About the property

Rose Cottage, Middleton - a cottage that sleeps 4 guests in 2 bedrooms

Rose Cottage is a little gem. If you are looking for a relaxing stay in a picture book cottage with character in abundance, then you'll have to go far to beat Rose Cottage. It is set in the centre of the beautiful village of Middleton-on-Sea in West Sussex. The cottage is Grade II listed and dates back hundreds of years, with the first formal records of it dating from 1606. It was lovingly restored over a 2 year period by previous owners, using traditional building materials and techniques, in conjunction with the English Heritage. Some of this work is visible through viewing panels in the cottage and it won a Conservation Award in 2008. The cottage can also boast a 4-star rating from the English Quality in Tourism scheme. The accommodation consists of a cosy sitting room with a wood-burning stove for the chilly winter evenings and a TV with FreeSat channels. There is a well equipped kitchen, which includes a slim-line dishwasher. The double bedroom is a particular feature, with its exposed beams and its bed with its foot board made up from old stocks! There is a further bedroom with bunk beds and a modern style wet-room with shower, wash basin and toilet. Outside, the cottage is set in beautiful gardens with well stocked flower beds and lawned areas. There is a Bistro set so guests can enjoy afternoon tea 'al fresco', or for just relaxing. There is off-road parking available, with a converted garage as a utility room and secure storage area for sports equipment or a cherished vehicle.

Guestbook comments from the manager

Rose Cottage is every bit as gorgeous as it looks in the photos. A beautiful old cottage with a fabulous cottage garden and plenty of lawn.

We (3 adults, 1 toddler and 1 small dog) fitted comfortably into Rose Cottage. It may be small but it's furnished and equipped to make the most of the space and didn't feel at all cramped. Sunny afternoons were spent in the garden, cosy evenings in the living room. The tv/computer arrangement in the settle is worth a visit all by itself: ingenious! Plus the dishwasher (with tablets), washing machine (with powder), kitchen (with basic essentials). All the details are covered.

The cottage is set just a minute or two's walk from 2 sets of small shops with everything you could want for everyday, plus a lovely gift shop and a couple of takeaways. Ideal home away from home. The playground and park is hardly further: handy when holidaying with toddler and dog. The beach is less than 10 minutes' walk and if you go at low tide you have a massive sandy beach to play on - quiet even on a bank holiday Monday. The other reviewer mentioned the road: yes, the cottage is on the corner of the road into Middleton and Elmer and there is a fairly constant stream of cars but it certainly didn't bother us. It's nice to feel you're in a real place, where people's lives happen, not in some picturesque tourist spot where it is all for show.

Do book Rose Cottage - you won't regret it! Though we may regret recommending it so highly if it means we can't book another week some day.

Cozy and well appointed. Ancient and modern.

This is a lovely place. The rooms are small, but despite this there is no feeling of claustrophobia. A lovely atmosphere. When I booked Rose cottage, I didn't realise the family significance of the place for my friend, so relatives came to visit the place where their great grandfather used to live.

Location

Car: not necessary

Rose Cottage is set in the beautiful West Sussex coastal village of Middleton-on-Sea. The picturesque village centre is a very short walk from the cottage and has local stores, coffee shops and an excellent fish and chip shop, among others. The historic architectural style of the buildings in the village makes it a most attractive place to spend some time. The seafront is a short walk away, accessible on foot via a nearby private estate. The area also benefits from many cycle routes and walks, including the rolling South Downs National Park. A short drive along the coast are the seaside resort towns of Bognor Regis and Littlehampton, both offering a typical English seaside atmosphere with sweet shops, beach front promenades and a pier. The beautiful cathedral city of Chichester lies just to the north west and is famous for its Roman connections, as well as the Festival Theatre which attracts some of the world's top actors. Chichester is dominated by the cathedral and its shopping centre has preserved its heritage and character. The Goodwood Estate lies just to the north of Chichester and, along with its horse racing, is now maybe most famous for the Goodwood Festival of Speed and the Goodwood Revival motor racing events. The location offers easy access to the cities of Brighton and Portsmouth, both along the south coast. These larger cities offer excellent shopping, as well as attractions such as the Historic Dockyard at Portsmouth, home of the British Navy. From Chichester and Bognor Regis there are rail links direct to London.
