Guestbook comments from the owner

This property is top notch in every way: spotless, immaculately presented, lovely decor, best quality linen and beds (how rare is that?), comfy sofas and chairs. Everything you could possibly need to cook and eat: inside or al fresco - be sure to take breakfast on the sunny terrace with its breathtaking views and pick some wild herbs for your barbecue.

Plenty for all ages (we spanned &&-76 years and 4 generations) but probably too cut off for teenagers unless they are happy to crash on the loungers by the superb pool, reading from the vast selection of books; or just squabble over board games or table tennis;.

If you can drag yourselg away from the house there's wonderful walking country, lakes, mountains and rural villages to explore; whilst the rivers provide excitement in the shape of kayaking and white water rafting.

Take a trip to Mirepoix market, Limoux and Carcassone of course, buy your bread and meat in the village, treat yourself to a meal at Gayda, not forgetting to taste and buy some Cremant and Blanquette de Limoux - our favourite is from Domaine Laurens (in village of la Digne d'Aval, just on the right off road when heading to Limoux)!

Petra and Jeremy are the charming owners of the exceptional property, maintaining a low profile but quietly keeping everything in order (early morning, daily pool cleaning); but do take time to chat to this lovely, interesting couple, who are sharing their beautiful home with you.

Would we recommend? absolutely!!!!

Outstanding, just perfect!

  • 5 of 5

We were warmly greeted by the owners and felt from the outset that nothing was too much trouble. The master bedroom is huge with an awesome view from the balcony. The château/house is as described but so much more with the hottest water anywhere we've been ( and we're well travelled!). If you want to get away from it all this is the place however, if you want a group holiday it's also ideal as it sleeps so many. We are thinking of returning for a group walking holiday. Lots of lovely French villages to potter around, not too far from.Carcassonne and for us, the spectacular views were what made it!

We loved it!!

  • 5 of 5

We stayed here with friends and had a great time and i will be coming back again with the children and grandchildren. The property is lovely, on a hillisde with fabulous views of very pretty countryside. The main rooms are large and comfortable, the bedrooms are big and handsome over 2 floors with bathrooms on each floor. Outside is fabulous - a large al fresco dining area, plenty of loungers and room around the pool, and a large beautiful pool. There is room to roam around the large grass lawn, and there are walks nearby.

In the area, there are lakes, caves, medieval towns, Cathar castles, cute villages

Location

Car: necessary

This lovely Maison de Maitre is situated on the borders of the Aude and Ariege and therefore on the cusp of the Languedoc and Midi-Pyrenees, ideally placed for visiting the Cathar castles of Montsegur, Puilaurens, Queribus and Puivert. The local caves of interest are Niaux, with its' hand prints and cave paintings (all genuine), Lombrives and the large drive through cave of Mas d'Azil which has been inhabited for thousands of years. If you want the feel of French markets you can visit the mediaeval bastide town of Mirepoix on a Monday as well as those of Limoux, Lavelanet and Esperaza and there is always the wine-tasting...... The largest lake in the Ariege is close by (10 mins), the Lac de Montbel and if you want to experience white water rafting, kayaking etc. that is also nearby at Axat or Alet.
