Overview

Photos and Description of this 4 bedroom holiday cottage in Rosedale West Side - Appledore Cottage

Four bedrooms. Sleeps 8. Pets welcome. Garden. Open fires. Free wi-fi internet.

Appledore Cottage is a lovely end of terrace cottage with a large garden, plenty of parking and glorious views over the surrounding hills. The cottage has a very high four star Quality in Tourism rating and is fully refurbished and well equipped (including free Wi-Fi internet). Appledore is very comfortable and is light and airy by day and cosy in the evenings. There is a large, slate floored, kitchen living room with sofas, free-sat television and a wood burning stove at one end with fitted oak units at the other and a circular dining table, dishwasher, oven, fridge and freezer and washing machine. Also on the ground floor is a very cosy sitting room with open fire, a downstairs twin bedroom and a shower room with a good powerful shower. The downstairs has underfloor heating. There is easy access to the large garden and a lovely sheltered patio for al fresco dining. Upstairs there are two double bedrooms and one twin bedded room. All the beds are of a very high quality and the bathroom has a lovely large bath. The cottage has fast free internet Wi-Fi. Please visit www.appledorecottage.co.uk for more information.

Appledore Cottage is set in the small hamlet of Thorgill. It is at the end of a no through road which makes it very peaceful but not isolated. The cottage has lovely views of the surrounding hills and countryside and has a large garden with plenty of space for sitting out or playing. There are wonderful walks from the house of varying distance and challenge and relaxing in the garden on a summer's day is an absolute joy with the babbling stream to be heard over the adjacent field. There are maps in the cottage which you are welcome to use and we provide plenty of local tourist information. Rosedale is a wonderful valley in which to walk and for those who want to walk further Farndale, Hutton le Hole and Lastingham and all within reach on foot.

The nearby village of Rosedale Abbey has two pubs, which both serve meals, and two small shops both with tea rooms. Both shops have basic provisions and one sells newspapers and has internet access. There is a lovely walk from the cottage to the village. There is also a small golf course at the end of the lane and there is horse riding available locally. There is good shopping at the local market towns of Kirkbymoorside and Pickering which both have a weekly market. There is a swimming pool and leisure centres at Pickering. One of the leisure centres has tennis courts. There are plenty of good food serving pubs and restaurants nearby. Whitby, Scarborough and the North Yorkshire coast are within easy reach as are York, Castle Howard, Flamingoland theme park and zoo, the North York Moors Steam Railway, Goathland and Heartbeat country and the Danby Moors Centre. The Yorkshire Moors National Park is full of lovely villages with great pubs, fantastic walks, wonderful streams and a host of idyllic spots to relax and unwind.

About David and Emma Glover

We have lived in the North East of England for the last 23 years. Having lived for many years in Durham we currently live in Washington which is just south of Newcastle. David is the Rector of Holy Trinity Church in Washington and Emma is a partner in a North East firm of Chartered Accountants. We have three children who are all now young adults.

David and Emma Glover purchased this cottage in 1998

Why David and Emma Glover chose North Yorkshire

We fell in love with Rosedale Abbey after having a couple of holidays there when our children were young. We thought then, and still do, that Rosedale has to be one of the most glorious places in the world! We began to look for a property to buy. We wanted somewhere which required renovating so that we could plan what we wanted. When we first saw Appledore is was in a pretty poor state but in a glorious position. It was exactly what we wanted. Having hired an architect and a brilliant local builder we set about completely renovating the cottage and significantly extending it. The work was completed in 2000 and, while retaining its charm, the cottage was completely modernised. If you stay in the cottage do look at the photo album which records the renovation process.

We started to let Appledore as a holiday cottage in 2005 and have enoyed seeing many families holidaying there and enjoying the cottage and the beautiful countryside. We continue to enjoy the cottage still and stay there several times each year.

What makes this cottage unique

It was the glorious location that made us fall in love with Appledore. The garden feels like a continuation of the hillside and we just love it. It feels like our piece of heaven and we so love being there.

Guestbook comments from the owner

We had a delightful week at your lovely cottage. We could not have asked for more and your kindness was very much appreciated.

I will certainly recommend your house to others and I hope to make a return visit next year.

Many, many thanks once again.

Wonderful relaxing stay.

  • 5 of 5

Beautiful, well equipped cottage with gorgeous views and walks. Lovely garden and sunny patio. Really comfortable beds.

There is the most delightful, easygoing walk into Rosedale Abby, crossing the bridge over the river. (A delight for children and dogs). This only takes 25 minutes (reasonable strolling pace), to get to Rosedale where there is a selection of lovely tea shops.

The walk over the top is little more strenuous, but worth the effort. Many other walks which we did not have time to explore.

We certainly hope to return.

Delightful cottage!!!

  • 5 of 5

This is a cosy well looked after cottage in beautiful surroundings. We had a great family holiday, can't recommend the cottage highly enough. David called us on the morning we travelled up to check if we were okay and the neighbours were very friendly. This is a really lovely area lots to visit and do and it was a delight to return to the cottage each evening. Beds were comfy and the cottage met all our needs as well as giving us lots of space to be which was just what we needed. Would have loved to stay another week. Thank You

Secluded, peaceful and very comfortable

  • 4 of 5

A lovely property up a narrow country lane in a beautiful part of the world. There are excellent opportunities to walk, ride and cycle and the coast is within easy travel.

The property is very comfortable and spacious enough for 8 (4 adults and 4 children in our case). We came in the summer but I could imagine that it would be lovely and cosy in the winter with the log burner lit.

You do need to plan your shopping because the narrow roads mean that it takes significant time to get to a shopping centre, and the fridge is a little on the small side (a supplementary one in the garage would help).

We thoroughly enjoyed our time at Appledore and could easily see ourselves returning.

Wonderful house in a beautiful location

  • 5 of 5

Appledore cottage is a very comfortable and well appointed house, there was absolutely everything you could possibly need for a relaxing family holiday. We love to cook and the kitchen was ideal both in terms of layout and equipment. There are seating areas outside in the garden and we were very fortunate with the weather so able to enjoy all the house could offer. Very comfy beds and sofas which we often find is not the case in holiday lets, but this is clearly a family holiday home and this is obvious from all the furnishings and all the extras.

Great walks direct from the door, friendly neighbours, a local farm offering eggs and conserves. Lots do do in the local area with lovely villages, cycling and walking. The moors and valleys are very pretty and all the local towns are full of character and interest.

We had the contact details for David the owner who was very helpful. There was a welcome pack waiting for us which was very appreciated.

All in all a great holiday in one of the best properties we have stayed in. I would definitely recommend to friends and family

A perfect family cottage in a beautiful spot!

  • 5 of 5

Appledore cottage was just beautiful. We were a three generation family with three dogs and the living and outside space was ample and comfortable. The cottage was clean and welcoming. Large bedrooms and comfy beds! The open plan kitchen dining and family room was perfect for family time together. You can tell that this is a well loved family home and we thoroughly enjoyed our stay here - the owner made contact to check we were all ok and so did a neighbour which made us feel really well looked after. Lots of great walks from the doorstep. The village has a few Good tea rooms and pubs and you are within easy reach of the beautiful Yorkshire coast. We would definitely stay here again to enjoy the peace and quiet which wasn't even spoiled by the early morning cockerel chorus!

Spacious and homely in a beautiful setting

  • 5 of 5

Although this is an end of terrace house, it felt very private. Lots of outdoor space, including a lovely flower-filled little courtyard with a big table and plenty of chairs. Inside the cottage was very spacious and comfortable, and very well-equipped. There was lots of info about things to do in the area. The cottage is set in gorgeous countryside, and we saw lots of wildlife (including a hedgehog in the garden!). Kids said it was the best holiday ever!
