Photos and Description of this 8 bedroom holiday chateau / country house in South Norfolk - The Old Hall

Luxurious With A Relaxed Family Feel - Sleeps up to 18

Featured in The Sunday Times - August 2015 and The Independent - October 2013 as one of the 50 best British breaks. Featured in Good Housekeeping February 2016 "It's perfect for a family celebration"

Please see our website for more details and links to our Trip Advisor reviews - theoldhall.net

Stunning Elizabethan country house set in 17 acres on the edge of a Norfolk conservation village. Spacious and luxurious with a relaxed family feel this proper country house is perfect for family holidays, parties, celebrations, get-togethers or just getting away from it all.

We offer The Old Hall on a self catering basis but can offer a full range of catering options ranging from a waitress served dinner cooked on site by a Michelin rated chef through to freshly cooked fish and chips to eat in the garden or around a roaring fire depending upon the season.

There are lots of things to see and do in the area but if you prefer to stay closer to home we can arrange a host of activities to suit all ages in our extensive grounds - archery, shooting, birds of prey, bush craft for kids, tennis lessons.

If you prefer to organise your own fun there is plenty to do both outside or in with woods to explore, dens to build and cupboards full of family games to suit all ages.

We have an outdoor heated swimming pool which is available from May until the end of September. There is tennis and croquet for the competitive or if you prefer to be pampered a Champneys trained beauty therapist can visit the house.

We sleep up to 18 in 8 bedrooms - ideally 14 adults and 4 children. Our bedrooms are arranged as follows:

3 very large super-king / doubles with en-suites, 2 with dressing rooms

2 doubles

2 twins - one of which can be a super-king

funky attic dorm sleeping 4 - full sized beds but more suited to children / teenagers

family bathroom plus extra loo

We also have two additional loos downstairs.

All beds have Egyptian cotton linen and we provide White Company shower gels and soaps.

We can provide travel cots and have 3 additional 'put up beds' available on request at an additional cost.

You enter the house through the original oak studded front door which leads to the Great Hall with a beautiful 17th Century oak inlaid fireplace. This is an incredibly atmospheric room especially when lit by candle light in the evening. Our main dining table is here.

There are 3 more reception rooms including the drawing room with an enormous 15th Century open fireplace, the panelled yellow sitting room with French windows leading to the croquet lawn and a very large sitting room overlooking the gardens with French windows leading to the terrace.

Additionally there is a small library and a housekeepers sitting room which has been turned into a children's chill out room with easy access to an enclosed courtyard.

The large country style kitchen has a 4 oven Aga, seating for 6 and an extensive range of cookery books. In addition we have an electric hob and oven.

As you would expect there is a laundry room, a traditional pantry and a boot room.

Two staircases lead to the first floor. The master bedroom suite - with a super-king bed has spectacular views over the gardens and comprises both a shower room and a bathroom / dressing room.

There are two large additional bedrooms of historical interest - a double and a super-king - both with en-suite bathrooms along with a twin bedded room and a room containing an original 17th Century four poster bed.

On the third floor there is a double room with an original French bed, a bedroom than can either be a twin or a super-king, a family bathroom and an attic room with a children's dorm sleeping up to 4 - these are full sized beds with good quality mattresses but the decor is slightly funky and is really aimed at children / teenagers.

Also located in the attic is a home cinema with a sofa, bean bags, an extensive DVD library and of course popcorn!

Apologies but we are unable to accept stag or hen parties.

From October to February (excluding school holidays) we offer a reduced rate of £2,250 for groups of up to 12 guests for either a two of a three night stay including weekends.

For guests who are able to stay mid-week we offer a 2 or 3 mid-week stay for up to 10 guests which includes a chef cooked waitress served dinner for £2,250 (again excluding school holidays).

About Janine Price

We moved to The Old Hall in 2000 with an eighteen month old, a nine month old and a chocolate lab. We set about restoring the house following the chaos caused by the previous owners who had 13 dogs in the kitchen, a barn owl in a dressing room and 2 monkeys living in a bedroom!

Our children are now at school in North Norfolk and we've moved to be closer. As we also have a house in Corfu which we rent out to guests it seemed the natural thing to offer this house too - see listing 411698 or www.annalena-corfu.com

Janine Price purchased this chateau / country house in 1990

Why Janine Price chose South Norfolk

One of the very special things about The Old Hall is that it has remained largely unchanged since it was built in 1625 and we knew that it offered the canvas to create a wonderful family home.

What makes this chateau / country house unique

This is a genuinely historic house oozing original features - the lands were part of the divorce settlement from Henry VIII to Ann of Cleves and The Old Hall was reputedly considered as a home by both Prince Edward and Madonna - yet it is relaxed, friendly and, as it always has, really comes to life when full of people.

It is a warm and friendly house and offers a fantastic backdrop for a celebration or get together.

Guestbook comments from the owner

Wonderful old house with splendid grounds and facilities, and very well equipped. In particular, we enjoyed the feeling of space, the beauty and comfort of the living rooms, wildlife, heated swimming pool and garden room. Bill the fish for fish and chips, cooked in his van outside the front door, and the recommended caterers for our formal dinner were a great success.

Very minor points for consideration - the croquet equipment could be improved and the BBQ could be supplemented to make it easier to cater for large groups

Stunning, welcoming, comfortable

  • 5 of 5

The owners of The Old Hall rent their absolutely adorable house out to groups but the personal touch is akin to staying in a boutique hotel.

Ridiculously comfortable beds with heavenly duvets. Weekend stay toiletries, freshly cut flowers and treats. Up to date films and games for kids. They have everything you could possibly need - this is one well-stocked kitchen, pantry, utility room - and in a 17th century house and landscaped grounds we all fell head-over-heels in love with.

One of the loveliest places we have ever stayed, the pictures are beautiful yet don't do it justice. The Old Hall made a special weekend all the more so.

Girls weekend at the old hall.

  • 5 of 5

We had a wonderful stay at the old hall, we couldn't quite believe it was ours for the weekend when we first pulled up, especially when we spotted the peacocks on the lawn!

The house and grounds are steeped in history and character, just beautiful, but the owners have cleverly balanced the traditional living spaces with very comfortable and modernised bedrooms & bathrooms. The kitchen was very well equipped and soon became the main hang out for our group and with multiple living areas, there was so much room to socialise as a group, or take some time to yourself.

Feeding the hens, geese and peacocks was a great addition, and I can imagine it being a great focal point for a family trip.

The information we were given prior to the trip was fantastic, and we were welcomed by the lovely housekeeper Katy, with cupcakes and champagne!

I would thoroughly recommend the house & plan to visit again.

Truly amazing weekend

  • 5 of 5

I hired the Old Hall for my 50th birthday celebration. This wonderful property is one of those places you just fall in love with. When I first saw it, I just knew it would make the perfect setting for what I had in mind - spending the weekend with 12 of our friends and family. I could not have chosen a better location. The first thing everybody noticed was of course the sheer beauty of this wonderful house, all the tasteful detail and period charm, all those amazing rooms to be discovered and explored. The next thing was a sense of being at home - it felt like "our" house within no time, not like a rented property, and in the end nobody wanted to leave. We loved the resident poultry!

Janine the owner made the whole experience as easy as can be, making sure everything ran smoothly from the first booking enquiry through to our departure, she was helpful, really quick to respond and efficient in dealing with any queries I had. She provided lots of tips and ideas of what to do while staying, as well as anything one might need to know about the house.

We just stayed at the house most of the time (it was a very cold weekend, snow on Saturday!) and enjoyed the different sitting rooms and open fireplaces. We did archery with Mark (who was recommended by Janine) and this was a lot of fun for everybody despite the snow. We had some brilliant catering done by Bespoke, who provided a top service and food.

A truly amazing weekend that we all will remember for a long time to come. I am already thinking about coming back for a Summer Party....

Can't recommend enough.

Fantastic stay - cannot be faulted!

  • 5 of 5

We stayed here for a weekend to celebrate our silver wedding anniversary with a group of friends. The house is beautiful, keeping a sense of period and history in the decor, but all the necessary home comforts and mod cons. The photos do not do it justice. The owner greeted us on our arrival and made us very welcome. Everything you could need is available. Cosy kitchen with everything required for the preparation of a feast or an informal breakfast. Comfy beds, fluffy towels, 4 sitting rooms, well stocked library, log fires, wifi, coffee machine, peacocks, candle-lit dining hall, board games and champagne - what more could you ask for? Well, the weather could have been better - we think the gardens are amazing but not easy to see under a covering of snow.

We will definitely be trying to think of an excuse to go back.

Top Notch Venue For A Birthday Celebration

  • 5 of 5

This venue is top-notch. We spent four days with family and friends a birthday celebration in this amazing old house and we could not have chosen better. We would go again.

The house is furnished in well thought-out tasteful traditional style with antique and modern quirky artefacts and every corner has an interest, delightful books, magazines and flowers.

The open fires were stunning and very welcoming on the cold days. The bedrooms were sublime with every comfort, the attention to detail was superb.

Much thought has gone into providing a beautifully equipped home from the kitchen to the garden.

The children had the time of their lives, their bedrooms were exciting, the playroom fulfilled their every need and the huge garden provided excitement for every age group. There was garden entertainment for adults too, we enjoyed the archery as it was too cold for the pool and tennis did not appeal.

The house is beautifully situated and photos do not do justice to its stunning rooms and beautiful location.

The owners and the nearby housekeeper were totally charming and explained everything in great detail, we had no problems at all, just a stay to remember in one of Britain's loveliest houses.

Fantastic and homely venue i

  • 5 of 5

Our group of 13 rented The Old Hall for NYE 2012, as we wanted a venue with character and which accommodate us all. We were by no means let down. The Hall is a fabulous house and the rooms extremely comfortable. There were so many areas to explore inside that house that even with a large group it felt very spacious. As we cooked all our own food for the three days, including large three course dinners, the kitchen with its user friendly environment and well stocked equipment was perfect. I can't rate the housekeeper or the owner's customer service highly enough. We're so impressed we're already looking to rent it again.
