About Jennifer and Willie Mackey

William & Jennifer have been married for 30 years, we have three grown up sons. We have lived in Donegal all our lives, indeed our families can be recorded back to 18th century in this region - I guess we are local! Willie took early retirement in 2010 having worked in Telecommunications and Jennifer is now a full time housewife having worked as a Child Support Worker. We now have a small working farm on which we breed Connemara ponies and some Aberdeen Angus cattle.

Jennifer and Willie Mackey purchased this cottage in 2012

Why Jennifer and Willie Mackey chose County Donegal

In March of 2012 we acquired a little Cottage down the road from where we live. The Cottage was in good condition and so after only some minor alteration and redecoration “Wild Rose Cottage' came into being. It is a very cosy Cottage, clean warm and with everything necessary to make your holiday enjoyable. It stands on its own half acre site, peaceful and quite even though it is only a 5min walk into the local village of Dunkineely.

What makes this cottage unique

Wild Rose Cottage is a 100 year old traditional stone cottage which has been upgraded over the years to a comfortable / cosy home while still retaining some of its old style. Whether you wish you chill out in the garden with a glass of wine or relax in front of the open fire you will not be disappointed. There is a Satellite TV and a DVD player if you need it and also WiFi Internet to catch up with friends and family back home. The cottage is ideally located to access many of our beautiful beaches , breathtaking mountains and other scenic drives or if you prefer to browse in the many craft shops in the nearby towns and villages. We have many award winning Restaurants to choose from in the area as well as many traditional Irish Pubs where you can join the locals in a nights music and craic. For the sports enthusiast there is Golf, Fishing, Pony Riding, Scuba Diving and Mountain Walking just to mention a few .

Wonderful location and a warm cozy cottage

  • 5 of 5

We stayed in mid-June and found Wild Rose Cottage perfect for our family of four. Willie was a sincere and welcoming host. Everything was as advertised, we couldn't of asked for a better location in Donegal. I would highly recommend WRC to all my friends when they visit Ireland in general and Donegal in particular. Thanks Willie!!

You won't find better than this!

  • 5 of 5

Second time staying in this slice of heaven. I am writing this review as I sit in front of the lovely open fire in the wild rose cottage. We were here this time last year only our eldest was 2 and youngest was 4 months. It was perfect then, and it's perfect now with a 3 year old and a quick year old running wild. We have explored many of the local sights that we can with young kids....but can rely on the well equipped house full of toys and games to entertain the kids when we need to come back and recalibrate. With farm animals around and such nice fresh air it's the perfect escape and education for city families. It's the ideal opportunity to get some r&r if you have a busy lifestyle. And it's a great way to see the most stunning views Ireland has to offer.

Aside from that...it's run by two completely amazing people who are always happy to help. It's no wonder we returned, our only complaint is that we didn't do it sooner.

Thanks to the Willie and Jennifer, we look forward to our last couple of days in this fantastic place. Stephen, Danielle, Ebbie and Holly

A perfect retreat in one of the most beautiful areas of Ireland

  • 5 of 5

The Wilde Rose cottage more than matched our expectations and provided the perfect setting for a relaxing retreat in county Donegal. Whether you want to explore the most stunning sights in the area, or simply experience the local pubs, restaurants or beaches i would definitely recommend you choose the Wild Rose cottage. The place is clean, offers all facilities you may need from a well stocked kitchen to a cozy fireplace. Willie was very friendly and provided all the help for any needs we may have, he even prepared extra beds for when we decided to host other unexpected friends!

Beautiful Cottage, Great Location, Awesome People!

  • 5 of 5

Myself and a few co-workers from southern Missouri were in Ireland with work and decided we wanted to sight-see the west coast. We found this property on the Homeaway sight and decided we would try it. WOW!!! It was one of the best decisions we made. The property itself is awesome. It is a 100 year old farmhouse that has been remodeled but kept some historic feel. It was very affordable, very clean, and had all the amenities that you need. On top of all of that, its in a great location to see so many wonderful sights. As if the location and the cottage itself wasn't enough, then there were the home owners. Jennifer and Willie are two of the nicest people you will ever meet. Jennifer made us feel at home right from the start. She also has a book that she has built for your stay that lists literally any question that you might have about the property or the area. It was so informative, from where to eat to where to get gas or even the nearest hospital or pharmacy. And then there was Willie, whom made a lasting impression on all us. Such a great man, with vast knowledge of the area and Irish history. Our only regret was not having more time with these people and this place. If I'm ever back in this area I will stay here again and I would recommend this cottage to anyone. You are missing out if you're in the area and don't choose this place.
