A Boater's Paradise!: If you have a boat...Bring it along! There is a mooring in the cove which will accomodate a 32 foot Boat. Kyak rentals are available just up the road and can be delivered and picked up. The Sheepscot Bay area is a Boater's paradise, with wonderful destinations close by...
Cleanliness!: I have had the same reliable wonderful cleaning gal for 19 years. The cottage is always spotless and mattresses are new, comfortable and completely covered with high quality mattress protectors.
I have so many beautiful and touching reviews and letters from from guests who have stayed at my cottage since 1989, and I have saved them all! They are in the cottage "guest book". I could notbegin to choose which ones to publish on this site, so come and spend some time on the island and you will be able to read them all and add your own!
Ellen, owner for 37 years.
My sister booked this storybook house for our Dad's 70th birthday. The house slept all 12 of us, without feeling cramped or crowded. The view alone would have been worth the entire trip. From the back of the house, you can see fog rising off the water in the mornings, seals playing in the water, lobster boats, occasional harbor porpoises (we think that's what that was) and INCREDIBLE views of sunsets and sunrises. There's a firepit. And the night sky is so filled with stars, you can see the Milky Way!!! But the inside of this beautiful well cared for cabin is the real unexpected treasure. Every item in this cabin tells a story. There are books and beautiful things in every corner of every room. It feels like you are stepping into a well loved well cared for family cabin. There's even a small story on one of the walls, that tells the history of the cabin cabin itself. We stayed for a week, admiring the view inside and out. This is one of the best vacations we've had in years, and the beautiful space and home was as much a part of that, as any of the people in my immediate family. We're going to be taking, for years, about that summer we spent a week in the beautiful white house by the sea. Enormous thank you to Ellen Grant, for sharing this once in a lifetime space.
Had a great time. Very comfortable and we all settled right in. Plenty of space, great views, lovingly decorated.
This might have been a perfect vacation. We arrived up to a basket of freshly picked wild Maine blueberries and a welcome note. We unpacked our suit cases and opened a beer and sat by the water listening to the seals as my large family to twelve from all over the country made their way to the cottage. It was a perfect week of lobster and blueberries and fires and smores. We saw harbor porpoises and went fishing. We ate world famous lobster rolls and took a puffin watching cruise. We played games and did puzzles. We drank, we talked, we reconnected in picture perfect setting. Thank you Ellen, for being so kind and for such a purely magical home. It was more than a vacation, it was a living post card that we will all remember forever!
I'm always a little suspicious when I read gushing reviews of places because I assume the reviews were written by relatives but I promise I'm not a relative. In fact, I've never met the owner of this lovely cottage although I would certainly like to now that we had a family reunion at her cottage in June. The four sisters plus husbands and grown kids converged on this lovely cottage and discovered a place that is lovely but not precious. We were very comfortable there (the decor was AMAZING) and the cottage had everything we needed, including huge lobster pots to steam our own lobsters and detailed info on the area and its attractions. We loved browsing through the little towns, eating way too much lobster and then coming back to the cottage. There were books, puzzles, DVDs and games galore. We had gorgeous weather (I'm sure Ellen arranged that too) which meant we could watch the lobster man check his traps everyday and gush at how beautiful the view was. It was heaven for all of us and we had a great family vacation. A huge round of applause goes to Ellen, an owner who really knows how to welcome and pamper her guests.
There were 12 people from 6 different states and everyone loved the house. In all the years we have been meeting, that was a first! The house is welcoming and open, giving the feeling of coming "home". The area is quiet and lovely. Took day tours to many of the surrounding towns (you have to go to the Wine and Cheese Shop Treats in Wiscasset!) Walked off our weight in Lobster each night on the scenic country roads.
Seven members of our family spent a week in Ellen's lovely, well-maintained home. Sitting outside on the lawn overlooking the bay, walking down the wooded road, eating together in the charming dining room and sitting in her sunroom, are all things I will remember. My son and his wife had a little getaway by staying in the attached "apartment" above the garage!
Ellen's decorative sense adds much to the feel of her home.
I recommend her cottage to anyone who wants a quiet oasis 15 minutes from charming downtown Wiscasset, ME.
The bridge to Westport Island is located 3 miles down off Route one, between Bath and Wiscasset. The cottage is 7 miles from the bridge. Our 3.5 acres of vast green lawn, stonewalls and 800 feet of deep water frontage offer privacy and spectacular views of the Maine Coastline and Sheepscot Bay...looking out to open Ocean. The island itself has only a General Store, Country Inn and Town Hall, but we are close and convenient to all of the attractions that the midcoast has to offer. Sheepscot Bay is a Boater's Paradise, with beautiful islands and easy access to the open ocean by boat.
