The cottage is located in a quiet and safe area.

Pharmacy, department stores, grocery stores, etc, are all within 1 mile distance.

You can WALK to several restaurants or drive to many more.

Feel free to ask if you have any questions. I want to do whatever I can to make sure that your stay is comfortable.

House is well-maintained and with original art, antique furniture, and other antiques. This IS, above all else, a family home filled with several generations of heirlooms. Our oldest family heirloom in the house dates to the early-mid 1600s. Bonus points if you can identify it!! :-) PLEASE DO NOT move antiques, china, and other furnishings around. All the China is between 50 and 90 years old. Some pieces are very rare and valuable. Please also refrain from opening every drawer and door on all the antique furniture. Some of them stick and can easily be pulled off track. ((There's always that ONE snoopy guests who just has to go through everything and look in every cabinet ---don't be THAT person)).

If you enjoy art, antiques, and you will LOVE staying in this home. Please feel free to ask for information about anything you see in the Cottage! There is a LOT of history inside!

See Pictures!

***Please note there is an apartment in the basement where I have an office, bedroom, and laundry room. I will -- as needed-- enter through the back door and descend the stairs to the basement during daytime hours. Unless there is an emergency, I will not need in there at night. The door to the apartment is locked and guests will not have access to this area. However, in the event of severe weather, I will meet the guests in the stairwell and escort them into the basement and stay there with them until any weather threats have passed. I have another small house across the street that I use for an office and storage. I stay in that home when guests are at the Cottage. I'm less than half a football field away if you need me! I will check in with you daily to do dishes/cleaning/maintenance as needed, do laundry in the basement apartment, etc. But my time on site is limited as I do work as restaurant consultant, book editor, freelance writer, and ESL instructor online.

In the Dining Room -- THERE IS a printer for guests to use to print out boarding passes or other urgent matters. Super fast internet.

large MAPS of Lawton and Wildlife Refuge available to study (in the Dining Room)

There is no TV. We ask that our guests relax and interact with their traveling companions/family, other guests, read, or just sit outside (weather permitting) and just let go of the need to constantly be "plugged in" to technology.

((Games available -- Board games and card games))

The Hunter House is a treasure trove of antiques and original art.

Please enjoy but do not touch or handle!!! :-)

Relax, talk, unplug from the world!

It's an old hardwood floors creak when someone walks across them. Nothing we can do about that!

((Free WIFI but please no "streaming" or huge downloads.))

Making a reservation under false pretense that you're disabled and your dog is a Service Animal is illegal. Online vendors who sell these service badges and harnesses are committing a crime against disabled people and cheating you out of your money to do it. Please help put a stop to this abuse through education and communication.

We are sorry, but we cannot accommodate "pets".

Why Susanna Hunter chose Lawton

Family home -- filled with several generations of heirlooms --- furniture, art, antiques, and other assorted heirlooms.

The home has been open to outside bookings now since 2012.

What makes this house unique

Art and History! The home is a historic 1935 fieldstone cottage built at the height of the Great Depression and Dust Bowl. The town of Lawton was only 34 years old when the home was built. The home was build on one of the original sites of a homestead from the Land Lottery of 1901. There is a table in the home that was brought to Lawton via covered wagon in 1901 with an original settler. Several book clubs and a local history organization all hold monthly meetings at the home. The home is centrally located to pretty much all of Lawton and Ft. Sill.

Guestbook comments from the owner

((((This was posted by a guest on another review site which can be seen online elsewhere --- he was 85 years old and my most favorite guest ever. I truly enjoy having guests who want to immerse themselves in seeing the local sites and having a real vacation experience! -- S.H.))))

"Recently I traveled to Lawton, OK to attend my grandson's graduation at Ft. Sill. During my stay of 4 nights and 5 days, I booked at room at Hunterston Cottage. Susanna picked me up from the Lawton airport and ushered me to the house where she checked me in and made sure I was comfortable. Because I was a day early, she invited myself and her other guests to go on a tour of local sites. With Susanna driving, we visited the Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge where we saw herds of wild Bison and Longhorn Cows. She also took us to Prairie Dog Village, the Visitor Center, the Holy City of the Wichitas, and to the summit of Mt. Scott. After that, we toured Medicine Park. Along the way, Susanna provided the history of the area, fun trivia, and pointed out interesting features of the landscape. As I was in Lawton 2 extra days after my grandson's graduation, Susanna also escorted me to the Museum of the Great Plains, the Mattie Beal House, the Army Artillery Museum on Ft. Sill, and Geronimo's grave in the Ft. Sill Apache Cemetery. It was a vacation that I will talk about for years to come and was truly a wonderful experience. Hunterston Cottage is incredibly clean and well appointed. Breakfast was included with the room and there were many cereals (hot and cold), bread/butter/jam, fresh fruit, and coffee/tea. The kitchen is fully stocked for preparing meals. Everything was neat and organized and there isn't a hotel within 100 miles that offers all the amenities that Susanna does. In addition, the home is filled with antiques and original artwork and feels like a well-loved home. I recommend Hunterston Cottage for your stay in Lawton and you will be blessed have Susanna as a hostess."

Therefore, it is super important that you let me know your plans as far in advance as possible.

Great little place to stay!

  • 5 of 5

The venue was clean, well furnished, and, well, downright charming.

We hope to return next summer.

Great older home

  • 5 of 5

Susanna greeted as we arrived for our granddaughter's graduation from Army basic training. She constantly checked with us to see if we needed anything else. Her house was full of interesting antiques. No tv or radio to distract from family visit. Loved the huge yard with fall trees. Entire yard secured by fence for security.

Plenty of space and all the necessities

  • 5 of 5

We loved our stay at the cottage. Susanna was very helpful and responsive to anything we needed. We rented the cottage for our daughters graduation from basic training. It was perfect for hosting dinners for our family who had come to support our daughter.

5 Star Value - 5 star hospitality

  • 5 of 5

This house is even better than the listing. Every amenity you can think of is provided and the beds are comfortable. The house is full of art and antiques which were really interesting. It's like staying in a museum. Susanna was a great hostess and welcomed us with home brewed sweet tea -- I think it was Apple Spice tea. There were great breakfast choices and fresh fruit. The home is on a huge lot on a really quiet street but right in what seemed to be the middle of town. I was able to get onto Ft. Sill in 2 minutes when I hit the green lights. The yard is fenced and has a lot of lights which was nice. Overall, it was a great experience and I really enjoyed my stay. I loved the shower. The home was super comfortable and I would certainly recommend it to anyone. Susanna stayed in touch daily with texts making sure I was comfortable. Five stars and two thumbs up.

Susanna was helpful and made every effort to make our stay enjoyable and easy. Would stay here again

Owner's Response: I'm not sure why this guest only gave 4 stars. I was told that everything was perfect and that they were incredibly satisfied. I wish people communicated better. It's frustrating as hosts to lack constructive information.
