti wine, which one can buy during a stay.

As an owner and hostess for the property, Kate greatly exceeded my expectations for assistance during our visit. Kate is fluent in both English and Italian. She provided a document of several pages on places to visit such as medieval castles and medieval towns, recommended restaurants, local tips such as for parking, and contacts for cooking lessons. Before and during our visit, we exchanged numerous emails on various topics such as where to rent a car in Florence as well as driving directions to avoid the limited traffic zones (and fines) in Florence. At one point, she was even able to recommend a massage therapist in Greve for a couple of members of our party with aching backs. I enthusiastically recommend Le Convertoie, and would be happy to stay there in the future. This review is repeated below in Italian.

When heaven meets earth!

  • 5 of 5

Lovely villa just outside Greve...the stunning living room with acoustics that pay homage to whatever you choose to listen to, thenpeaceful loggia with views of stone homes in the distance, the sound of the river nearby, the neighbors dogs who welcome your return after a day of touring. Comfortable beds and linens... the total package that makes leaving a melancholy experience. Loved every second!!!!

Absolutely Perfect!

  • 5 of 5

This villa was absolutely awesome. Firstly, the owners were VERY helpful, freindly, and approachable. You'll get an entire rundown of area towns and sites worth visiting. The kitchen is well-appointed, cozy, and his a history (the carved mantel stone is 1812 or thereabouts). From the kitchen you can enter the wine cellar, which is fantastic - cool, even older than the kitchen, and spotless; it's a perfect retreat from summer heat if you need it. From the kitchen you enter the dining room and what I would call a family room. We spent much of our time here just reading. These rooms exit onto a wonderful and well-furnished outdoor gravel patio with a view to die for across a small valley. The date on the stone block by the back door? 1752. The largest room is the living room, which used to be a chapel...one of the original buildings on this ridge (further along the ridge used to be a watchtower for what used to be a small hamlet). This living room is SPECTACULAR. A piano, nice furniture, soaring vaulted ceiling, big screen TV, and parts of the old church are still 'built in". To complete the first floor there is a library. And two bathrooms. Upstairs are three very nice bedrooms and two bathrooms. Do I have any negatives about this villa? No. I will offer one word of caution: like much of Tuscany/Italy there are lots of small level changes...many rooms have a step or two up or down when entering/exiting. Best not to drink too much and walk around in the dark! We love the place. Would we go back? Absolutely.
