Why Derek and Maria Kemp chose Bourg-Saint-Maurice
My husband and I found this house when we were on our extended honeymoon, a long time ago! We fell in love with it immediately and have spent about 20 years' worth of Summer holidays renovating the chalet. We have tried to retain as much of its rustic charm as possible whilst turning it into a warm and comfortable family home. We have many happy memories of family holidays with our three children, spent here in different seasons - Christmas sledging in the snow at the back of the house (reminder - wear a helmet!), watching the snows melt in Spring to reveal the abundance of wildflowers springing to life, Summer walks to the Fort de la Platte above the village to sample goats' cheese and yoghurt and helping the locals with the walnut and apple harvest in the Autumn.
What makes this Chalet unique
Breathtaking views Crisp, clean mountain air Not a resort but a living, traditional working village

Warm, comfortable and rustic chalet
Overall we all really liked it, it's spacious but warm and cosy! The kids loved it's 'quirkiness' and had loads of room to play. The wood burner is just what you need after a day's skiing with plenty of logs provided and the pipes really useful for drying towels and laundry - just watch as they do get extremely hot! The chalet has lots of character, great big wooden beams and lots interesting features. Boot drier came in handy but we really could have used a washing machine as laundromat is all the way down in Bourg. The chalet is quite remote and the road up to the house is somewhat precarious, a single lane switch back, however the locals are pretty good at giving the less experienced tourists the right of way, there was no snow when we were there so it meant the road was clear but in snowy conditions it would definitely not be for the faint hearted! As the week progressed we did all become somewhat more comfortable with the drive!
Plenty of spare duvets, towels, bed linen etc and everything was clean. We were all really comfortable.
We were slightly disappointed that the pool table on the list of facilities was no where to be found!
Outside there are nice views down to Bourg, however beware of dog pooh all around the house and the 'pack' of dogs that roam around didn't seem to keen on anyone wandering about after dark and could be quite intimidating!
We skied at Sainte Foy which is a lovely small family resort and wasn't too busy even though it was half term. It took about 35 minutes to drive there and parking is free which worked really well for us. Although be aware that ski traffic is a nightmare on the weekends with everyone trying to get in and out of the many resorts nearby!
On the whole we all really enjoyed our stay.
Thanks Louise, so glad you had a nice holiday and enjoyed the chalet. Sorry you couldn't find the pool table, it is on the top floor which you access from outside, we'll make that clearer in the instructions!
Many thanks for your stay.
Excellent chalet with beautiful views from the balcony
The chalet is fantastic, warm, comfortable, cozy and very well equipped to meet your needs. The lounge, kitchen and dining area are of a good size and the log burner is a great way to relax in the evening. If you wish to eat in, there are two large supermarkets in Bourg St Maurice and plenty of eateries for those who prefer to dine out. The ski area is excellent, very little queuing and waiting, great facilities in the villages of Les Arcs. For those that are walkers or cyclists you won't be disappointed either. We all had a most enjoyable time and highly recommend the accommodation.
Lovely house full of character, peaceful location
We enjoyed staying in the village outside of Bourg St Maurice in Dec-Jan. The house is very cosy and has every single thing you might need for a winter holiday - starting with raclette and fondue and finishing with sleds and skiing boots dryers. The wood burner is a fantastic feature and you can also dry clothes on the pipes going from it. The washing machine would definitely be handy. Despite unusually little snow in France at that time, we managed to have great skiing at Les Arcs - funicular goes from the town (15 mins away by car) to Arcs 1600, not too difficult to get too, but you definitely need a car there. We were lucky about lack of snow in a way that the road to the house was clean, when slow comes it might become dangerous at times, as it is relatively steep and narrow, winter tires is a must for snowy season. Overall, a lovely house in a peaceful location, but at the same time only 15 mins away from town with great choice of shops and access to the slopes.
Great character property close to great ski areas.
If you are looking for something different to the typical ski resort box this ticks all the boxes. Easy drive to all the ski areas plus space and character in abundance.
Very rustic with lots of charm.
Very relaxing and far from the madding crowd. Eventually enjoyed the no wifi environment. Gorgeous views. Washing machine would be beneficial
Relaxing mountain hideaway.
If you are looking for a real taste of rural Alp living with everything you need for a relaxing break then Chalet Ecosse Is perfect. Set in a village above Bourg St Maurice with stunning views of the surrounding valley and mountains it is perfectly positioned for anyone wanting to get away from the hustle and bustle of the main town and ski resorts but still be 20 minutes from Les Arc and 40 minutes from several other smaller less busy resorts, our favourite being Sainte Foy, no queues and plenty snow for both skiers and boarders.
Bourg St Maurice has plenty of restaurants and bars for a bit of Après Ski or if you want to buy the local produce and cook back in the chalet, there's a few good supermarkets and specialised shops.
We spent most evenings cooking local produce in the chalet, drinking great wine and relaxing with a book in front of the log burning stove.
The bedrooms were well equipped with comfortable beds and heaters to keep us snug and because the village was so quite we slept in every morning.
I'm glad you enjoyed the tranquillity of Chalet Ecosse and the superb views. A roaring fire and good wine is a winner for most people!
The chalet is located at the edge of the small, peaceful village of Les Echines Dessous, high above the bustling town of Bourg St. Maurice, in the Savoie region of the French Alps. At 1230 meters, this rustic chalet enjoys a beautiful climate, never too hot in summer and plenty of snow in winter.
The chalet overlooks Les Arcs Paradiski ski resort and is also near Val d'Isere, La Rosiere and Sainte Foy. Mont Blanc is within a day's walk or a short drive and in summer, Courmayeur and the Aosta valley in Italy are within easy driving distance.
Skiing, climbing and walking opportunities are too many to list as well as many other sports such as mountain biking, swimming in lakes or outdoor pools, white water rafting and par ascending.
The Vanoise National park is only a few minutes from the house.
A great choice of bars restaurants cafes and shops is available in nearby Bourg St Maurice.
Cheap flights are available to Geneva, Lyon, Grenoble and Chambery airports from various UK airports. All are within 2 to 3 hours' drive from the chalet. From the channel ports the chalet is about an 8 hour drive. Trains serve Bourg St Maurice which is 15 minutes by car or taxi from the chalet.
