Exceeding High Expectations

  • 5 of 5

We have stayed in much more expensive accommodations, but none more enjoyable than Pelican Brief. As architects we appreciated how well it functioned with both great together spaces and opportunities for individual privacy. Exceeding high expectations the house was well equipped and comfortably furnished. Pelican Brief delivers an overload of spectacular views, natural beauty, and wildlife in every direction. The only drawback was staying for just a week rather than two or more; a mistake we won’t make next visit.

Fishing Swimming Fun !

  • 5 of 5

We recently celebated our wedding anniversary with some of our children and grandkids while stayng at Pelican Brief, and we couldnt have fonder memories. The owner, Jim, greeted us at the ferry dock and helped shuttle our crew of 7 promptly to the beach home. The house was clean and tastefully decorated with a fully equiped kitchen and more. Being on the sound side of the island, the home offered beautiful views of the morning sunrise. Dolphins, manatees and all kinds of birds made their way by just about each morning. At night, the fishing action was outstanding all along the beach, walking/casting in between the many docks. Speaking of dock, the property has a terrific dock equipped with fish lights as well as a cleaning station with fresh water! We swam daily and the kids enjoyed snorkeling for shells and treasure. August brings the warmest water temps, as well as your typical late day t-storm, which gave us dramatic sunset pictures with double rainbows over our shoulders! The family all had a great time and want to go back!

Thank you Jim!

Heavenly. Best spot on the island.

  • 5 of 5

After a long drive down with 3 small kiddos, I think my whole body just sighed with relief & relaxed as soon as Jim picked us up from Barnacle Phil's and I walked into the door at the Pelican Brief.

The house is beautiful. It is immaculate. AND! it has the perfect layout (especially for families with small kids) as there are multiple dining and seating areas-- in case you ever need to ring the bell & send your battling kids to their respective corners :) The kids room, in particular, was decorated beautifully & whimsically for little bittys. They loved their room and we appreciated the extra wonder it gave them.

I can't say enough about this spot. Jim is a pleasure to talk to & do business with, the house is stunning. It is well-appointed with a hammock, kayak, beach chairs, games.

The private beach & dock make you feel like you are the only ones on the island. We saw manatees, dolphins, every kind of sea bird (brown pelicans, ospreys, anhingas), snakes, snook. We were able to grill out & have a private beach party every night.

I cannot recommend Pelican Brief enough. It is a magical place.

D & J

We have been vacationing on North Captiva Island for 25 years and Pelican Brief is our favorite home on the island to stay in. We consider the location on the bay side beach with the dock perfect in every way for every activity. Walk 50 feet to the beautiful beach, fish off the dock at night or just sit and enjoy the views, which are simply spectacular. On this trip we had both dolphin and manatee about 5 ft from the dock which thrilled the grandkids. The home is always well maintained and the owner is a pleasure to work with. We used to think we would go back to the mainland and do some activities but we have never done so. There just is no need or desire to leave. If you need a spot to unwind and decompress, there is nothing quite like Pelican Brief on North Captiva Island. We found it was the perfect spot for our family vacation as we got a chance to reconnect as a family after dealing with the craziness of life. We started taking our kids there when they were in grade school and now they come down with our grandkids. I almost hate to share this review and have competition for our secret spot. I just cannot recommend it enough. We just plain love it...

Relax and Ejoy!

  • 4 of 5

We had a great time at The Pelican Brief. The island is the perfect escape from the craziness we call normal life. Upsides are beautiful view and nice floor plan. Downside is that you really can't keep a boat at the dock for long.

Jim gave us the full tour of the house and explained the items needing attention. We had only one issue when the AC quit working. There is a float switch at the downstairs handler that keeps water from flowing over when the drain pipe clogs. Clearing the drain pipe and pulling the float out and replacing it fixed the problem.

Would definitely recommend if you don't own a boat and enjoy getting away from traffic jams!

Wonderful time.

  • 5 of 5

My sister and my family rented from Jim during thanks giving week. It was a very wonderful stay. The place was very clean and well prepared for our arrival. It was very nice having the beach outfront and the pier to do night fishing. We were able to fish off the pier almost every night and caught a good amount of fishes for dinner. I had forgotten some items in the house when we left and Jim was very helpful in sending them back. Overall, a great experience. Highly recommended.
