The cottages Carruba are 4 cute homes, with Internet and air-conditioning, located in a stunning and perfectly peaceful setting between the sea and Mount Etna, proudly surveying an estate on the coast, with a direct access to the pebbled beach of Praiola. A road leads from the villa to the sea passing through a valley full of flowers and Mediterranean plants. All on private land. From the garden the views extend from the lush green of the surrounding lemon orchards to the crystalline blue of the sea. The inspiring sight of Mount Etna is right behind the cottages. In the village Carruba (400 meters) is a bakery and a supermarket. The second beach of Praiola is only 1 km away. Torre Archirafi, Santa Maria la Scala, Santa Tecla and Aci Trezza are pleasant fishing villages with good restaurants. Taormina and the sandy beach of Giardini Naxos distance 25 km.
Guests can pick the fruits of the different fruit trees on the estate.
We have been with Homeaway since 2006, proposing houses that are able to unfold Sicily's colours and charm at best.
Houses with quality furnishing in unique locations, with incredible views or with a pool, always accurately selected in order to satisfy our main wish: to see you falling in love with Sicily just like we did.
We provide you with transparent information and true pictures. What you see is exactly what you get. We will advise you as much as we can about travel info, transfers and car rental.
Dinners in villas and other extra services can also be arranged. Finally, our prices are final rates! There are no hidden additional costs. We are flexible with your arrivals and departures and if you need a late check-in this is usually possible.
The apartment did NOT have internet access or a washing machine both of which were in the description. Also the main shower never did work properly in spite of a plumber attending on 2 occasions. The hand shower was broken and in spite of being told that a part was coming and it would be repaired this did not happen.
Family of four Stayed for three nights in July 2015. Lovely cobble-beach with nice snorkelling in walking-distance. Basic but fresh and clean apartment and very well-kept garden outside. Helpful and friendly host. Walking-distance to bakery and driving-distance to genuine restaurant, Le Serra.
It was the beginning of April, but it felt like it was end of May or so. Everything was blossoming and we were a bit too in Casa Mandarino ? I wish I could live there.
Property was difficult to find as the instructions we were given we not sufficiently detailed (can write accurate instructions, if you wish to contact me). The only negative points were a damaged shower head & very slow drain in the shower (clogged).
All other aspects very positive; here are some extracts from notes I wrote: ............drove 40 km north to Carruba, to find the apartment S & I had rented. It turned out to be a self-contained ‘granny flat’ in a large farmhouse which dominated a huge vegetable & fruit plantation. To the west, Mount Etna, which dominates the skyline of eastern Sicily and a kilometre eastwards, the Ionian Sea. The fertile plantation is on the foothills of Etna, which has frequently erupted over the millennia, disgorging lava which has evolved into the rich soil which allows abundant crops………lemons, mandarins, mangos, walnuts, potatoes, courgettes were at different stages of cultivation. Whilst the apartment was small, we had a huge lawn to ourselves, a corner of which was covered- where we ate most of our meals & enjoyed our evening drinks.
.....we inspected ‘our’ estate, ending at the rocky seashore & had a swim in the warm waters.
One evening, we were joined for a drink by the owner of the plantation, Signor Pennisi, a gentleman in his eighties who told us the plantation had been in his family’s ownership since the 1650’s. We asked how they had survived Etna’s many eruptions & he explained that a huge valley stretching SE from the summit diverted most of the lava flows west of his property (but unfortunately towards Catania, which has been destroyed many times over the millennia). Signor Pennisi did not speak English & we do not speak Italian but he & Sylvia conversed in German & with me, he spoke in French……so Euro-communication is alive & well in Sicily; Robert Schuman would be pleased.
Also on the plantation is, according to Signor Pennisi, one of the oldest diesel pumps in the world, built by Herr Diesel in 1901 & used for pumping water- for irrigating the plantation- for many years until replaced a few years ago. It has a huge, wide bore single cylinder……..

The villa in which Casa Carruba is located, lies halfway between Catania and Taormina and just seven kilometres from Acireale (a pretty little city, built on a plateau of lava, that is known for its Baroque churches). Gardini Naxos, a seaside resort with beautiful sandy beaches, is just 25 kilometres from Casa Carruba. Beside it we find Taormina ‘the pearl of the Mediterranean’ and the most exclusive seaside resort in Sicily. Its ancient Greek theatre is world famous for its extraordinary panoramic views. Santa Maria la Scala and Aci Trezza are pleasant seaside villages near Casa Carruba. In the village Santa Tecla, a few kilometres from Praiola, is the renown, but quiet cheap, fish restaurant “Da Lorenzo”. 2 km from the house is the big supermarket 'Iper simply'. Only 1 km from the house is Carruba, a town, with several shops and squares.
