Overview

About the property

The Red Barn Guest House is a beautifully remodeled home with amazing details that makes this vacation rental truly unique! Sleeping 6 guests, this home has stone and ship-lap walls, walnut beams and ceilings, and wide plank flooring that gives it an authentic and upscale barn feel.

The main floor has a kitchenette with a stainless steel mini refrigerator, and microwave, and an induction cook top, crock pot, and toaster for eating in. Cozy built-in nook seating and dining table for eating leading into a lounging area with comfy couch for watching the flat screen TV, playing one of the house's board games, or just visiting and relaxing. Two beautiful custom barn doors divide the living room/kitchen area from the main floor bedroom with a queen bed and mesmerizing Opti-myst Fireplace. Also on the main floor is a full bathroom with a granite tile dual-headed shower, and closet with stacked washer/dryer.

Follow the unique spiral staircase up to the second story bedroom with a matching iron queen bed and double bed. A flat screen TV with Wii console, Wii games, DVDs and other toys will keep the younger crowd happy for hours!

The window upstairs looks over the spacious yet very secluded feeling backyard. A huge old-growth Poplar Tulip tree shades the green lawn, and concrete patio nicely. A little sidewalk leads to the side of the barn where a large 8 person hot tub awaits surrounded by a tall privacy fence and lovely landscaping. The small shed in the backyard has plenty of outdoor games for everyone!

Between the Barn and Main Street, there is only building (the wonderful Magpie's Cafe), so it is easy walking distance to all the unique shops and restaurants Historic St. Charles has to offer!

The story of this historic barn makes it like no other home you've ever rented. Built in 1790's as a stable for the Second Commandant of St. Charles, Carlos Tayon, in conjunction with his home right next door. It is said that Lewis and Clark had dinner with him here before leaving on their expedition! Since then it has had many different owners in more than 200 years who have used it as a residential home, until we bought it and spent the last year making it into the exceptional space that we offer to you today!

Guestbook comments from the owner

"We are so excited to be your 1st guests at the Red Barn.

Wow! So cute and the back yard is amazing. We had a lot of fun exploring St. Charles, St. Louis, and Central Illinois.

Our boys loved the hot tub, the bunk room upstairs, and the City Museum. The also enjoyed both ice cream shops on Main Street.

There are a few adorable boutiques near the movie theatre. I spent all of our money and it's time to return to Kansas City taking all our great memories with us :) "

Charming and Elegant Historical Perfection

  • 5 of 5

As a family of five we generally rent when visiting anywhere as hotels are not that comfortable. The guest house in St. Charles was amazing. So painstakingly thought out to make the best use of space, the interior and exterior were truly an interior design delight. From the light fixtures in the main floor bedroom that resembled lanterns and cast a dim lanternesque light to the mirror in the bathroom placed cleverly in front of the window to conserve space, but rigged to a wrought-iron rod that allowed it to slide from side to side to reveal natural daylight in the bathroom, the details were truly perfection. The beds and bedding (which we generally find to always be a bit underwhelming) where beautiful and tastefully put together, comfortable and cozy. You can tell that so much thought was put into this place, it really was special. Also, pictures do not capture the large backyard which was perfect for our three boys to run around and play in (and it didn't hurt that they had a Wii upstairs in the 2nd bedroom as well - thank you). The kitchenette, while small, was fully stocked with everything we needed. Again, well-thought out. Our extended family that lives in the area were blown away by the house. For the reasonable price it is an exceptional option when visiting St. Charles. I'm sure we will be staying again or trying another one of the guest house properties.

This was a perfect size, location, and set up for a peaceful, easy getaway. It was perfect to walk out the door and straight on to Main Street in Old St. Charles.

Perfect location to historic Main Street in St. Charles. We walked everywhere. We enjoyed the decor, and the backyard was really lovely. The amenities were perfect--snacks, water, coffee. Parking was easy and available on the street. Hope to come back soon!

Amazing!!

  • 5 of 5

Amazing place! It was a great little house for my family and I. We loved all the little extras, like the coffee and snacks. Kids loved having the upstairs to themselves with the games and tv. The house was so close to all the great restaurants and shops. We already have the house booked for a weekend in July! Thank you Audrey and Matt!

Charming little guest house

  • 5 of 5

We had our 8 year old grandson staying with us, and he loved the place. It had a working wii and games upstairs. We enjoyed the hot tub , heated and ready to use. Furnished snacks and coffee. Be aware there is one bathroom downstairs and the stairs are a metal spiral. But there is a rail and we managed them at 70plus. Very convenient to the historic area and riverfront. A cozy and fun little hideaway.. Highly recommended.
