Description

Photos and Description of this 1 bedroom holiday cottage in Bodmin - Slate Cottage

Quiet location, one large bedroom - sleeps three, one bathroom

Slate Cottage is a charming stone cottage surrounded by beautiful countryside. It is on the edge of Bodmin Moor but only a short drive to the breathtaking North Cornwall coastline and just 100 yards from the Camel Trail Cycleway. It is within a courtyard of stone cottages, part of the original Tredethy House Estate, once the home of the Prince of Siam.

The cottage has an airy open plan lounge with kitchen / dining area. The kitchen has everything you need to cook your own meals plus a dishwasher. Television and DVD player are in the living area and a large selection of books and films are available to help you relax. Upstairs there is a bathroom and a large, light filled 'L' shaped bedroom with a Juliet balcony (overlooking the courtyard), with double bed and a single bed. Folding chairs are provided so that you can enjoy the small grassy area at the front of the cottage.

All heating, electric and hot water is included, as are bed linen and towels.

We can also provide a travel cot and high chair if needed.

The cottage is no smoking and sorry - no pets allowed.

Slate Cottage is about 100m from the Camel Trail, a popular 17 mile long cycleway and footpath running from Wenford Bridge to Padstow. Bicycles can be hired locally. We are about 6.5 miles from Port Quinn, our nearest beach. Port Isaac, home of Doc Martin is 7 miles away. There are several good bodyboarding and surfing beaches nearby.

Cornwall's famous attractions are within easy travelling distance: Eden Project 15 miles, Lost Gardens of Heligan 21 miles, Polzeath (popular surfing/body boarding beach) 8 miles, Padstow (home of Rick Stein's famous sea food restaurants) 13 miles, Newquay 23 miles, Port Quinn (for kayaking/coasteering) 6 miles. St Ives (Tate Gallery & Barbara Hepworth Sculpture Garden) 48 miles, Penzance (open air lido/ traditional fishing port) 50 miles, Lands End 60 miles.

For sailing enthusiasts there is Rock on the Camel Estuary 8 miles, and Fowey on the South Coast 17 miles

About Jane McDonald

We have lived in Cornwall for nine years, moving here after many years of coming here for our own holidays. We live just a mile away from Slate Cottage on the outskirts of St Mabyn.

Jane McDonald purchased this cottage in 2012

Why Jane McDonald chose Cornwall

North Cornwall has a rugged unspoilt feel to it. From Slate Cottage you can easily access the wilds of Bodmin Moor or small unspoilt coves on the northern coast. The turquoise sea is breathtakingly beautiful and sea birds, seals, dolphins and even whales can be seen from the coastal footpath. Spend warm days paddling in the sea and rock pooling before settling down to a fabulous meal in one of our local restaurants - perfect!

What makes this cottage unique

We loved Slate Cottage for it's quiet location away from main traffic routes but it has a good central location convenient for sight seeing. It has a lovely history, it used to belong to the country estate of the Prince of Siam!

Guestbook comments from the owner

I’m pleased to tell you my wife Carin and I enjoyed our stay in Slate Cottage. We arrived a little early and had the opportunity to meet your friendly husband. Please give him our regards.

The house was clean, comfortable and well equipped. We slept very well!

The fine welcome, the flowers on the table and the bottles of beer and cider gave us a hospitable feeling.

Eventually we lacked the presence of internet but we already experienced it gave the real holiday feeling.

We made beautiful ridings in the surroundings and fine hiking tours on the Camel Trail and across the country.

Tredethy is a very pleasent and quiet place to stay.

Lovely cottage in a quiet location

  • 5 of 5

Lovely cottage - beautifully laid out with plenty of local information supplied. Plenty of books and DVD's supplied if the weather took a turn for the worse. Quite out of the way which was just perfect for the break we wanted. Had a lovely stay and happy to recommend.

Very clean and well equipped in great location

  • 4 of 5

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Slate Cottage. Excellent location. The cottage had everything inside that we needed and modern internally too. We would miss a garden if we came during the summer months but for this time of the year it was perfect.

Owners very helpful with attention to detail. We had a fab stay, perfect for the Camel trail and for visiting both coasts.Would recommend it without reservation. We combined it with a second week in Padstow. A great combination.

Lovely cottage

  • 4 of 5

This cottage was everything it was promissed. We loved the darkness and quietness off it. The property was clean and decorated with love and we surely will recommend it to friends. The only downside: there is no wifi...

Owner's Response: We love the darkness of living in the countryside too - all the better to see the stars. Lack of Wifi and mobile signal are a problem to some, but it makes it easier to switch off from everyday life and relax. If really needed Wifi can be easily found in local cafes and bars...

Peaceful and relaxing cottage

  • 5 of 5

We really enjoyed our stay in Slate Cottage. It was very peaceful situation and a very relaxing house to be in. The location is perfect for getting about to different places. It doesn't take long to get into Bodmin and from there the roads are good to the major places to visit, and easy for walking the coastal path or on Bodmin Moor. The communication with the owner was good and helpful. We had everything we needed in the house and it was very clean and well maintained. There is no washing machine but that wasn't a problem as we realised that and packed appropriately. The lack of wifi was occasionally awkward, but it wasn't a real problem as we could access it on our days out. There were lots of books and we enjoyed coming back to sit on the balcony with a glass of wine as the sun went down. We would definitely stay there again.

Situated on the western fringe of Bodmin Moor and close to the Camel Trail, this lovely cottage is in a quiet rural location convenient for both north and south coast beaches. It is just a mile from the pretty village of St Mabyn which has a pub and a post office with shop.

The Eden Project, and the restaurants of Rick Stein at Padstow and Jamie Oliver's Fifteen at Newquay are within 30 minutes drive.

The North Cornwall Coast is famed for it's rugged beauty, offering surfing & body boarding, rock pooling, wild swimming, coasteering and coastal footpaths.

We are also perfectly placed to enjoy beautiful Bodmin Moor which offers walking, horse riding, standing stone circles at Minions, interesting rock formations at The Cheesewring and Daphne Du Maurier's Jamaica Inn.

About three miles away are Camel Valley Vineyards offering guided tours and tasting events.

It is just a one hour drive to St Ives. Here you can soak up art and culture with a visit to the Tate Gallery, Barbara Hepworth's Studio and Sculpture Garden and many small art and craft galleries around St Ives town.

It is worth visiting Cornwall in Spring and Autumn, the beaches and roads are quieter and we have some of our best weather. In May and June, Cornish hedges are bursting with wild flowers. In September and October the days are often filled with warm sunshine and the sea is at it's warmest - a great time for swimming and surfing.
