We are Eric and Francine Chittenden, and we each grew up in Vermont. Eric is an ancestor of Vermont's 1st Governor, Thomas Chittenden. Francine was born in Quebec, and thus her 1st language is French. We both grew up on dairy farms. We got married in 1973, and founded the Cold Hollow Cider Mill in 1974, which rapidly evolved into one of Vermont's premier 'must-see' attractions. In 1980 we created Governor Tom's restaurant, an immensely popular eatery for 8 years. We sold the cider mill in 2000 to Paul & Gail Brown so that we could fulfill our growing 'bucket lists.' The mill continues to be very successful.
Currently Eric holds a license to sail as Captain on the largest ships in the world, and works primarily on the Hawaiian run as a deck officer. Francine is Director of Human Resources for the Vermont Foodbank.
Francine or Eric purchased this estate in 2000

Hot tub, sauna, pool table, high-speed internet, flat-screen cable TV, 4 bathrooms, 2 jacuzzi baths, outside shower, volley ball court, 1.5 mile hiking trail that follows a stream in the woods, use of small boats, private beach, fire pit for camp fire at the beach and close to the house, retreat cabin in the woods by the lake, ample parking, gas grill, no extra fees.
The owners Francine and Eric are great and very accommodating! The dining table is perfect for our group of ten board/card game table. Hot tub is maintained and was cleaned just for us. Everything was clean and plenty of toiletries if you forgot them. Definitely a top notch rental!!
My stay was perfect. The home was everything I could want.
Delightful time. The lake, fire place, privacy, all of it. Thank you Francine and Eric for sharing your home.
... it wasn't exactly what I expected. The property and all of its outdoor grounds are beautiful but the rented lodgings are a bit dark and damp. One of the bedrooms doesn't have a window. In fact, booking for a group of 9 (as it was our case) required the use of two separated apartments within the main house (one on the main floor of the house and another at a walk-out basement level), which made it a bit difficult to share the group's time more practically. Although we didn't get to interact that much with Francine, Eric was a wonderful and caring host! We missed the Fall colors by a couple of weeks but it was a wonderful weekend while in the region!
Beautiful home and fantastic private beach
My family of 12, 8 adults and 4 children just spent a terrific time in this beautiful house on a wonderful piece of property. The children loved running and playing on the huge lawn and playing on their playground. Great for 5 to 2 year olds. The lake was refreshing and fun to canoe and swim. The stores and restaurants were very convenient.
The owners were on site which was a wonderful thing. Each night Eric, the owner would have a fire ready in the fire pit for us. Each morning he checked and added chemicals to the hot tub, that we enjoyed each evening. Eric even gave us all a toast with his delicious home made hard cider on our last day. Wonderful people, Eric and Francine !
The first morning we were surprised to see a magnificent black bear cross the far corner of the property. The trails around the property were fun to hike. One of our older sons spent 2 nights in one of their secluded cabins by the lake. Eric left him 2 bottles of wine there .
Great time.......wonderful owners.
