Alfama is the oldest and most traditional of Lisbon’s neighbourhoods. Its existence can be traced back to the period of Moorish domination from the 8th century onwards. Its name comes from the Arabic Al-hamma, meaning fountains or baths and referring to the numerous water sources that used to exist and feed various fountains.
Spreading along the south east slope that descends from the mediaeval São Jorge Castle, meeting with the River Tejo and just 10 minutes walking from the apartment, we are able to find some of the most important touristy sites and monuments that Lisbon has to offer. These include Sé Patriarcal de Lisboa, Lisbon’s Cathedral and oldest church dating back to 1147 and also seat of The Archdiocese, The Monastery of São Vicente de Fora which, is a 17th century, mannerist styled masterpiece, The National Pantheon, where some of Portugal’s most important historical characters are buried or The National Museum of Fado. Other notable places of interest are The Casa dos Bicos, famous for its Gothic Architecture from the 16th century and Nobel Prize winner José de Sousa Saramago’s Foundation Headquarters, Terreiro do Paço, the royal residence from the 16th century until the 18th or the flea market known as Feira da Ladra or 'Thieves' Market'.
Alfama is also one of the old neighbourhoods where Fado runs through the blood of its people. As the purest expression of the soul and the feelings of the Portuguese, Fado can and should be enjoyed in the many restaurants and bars everywhere or simply heard through an open window in a private house.
There are several ways to discover the secrets of Alfama. Walking calmly through its picturesque labyrinth of narrow streets and small squares or taking a ride on the famous number 28 tram are two of the most enjoyable. And the breathtaking views from Santa Luzia and Portas do Sol overlooking Lisbon and The Tejo River should not be missed.
Today, Alfama is a vibrant neighbourhood with its recovered architectural heritage that combines history with a cosmopolitan feel, offering a variety of restaurants, bars and craft shops that will delight those who visit us.
Welcome to Alfama.
Really good service from Paolo, including airport pick-up late evening. The location is in the very heart of Alfama,- cant be better! Note, that there is no car traffic in the lane, but some chat from vendors and by-passing tourists. The flat is small but charming and perfect for two adults!
We will definitely be back some time!

We wanted a comfortable and safe apartment right in the middle of the fun and that is what we got. You step out of the apartment onto one of the quaint cobble stone streets of Alfalma with cafes, music and lots of sights to see. The apartment was clean, livable, a well equipped kitchen and the host is remarkable. Paulo started off by sending a great list of to-dos via email to prepare our time in Lisbon, picking me up at the airport at a ridiculous time of very early morning and making sure everything I needed was taken care of during the stay. We took a two day side trip to Porto and after mentioning this to our host, he forwarded a great list of things to do and see in Porto. l look forward to my next visit!
The apartment is really charming, well-appointed, and felt like home the minute we walked in the door. Paolo explained everything about the apartment, showed us where everything was and how it worked, and obviously loves meeting new people. The apartment is located in the middle of the Alfama district, which is so delicious you almost can't believe it's real. There are four Fado bars within two blocks of the apartment, and crusty Manuela across the "street" has all sorts of fruits, vegetables and eggs. For more shopping, you'll have to find a bigger market. We walked a lot through different neighborhoods, drank many coffees, and marveled at the city. This list for things to do in Lisbon that is painted on the wall in the apt was great! One of the best parts of our stay, though, was getting to know Paolo! He met us at 8:30 am when our ship docked, and he tried to help us when our flights were cancelled because of an airline strike. We fell in love with Lisbon, and we look forward to returning soon.
The Apartment is in a very accessible location very near the main train station with great bars and restaurants literally downstairs. The apartment has been updated with an artistic flair and has a soothing decor. It is fully equipped with all the necessary kitchen equipment and linen. It was clean and well maintained. The owner picked us up from the airport at no extra charge. The owner was very helpful and settled us in on arrival. The location for sightseeing on foot with very good transport links. I would definitely return and recommend it to friends and family.
The property was immaculate. There is a steep staircase up to the apartment but you do get use to it and there is everything you need. The apartment is so central to everything. The flea market is a must which is held every Saturday and Tuesday. The churches are stunning. It was just lovely to walk amongst the narrow streets. Going to the castle and seeing the views over Lisbon were amazing. But you do need good walking shoes. Paulo is lovely and made sure I was OK. Thank you Paulo.
Stayed in this lovely apartment for a week, it was exactly as described and seen in the photos . Supplied with everything you could need, decorated and kept to a high standard. Paulo picked us up (& took us back) to the airport and gave us lots of information about the area & transport etc, he also kept in contact during our stay. The property is well situated in the Alfama area, with restaurants on the doorstep. Lisbon is a great city to explore and we couldn't do everything, so we will have to go back one day! Paulo is a perfect host, friendly, helpful & everything is well organised and professional. Thank you.
