it truly was a jungle hideaway. The drive up the hill the first time was a little sketchy - but not a problem. Kitchen was well equipped. Pool was clean. The owners Les and Paula were great who also reside on the property in a garage they turned into there space. We did have an Ant problem but Les took care of it immediately. IF you are looking for a tranquil escape this is your place. I already miss hearing the Howler Monkeys. Great stay. Pura Vida

Owner's Response: Thank you Mary. You and the other members of your group were great guests in every way. It was a fun experience. The ants truly were an unexpected occurrence as we spray regularly to keep them under control. We felt really bad when this happened as we endeavour to make the stay for all guests an enjoyable one. It was great the way all of you accepted this as part of experiencing jungle living and carried on with your holiday. The Howler Monkeys are already calling for your return!!

Great house but some issues

  • 3 of 5

The good:

The house is great. Extremely well appointed, great view, great pool, comfortable rooms. Kitchen is well set up for cooking. The area is safe and secure and removed from the business of downtown Samara which is nice if that's what you're looking for.

The bad:

Les and Paula informed us when we got there that they were actually going to be staying in the guest apartment attached to the house. There was no mention of this when we booked the house or in any of the communications before hand. There obviously wasn't much we could say about it once we were there so we just rolled with it. To a certain extent it was somewhat helpful to have them there when there were issues with the house or when one of us got sick (they had advice for where to go for the doctor) but it was definitely a bit awkward with regards to privacy.

There was also an incident with Les and Paula at the end of the trip that made us uncomfortable enough that we left a day early. We apparently left the AC's on by accident when we left for a day trip. It was an honest mistake and the first time it had happened. Rather than just mentioning it to us and asking us politely to make sure we shut them off during the day, Paula decided to knock on our door at 8:45 at night after both kids were asleep and my wife and I were in bed watching a movie and proceeded to angrily lecture and scold us. She then pushed her way into the door which I was clearly holding only slightly open so that the kids weren't waken and my wife had some privacy. She apparently wanted to make sure the door to my daughters bedroom was closed.

That experience was extremely awkward and uncomfortable. We rented a lot of vacation houses over the years and never had an experience like that. We only got an apology from Les after I told him we were upset and leaving a day early and never got an apology from Paula. As we were leaving Les mentioned that we had used slightly more power in two weeks than they had used in the whole last month. It was mentioned as an accusation but considering we were using 2 bedrooms and ACs instead of one and had 4 people instead of 2 (twice as much laundry, dishwasher etc) that seems to actually verify we were using the power appropriately.

I would not recommend staying at this house if Les and Paula are there but otherwise it's great. They honestly just don't seem entirely comfortable with people staying there.

Owner's Response: Dear Keith First of all, thank you for the positive comments about the house. We believe, however, that you are quite unfair with your other comments about our hosting and we feel that certain facts need to be clarified. You forgot to mention that the ad clearly states there is a $40 per room per week charge for the use of the air conditioning and a $250 security deposit; neither of which we collected from you. We gave you a break as you did not bring the money with you and because of limits, you had difficulty obtaining cash from the ATM. So, in fact, trying to be nice we waived the A/C fee but expected that in return you would respect the cost of running the units as was clearly stated in all literature. Yes, we do accept the fact that you possibly forgot to shut the units off on the day that you were away for the entire day and nothing was said to you about it upon your return. It should also be noted that the controller for the A/C was buried in a drawer in one of the rooms so that even if the room was at the set temperature it would never shut off. As well, both bedroom doors were left open. So, after overlooking the day with the air running for no reason, it was noted that same evening the unit in one of the bedrooms was again running with no one in the room and the bedroom door open. It was also noted that the air was also running in the other room also with the bedroom door open. The open doors allowed the cooled air to escape into a very large room with 28 foot ceilings and open windows. So we tried to be fair but we do not feel that we received fair treatment in return. With all due respect we had no need to barge in as it could be easily seen from outside that the units were running and the bedroom doors were open. As mentioned, we also did not charge you the security deposit. After your departure, we lifted the place mats well situated on the expensive dining table to discover several large white blemishes in the wood finish. The repair charge to get the blemishes worked out was $150 (have photos) . We did not think it necessary to explain the segregated manager accommodations on the property. The management suite has a separate entrance and is located at the end of one wing far from the living area of the main house. You and your family had total, private use of all the facilities. Unfortunately your abuse of our generosity brought about the need for us to finally say something and we believe that responsible renters will understand that.
