About Melanie Stephens

I was born in Mousehole and have lived here all my life, so obviously know the area well. Mousehole is a beautiful village, which still remains unspoilt. I enjoy meeting guests and hope that they will love the village as much as I do! "Cobbler's Cottage" is part of my family home which originally incorporated two cottages. However, as my husband & I are now retired we have split the property back to its original state and live in one cottage and let the other.

Why Melanie Stephens chose Mousehole

It is my family home which has been in the family for at least 75 years.

What makes this cottage unique

It is a beautiful character property which is situated in the heart of the village, being just 50 metres from the harbour. Luckily, we have our own private parking which is a real benefit.

Guestbook comments from the owner

Having had a rocky start with car breaking down 40 miles into our journey, getting towed home & restarting 7 hrs. later in a hired car, it was so welcoming to eventually arrive at this fantastic cottage and be greeted with home made scones. Especially as it was late and no food to be had! Pubs etc. close early beware! We had a lovely week visiting the many resorts of Cornwall, thanks to Melanie & Phillip. The cottage is everything we wanted and we couldn't ask for more. (Except mobile phone reception at Mousehole) Ha Ha.

We would certainly recommend "Cobbler's Cottage" and hope to revisit again. The Kings Arms pub is also a good & well priced meal out in the evening.

Thanks, Melanie & Phillip for a lovely holiday.

Perfect Cottage!

  • 5 of 5

Cobbler's Cottage is a wonderful place to stay. The cottage is beautifully maintained with everything you need for comfort and fun. Mousehole is a welcoming village, and Melanie and her husband are most welcoming hosts. We so enjoyed meeting Melanie and learning more about the history of the cottage and the amazing village of Mousehole. There is so much to explore in the area, and so much to enjoy in the village that is just steps away from the cottage. Melanie responds immediately to emails and requests, and her cream tea and other welcoming touches make you feel at home immediately. We hope to come back again to this magical place! Thank you so much for a most memorable holiday.

Charming coastal home-from-home

  • 5 of 5

This is a lovely cottage, well planned on two floors. There were two of us but is roomy enough for four without being crowded. Comfortably furnished and well equipped. Friendly and very helpful owners. It's two minutes walk to the harbour, bus stop, two good eateries and the Post Office. We have not stayed in a nicer property - a real home-from-home.

Eating out- The Ship Inn is excellent and good value, 2 Fore Street is also good but more expensive. The Dairy next door to the cottage is good for lunch and makes a superb home-made lemonade! Try lunch at the sea-food bar on Newlyn bridge.

Eat in- the Post Office has a good range of basic groceries, plus excellent bacon, ham and sausage (pronounced soss-sarge). The proprietor goes fishing and we enjoyed two excellent lobsters from him. It also stocks good everyday wine. Mousehole has a farmers' market every Monday in the village hall offering a variety of interesting fare.

Nearby Newlyn has a deli, green grocer, butcher, baker, three fish mongers and a co-op. No need to go further afield.

During our two weeks we visited the Isles of Scilly (worth it for the sea trip alone), The Lost Gardens of Heligen (fascinating) and the Tate at St Ives, all by public transport. We spent a great deal of time just relaxing in Mousehole, which is an enchanting place to be. The Tourist Information Office at Penzance is well informed and helpful.

Travel: Mousehole has a half-hourly bus service from Penzance from early morning to late evening. (Avoid the 9.30 am service as it gets very crowded)Transport links from Penzance are excellent. We arrived by train on the newly refurbished Night Riviera from Paddington, and excellent way to travel.

All round this was an excellent holiday and we will be revisiting Cobbler's Cottage again for sure.

Wonderful getaway

  • 5 of 5

Very sweetly decorated, historical, clean and spacious cottage with everything you need. Wonderful welcome with wine and scones which we really appreciated. Great location, we recommend having a car to hit nearby towns and beaches (Treen was a favourite if you are a strong walker). The Old Coastguard for pub with amazing view and selection of wine. Fore St restaurant 30 secs away for special last night meal and The Ship Inn for a good boozer. Melanie and her husband were so helpful, pet friendly and parking made it so easy! If you come with a dog do some research about dog friendly beaches before hand. Thank you Melanie for our relaxing few days.

Lovely, cosy and clean cottage conveniently based

  • 4 of 5

We have recently enjoyed a fortnight's stay at Cobblers Cottage. This is our third time to this property, and we love it. It is minutes away from the beach and the harbour, which is a safe haven to swim in. The cottage is clean and cosy, and Melanie and Phil always give a warm welcome. Highly recommend.

Great cottage, in a great location

  • 5 of 5

Our 2nd visit here with a dog and 2 teens. Good WiFi, we could get a phone signal at harbour, good pier jumping, smoothies a few doors down so teens happy. Mousehole is lovely, used Chippy in Newlyn and Chinese near swimming pool in Penzance as well as pub and restaurant in Mousehole. Only ice-cream shop open in evenings in Mousehole so you do need to be organised for food. Good location for beaches, Minack Theatre, St Ives. Cottage is spacious and well equipped, helpful and friendly owners.

Beautiful Mousehole cottage with parking.

  • 5 of 5

A lovely holiday cottage, clean, well equipped and ideally situated close to the beautiful Mousehole harbour. We were given a warm welcome, as always, with a bottle of wine, flowers and a lovely cream tea. The added bonus is the adjacent garage provided for parking. The owners, Melanie and Phillip, took the time and trouble to ensure that all our needs were met throughout our stay without being intrusive. We love Mousehole, are frequent visitors there and Cobblers Cottage is our first choice when looking for somewhere to stay. During our time there we visited the Lizard, Kynance Cove, Marazion and St Ives. We also spent many hours sat looking over Mousehole Harbour and talking to the friendly locals and the many visitors from all over this country and abroad. My favourite activity is listening to the Mousehole Malevoice Choir. They make visitors welcome at their practice sessions every Monday night and we were lucky enough to see them in concert at Paul Church. A wonderful holiday with wall to wall sunshine - so good that we came for two weeks but decided to stay for three (it happened to be vacant for an extra week)! One of our best holidays yet!We would definitely recommend this cottage to all our family and friends.

Mousehole is a beautiful unspoilt village of quaint cottages and narrow streets clustered around the old harbour. The village has much natural beauty; stunning coastal walks, pebble beaches with rock pools and a sandy harbour which still has a few working fishing boats. The renowned 2 Fore Street restaurant and the Ship Inn, the village store/post office are all just 200 metres from Cobbler’s. Many interesting galleries with live-in artists and the Old Coastguard Hotel, which has an excellent restaurant & beer garden overlooking the beach are all close by.

The village is beautiful at any time of year whether it is bathed in summer sunshine or lashed with dramatic winter storms. The spectacular lights around the harbour and dotted around the village at Christmas and the New Year attract visitors from all around the world.

Mousehole is well placed to explore the West Penwith area which boasts many attractions such as the surf haven of Sennen, beautiful beaches such as Porthcurno also the home to the Minack Theatre, St. Ives with it's stunning sandy beaches, fabulous restaurants, art galleries and the famous Tate Gallery, Marazion and St. Michael’s Mount and further afield the city of Truro with its lovely Cathedral, the Lizard Peninsula, Falmouth, Newquay and the Eden Project and so on……. The fishing port of Newlyn is just a 10 minute drive & from here you can buy fresh fish & shellfish, Newlyn also has art galleries & a cinema. Penzance is also in the beautiful Mounts Bay & has the renowned & renovated Jubilee Pool - a 1930's lido. From Penzance it is possible to take boat trips around the coast & Mounts Bay.

Further West and there is St. Just, an old mining town, the surrounding area is steeped in the tin mining industry and the nearby Geevor mine offers underground tours.

Whatever, the season or weather, there is always something to do.
