Fabulous Vacation Home in Tuscany

  • 5 of 5

We just returned from a wonderful week at Borghetto Calcinaia, a beautiful place to stay in eastern Tuscany with delightful and welcoming hosts, Gilly and Dennis .

The property is as gorgeous as depicted in the photos on the site; it is located in area that is easy for day trips to hill towns and other cities in Umbria and Tuscany. And knowing that a large pool with a tremendous view of the Tuscan countryside awaits you whatever your plans for the day, adds to the enjoyment of the stay.

But what really makes Borghetto Calcinaia so special is Dennis and Gilly. They have an ability to make complete strangers ( like my husband, myself and our five traveling companions) feel like old friends. They are incredibly helpful and generous of spirit: fresh baked local bread deposited on the kitchen table each morning, making reservations at small local restaurants and then escorting us up through the back roads to be sure we found the places, a warm, freshly baked tart by Gilly set out for us after a long day, and always being available to answer questions. And yet, for the week we stayed there, we all felt like we were in our own private paradise.

Each of the four bedrooms had its own private full bath, lovely views and comfortable beds. The kitchen was well equipped although Dennis and Gilly will arrange to have local chefs come up to the house and cook for you too. If it is possible to enhance the beauty of the surrounding area, Gilly has done so with her well loved and kept gardens.

As my husband and I got in the car to head to the Rome airport for our return home, we both agreed- it would have been wonderful to stay longer.

A Tuscan Paradise

  • 5 of 5

Having just spent a week at this idyllic 18th Century Farmhouse deep in the Tuscan countryside my wife and I were highly impressed by the comfort, lavish furnishing and facilities and outstanding hospitality of our hosts Gilly and Dennis. Everything from the beautiful scenery and garden to the beautiful bathroom and comfortable beds enhanced our stay. I cannot recommend Borghetto Calcinaia more highly. Thank you Gilly and Dennis, we will be back.

An out-of-season idyll in the heart of Italy. Just go, it is well worth it

  • 5 of 5

My wife and I love Italy and have visited the country many times but this trip was truly special. We wanted to visit Tuscany out-of-season and were able to book Casa Susinetto at Borghetto Calcinaia, one of Dennis and Gilly's two superb one bedroom units for the beginning of November just for a few days. They can be booked individually when the pool is closed. This proved to be a great decision. The accommodation is warm, spacious and really comfortable. A warm and friendly welcome awaits you with a few goodies already in the fridge. There is so much to see in the area and Dennis and Gilly are THE perfect hosts. There is not a town, village, restaurant or café that they are not well informed about and helpful in deciding where and when to go. Vasco's for Sunday lunch is a wonderfully personal creation of typical local dishes and wines that seems to just go on forever. Well worth a visit. You wake up in the morning to fantastic views across the lake, prepare yourself a leisurely breakfast then head out to visit Cite di Castella or Anghiari or any of the many other interesting locations that are there to tempt you. Fabulous. This was an outstanding trip that was great value for money and one that I would recommend to anyone. You won't be sorry.

Don't hesitate - just book it.

  • 5 of 5

Having read all these very accurate and detailed reviews, I want to say "Bravo Dennis and Gilly" for you have earned each of them.

Our group of eight older, well seasoned VRBO users agreed Borghetto Calcinaia is the best.

First because of its spacious functionality, its incredibly beautiful setting in the Tuscan hills overlooking the lake, its stunning and careful restoration and its central location within easy day trips to many towns.

However, this Villa comes with a difference .... the owners !

Dennis and Gilly have the unusual ability to 'live' next door, virtually unseen, until you need them.

Warm, witty and always willing to use their expansive local knowledge and connections, they made our 10 day stay more than we had ever expected or hoped for ..... even to helping us sort out a difficult, mixed up booking in Venice.

How we wished we could have just stayed on a further week in their Italian paradise.

Impeccably refurbished villa with spectacular views and top-tier hosts!

  • 5 of 5

Please pardon the fact that this is several months overdue, but the review is no less sincere! Our stay at Borghetto Calcinaia was nothing short of spectacular. Granted we had unprecedented weather (low 80s during the day, 50s at night the entire week), but nature cannot take credit for the incredible service-intensive experience Dennis and Gilly created. First, the surroundings: Calcinaia is a gem of property with meticulously revitalized buildings perched above the gorgeous man-made Lago Montedoglio. The lush property provides every manner of sensory enjoyment: spectacular views, lovely scents from the gardens and trees, the sounds of animals providing a light ambiance during the evenings. Every corner of each building was given the greatest care in restoration, with tasteful, modern, cozy furnishings. Updated appliances throughout ensure 'old-world charm' does not equal inconvenience. The location was ideally located, with many famous Tuscan and Umbrian towns being only a short drive away. Exploring the walled city of Anghiari close by was a highlight of our trip!

As hosts, Dennis and Gilly are consummate: There was not a need unattended; in fact, they seemingly provided resources, advice, and support before we even knew our needs. Do you want an amazing home-cooked meal in the hills of Tuscany? No problem, Dennis is on the phone, making it happen. Having trouble with a recreational company living up to their word? Dennis will make the call for you and smooth everything over. Do you desire a family dinner at home? Gilly will make the most mouth-watering Tuscan meal you've had the luxury to enjoy.

One of the most telling reflections of a host is how they handle a problem that develops with their guests. In our situation, some in our party had an allergic reaction to something in one of the houses. Dennis and Gilly worked with us quickly to ameliorate the issue and ensure we were 100% satisfied with the resolution - even long after our departure Their good nature and commitment to us as guests never wavered.

If you have an opportunity, don't miss a stay at this gem with fabulous hosts!

Mozzafiato

  • 5 of 5

Our family of twelve including five grandchildren ages 5, 3, 2, and two babies spent a magical week at Borghetto Calcinaia in April. We lived in Italy some years back and have traveled the country extensively and can say with certainty that the vista from the Borghetto Calcinaia is one of the most breathtaking we've encountered. Every detail of the property exceeded our expectations from the surrounding area, the estate, and the gracious hosts, Dennis and Gilly.

When reminiscing about our trip to friends we describe Borghetto Calcinaia as Shangri-La and can't wait to return.

Many thanks to Dennis and Gilly who helped make our trip so memorable.

Grazie mille!
