About Francine or Eric

We are Eric and Francine Chittenden, and we each grew up in Vermont. Eric is an ancestor of Vermont's 1st Governor, Thomas Chittenden. Francine was born in Quebec, and thus her 1st language is French. We both grew up on dairy farms. We got married in 1973, and founded the Cold Hollow Cider Mill in 1974, which rapidly evolved into one of Vermont's premier 'must-see' attractions. In 1980 we created Governor Tom's restaurant, an immensely popular eatery for 8 years. We sold the cider mill in 2000 to Paul & Gail Brown so that we could fulfill our growing 'bucket lists.' The mill continues to be very successful.

Currently Eric holds a license to sail as Captain on the largest ships in the world, and works primarily on the Hawaiian run as a deck officer. Francine is Director of Human Resources for the Vermont Foodbank.

Francine or Eric purchased this estate in 2000

Great Views

  • 5 of 5

The property is brilliant and we had a wonderful stay. I was a bit surprised that we were only renting part of the house and the caretaker lived in the majority of the home. Most of the rental area is on the lower level and we occasionally heard footsteps walking in the early morning.

Despite that, the family is very generous and made our stay very comfortable. There is a hot tub, great fire pit and a comfortable and relaxed setting. We also had access to the water and a number of watercrafts.

If you're looking for a quite getaway, this is a great spot!

Relaxing and Luxurious Vacation

  • 5 of 5

We were looking for a large rental house to accommodate us (parents), our college age daughter and a few of her friends with enough space to be private and enjoyable for all. We could not have been more pleased with the property and our hosts, Francine and Eric. The grounds were wonderful, spacious and well maintained and we made good use of the private beach, boats and hiking trails on the property. The accommodations were also spacious and well planned out for maximum comfort and relaxation. Aside from purchasing the usual food and excellent beer , there was nothing that we needed that was not provided. Truly a wonderful vacation and we look forward to going back.

Perfect location with great accommodations and very welcoming hosts

  • 5 of 5

Four of my colleagues and I attended a weeklong conference in Stowe. We chose to stay here at the Blue Heron Cove because there were 5 bedrooms with full or king beds. Other rentals had at least one or two rooms full of bunk-beds. An alternative motive was to be on the lake and have access to fishing. All 5 of us really enjoyed our stay. The accommodations were very comfortable and the owners were incredibly welcoming and nice. As others have noted, they encouraged us to have a good time, make as much noise as we wanted, and stay up all night by the fire. We took them up on that offer a few nights. Eric prepped the fire-pit with wood every day and made sure we had everything we needed to enjoy our stay. We also took advantage of the lake and took a canoe and kayak out on the water fishing. We caught a lot of small-mouth bass and perch and explored the lake a bit. This place is amazing in the summer, and I can only imagine how much fun it would be in the winter.

I've used HomeAway and VRBO a lot of times, and this was by far the most positive and easy experience. Eric and Francine are the tops. I can't recommend this place enough.

Memorable Weekend Getaway!

  • 5 of 5

Our group had a memorable stay at this place! Our heart and mind are still at this place . Very beautifully organized. We were 10 adults and 3 kids and everybody was able to do their favorite activity. Canoeing, Swimming, Volleyball, Golfing, Soccer, Hot tub, trail walking, pool table or sitting by the fire place and enjoying picnic. There is so much to do at the property that we did not even get out for other places. On our last day, we did go to Moss Glenn Falls hike, directions provided by Eric. Eric and Francine are very nice owners that they were constantly looking to ensure we had the best time. Eric even gave us bottle of his home made cider- BEST ONE. One of us wanted to enjoy woods so much that he slept at cabin in the woods. We are definitely coming back in winter. This place had made our bar of expectations very high from vacation point of view.. Now it will be little harder for us to find a place like this for our future getaway.
