This delightful 4 bedroom house in the beautiful riverside village of Dornes, has been sympathetically restored to a high standard. Whilst the house has been rebuilt to comply with EU regulations and affords the modern comforts that one would expect in the 21st Century every single part of the original fabric of the ruin has been incorporated into the building thus preserving that special sense of history and energy that permeates this medieval village. The house, in the village itself benefits from panoramic views towards the historic tower, the characterful rooftops and the river. Not only does this house offer families and friends a retreat away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life, but the size and layout also make it an ideal venue from whence to run small workshops/retreats. Walking groups, nature lovers, water sports enthusiasts and fishermen alike could spend endless hours exploring the glorious surroundings. It is also an inspiring location for creative pursuits.
There is a parking area outside the house and a set of steps that lead down to the main front door. The house benefits from an intercom system between the main gate and the house and there is also a burglar alarm installed which is directly connected to the Central control. The features of the alarm system afford guests the facility to call for an ambulance, fire brigade and the the police, all at the touch of a button. There are also two main doors on the village side of the house, giving quick access to the village and river beach. All windows and patio doors are double glazed and fitted with internal shutters and external pull-down mosquito blinds, thus adding to the security and overall comfort of the guests. The house is set over two storeys and sleeps eight people. All areas, apart from the bathrooms which have heated towel rails, are heated with underfloor electric heating. There is a wood burning stove in the drawing room for those cooler evenings and lazy Sunday afternoons. On the ground floor there are 3 twin bedrooms, two of which have patio doors that lead out onto a terrace. The third bedroom has an en suite shower room. There is also a family bathroom. Upstairs there is an en suite double bedroom with patio doors that open out onto a terrace. All bedrooms have double fitted wardrobes/drawers, bedside cabinets, a cheval mirror and a chair.
The drawing room has wonderful views across to the the tower and patio doors leading onto a terrace that overlooks the village and river. There are 89 international TV channels, Home Cinema with surround sound and Wi-Fi. The large farmhouse style kitchen/dining area has patio doors leading out onto a large terrace and the main garden. The kitchen is well equipped and the extending dining table comfortably seats 8 to 10 people. Outside there is a large utility room, housing an American Fridge Freezer/Ice Dispenser, Washing Machine, Clothes Airer/Dryer, Iron and Ironing Board, Barbecue, 8 x Sun Loungers, Patio Furniture, Cool Box, Hot Water Cylinder and Sink for hand-washing. There is also a Pump Room that houses the automatic irrigation system for the garden with an area set aside for log storage. The main garden which is accessed from the kitchen, is set on two levels and there are magnificent views of the river and village from both aspects. The upper level is predominantly designed for use as a barbecue area and also for those who prefer to seek the shade. The kitchen terrace is an ideal place to enjoy breakfast and there is a herb garden for those who like to indulge in a little culinary expertise! There is a pergola planted up with a variety of species and there is also an outside shower for those who wish to cool off! Stepping stones wind their way between a chamomile lawn and scented plants to a garden bench where one can sit and enjoy the vista. Ancient railway sleepers have been incorporated as steps and these take you gently down to an area of plants, decking and beyond to a sunken dining area that will comfortably seat 12 people. The pergola over the dining area has been planted with a variety of climbers, that when mature, will offer shade in the heat of the day and from here there are fantastic views across the river. The garden is home to a variety of plants, two olive trees, a pomegranate tree and a selection of citrus trees. There is a small walled river-pebble garden outside the twin bedrooms on the ground floor. Amongst other plants, the garden is home to Bougainvillea, Passion flowers and a beautiful Acer Palmatum. For those who enjoy imbibing in a cocktail whilst dressing for dinner, this terrace is an ideal place to catch the early evening sunshine.
The layout and location of the house is ideal for anyone who wishes to host their own small workshop/retreat. The downstairs accommodation would be ideal sleeping accommodation for your guests. The upstairs en suite bedroom and facilities would afford you privacy whilst giving you easy access to the kitchen and sitting room for those early morning pre-workshop preparations. The sitting room is 7.6 x 4.2 m.sq and the furniture can be re-arranged to suit your requirements. There is also ample storage space underneath the stairs for any equipment you may wish to house. For further information regarding facilities please refer to the description of the property. NB. Supply of any specialist equipment required for your workshop is the responsibility of the workshop host.

I spent many wonderful holidays in Portugal and also worked in Oporto for 6 months many years ago! My uncle owned a house on the lake in Canicada, which is situated in the Peneda-Geres National Park. Arriving in Dornes reminded me of the many happy times I spent at his house.....barbeques, water skiing and swimming in the lake...long warm summer days. Wonderful.
Propriedades Ribeirinhas Lda purchased this villa in 2007
I fell in love with the village of Dornes and although the house was a complete ruin, I could feel the positive energy in the building. Luckily I found a builder who was very sympathetic to the history and he used every stone and piece of wood from the ruin to rebuild the house.
The views from the house and garden are wonderful...looking out onto the river and village from most aspects. There is a feeling of peace all around!
Stayed August 2015

This house is so breathtaking, i absolutely adored it! Everything you need is available in the house, the decoration is stunning and the garden is too good to be true. The river is near the house and easy to reach.
The relaxed communication with Frans and Liz is very good, Frans is very very kind.
I can't wait to go back!
Absolutely wonderful house where the attention to details was exquisite. Idyllic location to visit the medieval Portugal. Piece of paradise on the edge of a lake. All the mod con you can wish for. Accurate description, clean and we'll maintained and perfect customer service make it a holiday house that I will certainly recommend to my friends. You can rent boats to go round the lake or 4x4 to climb on top of the local hills to view fantastic sceneries... So much to see all around that one week isn't enough. We will come back. Thank you Liz for a fantastic house. And Frans for your kind welcome.
The house was really beautiful and provided a lot of space and privacy in- and outside for us and our guests. Though the weather was not always sunny (normal in this season) it was also a pleasure to be inside. The house is in a very quiet and natural spot and we made trips to Tomar, the sea, Coïmbra and so on. The house was a good base to explore the surroundings. The owner and the house-manager were very friendly and helpful. In fact we cannot think of something, that was disappointing. Liz and Frans: thank you for this wonderful holiday!
We went with a group of seven and all of us absolutely loved our stay.
The information regarding facilities was spot on. We were greeted by Frans, an incredibly kind man who gave us a tour of the house and told us about the local area. The villa was well furnished, comfortable bedrooms and a lovely kitchen with a large table around which we could all sit and play games. The river, with a little beach, in which we swam daily was only a 1 minute walk away. And the villa has a lovely garden with two seperate places to sit and enjoy the view.
Would recommend it to anyone!
We would like to thank you for our wonderful stay recently at Casa de Lis. Photos and reviews are one thing, experiencing this property is another! It is unique. It is a treasure. It is a piece of heaven with the most amazing lakeside views, resting in a stunning location! It was the perfect location for all our day trips to Portugal's historic gems such as Coimbra, Tomar etc. It was always delightful to return to Casa de Lis in the evenings. The house had everything that we needed & more! The owner has put so much thought and detail into making this a very special house to rent & she couldn't have been more helpful with our booking! It is definitely somewhere that I would not only recommend.......but that I would return to! Thank you Casa de Lis.

The villa is set in the mountains and provides good base to explore the surrounding region and its history. And for those looking for a change of scenery the coast is another option.
