About John Felt

We love the outdoors. Having fun while cycling, golfing, fishing, hiking, antiquing and exploring is a great way to educate and stay involved with our children! We currently live in California but have fallen in love with the Pacific Northwest. We look forward to sharing this wonderful log cabin and want to hear back from you on how we can improve your experience. We want to work with each and every guest on a personal level so you will enjoy your experience and have memories of staying here for a lifetime.

John Felt purchased this cabin in 2017

Why John Felt chose Baring

The recent purchase of this cabin which we named Skykomish River Lodge was the result of a lot of day trips throughout King County and Snohomish County. Our criteria was very detailed and we were not going to veer off much from it. The cabin had to be on a river with good fishing, great views of the river and mountains (we especially did not want to be looking out at other cabins) close to Seattle and close to a ski resort. Thats it. Well we found the perfect place and now will be sharing this very unique Norwegian cut log home. The lot is nearly one acre, the adjoining lot to the west is owned by the state and will never be built on and the view of Mt. Index and the South Fork of the Skykomish River are spectacular. We are 60 minutes from Seattle and just a little less than that from Leavenworth. What more could we ask for? :)

What makes this cabin unique

We had a fairly long check list when we started to shop for a cabin in Washington. The Skykomish River Lodge filled the bill to say the least! Its located right on the Skykomish River with fishing for salmon, steelhead and trout right from your backyard! Its a custom handcrafted log home using cedar logs from the property. A beautiful 2 story river rock fireplace is part of the focus in the house, but it competes with the views of the river and Mt. Index which you can see from nearly every window. King size bed is in master bed room and two queen beds in down stairs bed room. There are no cabins next to us on all sides except for one. Its off the street and extremely quiet and peaceful.

Perfect Getaway

  • 5 of 5

Hamish and I arrived late at night to the cabin after a long day of work but thankfully the directions they gave us were accurate and easy to follow. The cabin was everythig we were looking forward to. There was a welcome letter with a bottle of wine & sweets and they had prepared the fireplace for us. When we woke up the next morning we were amazed by the views of the river from the cabin. We had the best time and enjoyed every minute of it. We didn’t wanted to leave the cabin so we took advantage of the full equiped kitchen to prepare our meals. We take beautiful memories with us and we thank our hosts for sharing their home with us. We highly recomend this cabin and we can’t wait to get the oportunity of doing it again.

AWESOME RIVERFRONT HOME

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I spent 9 nights in this fantastic, spacious, comfortable, clean and beautiful riverfront home. It is very private and quiet, yet not far from the highway to get to nearby towns and activities. There is one home on one side of the house which you can barely see through the trees and lovely rhododendrons. Hearing and seeing the majestic Skykomish river in front of the house and looking at the towering mountains from the windows is awe inspiring.

The home is very comfortable and supplied with lovely towels and bedding. It was just the two of us but it is a great place to stay if you have kids as there are plenty of beds upstairs as well as a room for activities, games TV, etc.

We loved the roomy downstairs shower and even though there is a beautiful soaking tub upstairs we never used it. Loved the temperature dial on the shower!!!

The kitchen and dining area with bar counter and stools as well as a long dining table and chairs are very spacious and would accommodate a large group.

A lovely fireplace built with river stone was utilized frequently and it is so nice that the owner supplies firewood; we enjoyed it on chilly evenings.

The owners are very easy to communicate and work with and want their guests to have a 5 star experience; we did!

There is trout and salmon fishing on the river; unfortunately the river was high when were there but I'm sure it would be great for catching fish and swimming as well as white water rafting. Rafting outfitters are about 5 miles away.

There are plenty of local activities; hiking, sightseeing, mountain climbing, fishing. We drove an hour to Leavenworth, a wonderful Bavarian style village and to the wineries, as well as Seattle. It is a GREAT place to stay and experience the Cascade mountains.

Thank you for your hospitality and especially the welcoming gifts!!!

Susan and Dan

Best vacation ever

  • 5 of 5

Absolutely beautiful log cabin secluded and quite. Stunning river, mountain and forest views. We caught 18 to 22 inch trout right out the back door. The cabin was wonderful. It was spacious, clean, comfortable and quiet. Proximity to hiking and exploring was great.

Skykomish River Facts-

Facts

The Skykomish River has been a destination for anglers and whitewater enthusiasts from around the world for many years.

The Skykomish River is a free flowing river with no dams. The Skykomish River is only 45 minutes from downtown Seattle!

World Record Pink Salmon was caught on the Skykomish River Saturday September 22, 2001. The fish was 14.49 lbs, with the previous record being 13.1 lbs. The angler was Avis Pearson. Her choice of lure was a #114 (50/50 Nickel/Brass) Dick Nite Spoon! This record was broken October 23, 2007 when an angler on the Stilligaumish River caught a Pink Salmon weighing 15.4 lbs.

The Skykomish River is used for rafting and kayaking, especially around the Index, WA area during the summer months. The Skykomish River is mostly ranked between Class III and Class III+ rapids, depending on the circumstances and season, but includes Boulder Drop, a class IV+ rapids.

In the 1890s the Great Northern Railway was built along the Skykomish, South Fork Skykomish, and Tye Rivers, crossing the crest of the Cascades at Stevens Pass. Today the track is owned by BNSF Railway, known as the Burlington Northern Railroad from 1970-1995.

Stevens Pass is named after the Great Northern surveyor John Frank Stevens. Two railroad tunnels, both called Cascade Tunnel, were built at Stevens Pass. The first one was built slightly north of the pass. It was replaced in 1929 with the New Cascade Tunnel, which at 7.8 miles long was for nearly 60 years the longest railroad tunnel in North America and is still the longest in the United States. The New Cascade Tunnel is a few miles south of Stevens Pass. Its western entrance is near the confluence of Tunnel Creek and the Tye River. A small amount of the water flows out of both tunnels into the Tye River. An interpretive center for the Iron Goat Trail, located at Scenic on the upper Tye River, describes the history of the area including the old railroad and new trail. The interpretive center was built near the site of one of the greatest railroad tragedies in American history, the Wellington Disaster.

The Skykomish River system has a total of 5 waterfalls. The North Fork has Deer Falls and Bear Creek Falls. The South Fork has Eagle Falls, Canyon Falls and Sunset Falls.

The name “Skykomish” comes from the Northern Lushootseed word /sq’íxʷəbš/, meaning “upriver people”, from /q’íxʷ/, “upstream”. It is the name of a Southern Coast Salish group.
